Abstract

An apparatus for sealing a puncture through a vessel wall including an elongate tubular body, a balloon carried by the body, an outer tubular member carried over the tubular body, and a sealant carried by the tubular body adjacent the balloon. Retracting the outer tubular member exposes the sealant.

Claims (10)

1. An apparatus for sealing a puncture through a vessel wall, comprising:

an elongate, tubular body, having a proximal end and a distal end;

an inflatable balloon carried by the distal end of the body;

an outer tubular member through which the inflatable balloon is axially advanceable; and

a sealant configured to be carried by the elongate tubular body adjacent the balloon prior to advancement of the elongate tubular body into the outer tubular member;

wherein the outer tubular member is movable between a first position in which the distal end of the outer tubular member is adjacent the balloon and encloses the sealant, and a second position in which the outer tubular member has been proximally retracted to expose the sealant.

2. An apparatus for sealing a puncture through a vessel wall as in claim 1 , further comprising an elongate tamping tube, slidably carried inside of the outer tubular member, for tamping the sealant following retraction of the outer tubular member to expose the sealant.

3. An apparatus for sealing a puncture through a vessel wall as in claim 1 , wherein the sealant comprises hydrogel.

4. An apparatus for sealing a puncture through a vessel wall as in claim 1 , wherein the sealant includes a lumen therethrough for receiving the elongate tubular body.

5. An apparatus for sealing a puncture through a vessel wall as in claim 1 , wherein the elongate tubular body includes a distal end which extends distally of the balloon.
