Abstract

A method of forming a graphitic carbon body employs compression and resistance heating of a stock blend of a carbon material and a binder material. During molding of the body, resistance heating is accompanied by application of mechanical pressure to increase the density and carbonization of the resulting preform body. The preform can then be subjected to a graphitization temperature to form a graphite article.

Claims (9)

1. A graphite article having a porosity of at least about 10% and a permeability of no greater than about 1.0 millidarcys and an electrical resistivity of less than about 7.0 μΩm.

2. The graphite article of claim 1 , having a porosity of at least about 12.5%.

3. The graphite article of claim 1 , having a permeability of less than about 0.75 millidarcys.

4. The graphite article of claim 1 , wherein at least about 60% of the pores of the graphite article are no greater than about 40 microns.

5. The graphite article of claim 4 , wherein at least about 60% of the pores of the graphite article are no greater than about 30 microns.

6. The graphite article of claim 1 having a flexural strength of greater than 3000 psi.

7. The graphite article of claim 6 having a flexural strength of greater than 3500 psi.

8. The graphite article of claim 1 having a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of less than about 2.0×10 −6 /° C. in a with-grain direction.

9. The graphite article of claim 8 having a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of less than about 1.5×10 −6 /°C. in a with-grain direction.
