Abstract

A pump for inducing flow within a vascular system comprises a cannula having a first configuration for deployment within the vascular system and a second configuration for directing the fluid flow within the vascular system, where the second configuration has a greater diameter than the first configuration. An impeller is configured to induce the fluid flow by rotation about an axis. The impeller has a first radius in the first configuration and a second radius in the second configuration, where the second radius is greater than the first radius.

an impeller configured to induce the fluid flow through the cannula by rotation about an axis, the impeller having a blade angle that transitions between generally perpendicular to the axis of rotation and generally parallel to the axis of rotation, the impeller further having a first radius in the first configuration and a second radius in the second configuration, the second radius greater than the first radius.

2. The pump of claim 1 , further comprising a catheter extending to a proximal end of the cannula, wherein the catheter is configured to position the cannula within the vascular system.

3. The pump of claim 2 , further comprising a drive shaft extending coaxially with the catheter and rotationally coupled to the impeller.

4. The pump of claim 3 , wherein the driveshaft is configured to adjust the cannula between the operable position and the deployment configuration by axial motion within the catheter.

5. The pump of claim 3 , wherein the driveshaft is configured to position the impeller between the operable position and the deployment configuration by axial motion within the catheter.

6. The pump of claim 1 , further comprising a balloon for retaining the pump within the vascular system.

7. The pump of claim 1 , wherein the cannula comprises a neck between first and second axial sections, the neck configured for retaining the pump within the vascular system.

8. The pump of claim 7 , wherein the cannula comprises a plurality of openings for perpendicular flow of the fluid into or out of the cannula.

9. The pump of claim 1 , wherein the blade angle of the impeller decreases from an inlet portion of the cannula toward an outlet portion of the cannula.

10. The pump of claim 9 , wherein the blade angle decreases logarithmically between the inlet portion of the cannula and the outlet portion of the cannula.

11. The pump of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of longitudinal frame members are oriented substantially along the impeller axis.

12. The pump of claim 1 , further comprising a circumferential support member extending circumferentially about the cannula in the mid portion.

13. The pump of claim 1 , further comprising a flow straightener disposed within the cannula.

14. The pump of claim 1 , further comprising a mechanical coupling element positioned at a distal tip of the cannula, the mechanical coupling element configured to couple the cannula to a cardiac wall within the vascular system.

15. The pump of claim 1 , wherein one of the proximal and distal sections is rotatable about the axis such that the pump may be transitioned to the first configuration by rotating one of the proximal and distal sections relative to the other section.

16. A device comprising:

a cannula having a collapsed configuration for deployment within a circulatory system and an expanded configuration for directing fluid flow within the circulatory system, the expanded configuration having a diameter greater than the collapsed configuration, the cannula comprising a support member that, when in the second configuration, extends axially and radially in proximal and distal diameter transition portions of the cannula and axially in a mid-portion of the cannula between the diameter transition portions, wherein the frame member comprises a longitudinal pattern in the mid portion or the diameter transition portions and comprises a different pattern comprising a helical or mesh pattern in the other;

an impeller configured to induce the fluid flow through the cannula by rotation about an axis, the impeller comprising a blade having a greater radius in the expanded configuration than in the collapsed configuration and having a blade angle that transitions between generally perpendicular to the axis of rotation and generally parallel to the axis of rotation; and

a catheter extending to a proximal end of the cannula, the catheter configured for positioning the cannula within the circulatory system.

17. The device of claim 16 , wherein the cannula comprises a first end axially fixed with respect to the catheter and a second end axially free with respect to the first end and the catheter.

18. The device of claim 16 , further comprising a drive shaft rotationally coupled to the impeller and coaxially oriented with respect to the catheter, the drive shaft extending along the axis from a first end of the cannula to a second end of the cannula.

19. The device of claim 16 , further comprising a circumferential support member extending circumferentially about the cannula between the proximal and distal sections.

20. The device of claim 16 , wherein one of the proximal and distal sections is rotatable about the axis such that the pump may be transitioned to the first configuration by rotating one of the proximal and distal sections relative to the other section.

21. A method comprising:

inserting a cannula into a vascular system in a deployment configuration, the cannula having an operable configuration with a substantially larger diameter than the deployment configuration, the cannula comprising a support member that, when in the second configuration, extends axially and radially in proximal and distal diameter transition portions of the cannula and axially in a mid-portion of the cannula between the portions, wherein the frame member comprises a longitudinal pattern in the mid portion or the diameter transition portions and comprises a different pattern comprising a helical or mesh pattern in the other;

guiding the cannula to a desired location within the circulatory system;

expanding the cannula to the operational configuration;

expanding an impeller within the cannula, the impeller comprising a blade angle that transitions between generally perpendicular to an axis of rotation and generally parallel to the axis of rotation; and
