Abstract

Methods, systems, and apparatuses are presented for improved satellite communications. The satellite system may comprises at least one gateway, a satellite in orbit configured to communicate with the at least one gateway and provide a plurality of spot beams, and a plurality of subscriber terminals. The spot beams may include a first spot beam to illuminate a first region and a second spot beam to illuminate a second region adjacent to and overlapping with the first region. The first spot beam as sent to at least one subscriber terminal may be affected by (1) interference from other signal sources including the second spot beam at a signal-to-interference ratio C/I and (2) noise at a signal-to-noise ratio C/N. Reception of signals from the first spot beam by the at least one of the first plurality of subscriber terminals may be interference-dominated such that C/I is less than C/N.

Claims (25)

1. A method for selecting a parameter for the design of a communication satellite comprising:

selecting a spot beam pattern comprising a plurality of spot beams directed to a plurality of corresponding regions of the earth, the spot beam pattern resulting in interference between spot beams;

calculating antenna gains as a function of location at locations within one of the plurality of spot beams;

calculating signal qualities as a function of the antenna gain at the locations, wherein the signal qualities include signal to noise and signal to interference ratios;

calculating location-specific data-carrying capacities based on the signal qualities at the locations;

calculating an average capacity from the location-specific data-carrying capacities for the locations; and

selecting at least one parameter of the satellite based at least in part on the average capacity.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein calculating the antenna gains takes into account a reflector characteristic.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the reflector characteristic is reflector size.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the reflector characteristic is reflector shape.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the interference between spot beams includes contributions caused by frequency reuse between a feeder spot beam and a service spot beam.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein calculating location-specific data-carrying capacities is based on Shannon capacity.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein calculating location-specific data-carrying capacities is based on a waveform library that specifies waveforms by modulation type and codepoint.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the waveforms in the waveform library are part of an adaptive coding and modulation scheme.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein calculating the average capacity comprises integrating the location-specific data-carrying capacities over the locations.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the integrating is based on a uniform distribution of the locations.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the integrating is based on a known user distribution of the locations.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one parameter is a number of colors.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one parameter is a beam spacing.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one parameter is a frequency re-use pattern.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein the data-carrying capacities are measured in bps/Hz.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising configuring a satellite using the selected at least one parameter.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising manufacturing a satellite having the selected at least one parameter.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein selecting the at least one parameter maximizes an average outbound capacity over the locations.

19. A satellite designed using the method of claim 1 .
