Abstract

A bed includes bed status indicators, such as a pair of spaced lamp modules that are illuminated to signify a satisfactory status or an unsatisfactory status of the bed.

Claims (33)

1. A patient support apparatus comprising

a frame having a head end and a foot end,

a footboard coupled to the frame adjacent a foot end of the frame, and

a first lamp module and a second lamp module, the first and second lamp modules being coupled to the frame adjacent the foot end, the first lamp module being spaced apart from the second lamp module, at least a portion of the first and second lamp modules being lower in elevation than a bottom edge of the footboard so as to be observable below the footboard, the first and second lamp modules both being operated to emit light of a first color when a set of monitored bed status conditions are all in a satisfactory condition, the first and second lamp modules each being operated to emit light of a second color when at least one of the set of monitored bed status conditions is in an unsatisfactory condition.

2. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first color is green and the second color is amber.

3. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first and second lamp modules each include a first array of light emitting diodes (LED's) that are operable to emit the first color and a second array of LED's that are operable to emit the second color.

4. The patient support apparatus of claim 3 , wherein LED's of the first and second arrays are arranged in a row such that the LED's of the first array alternate with the LED's of the second array.

5. The patient support apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the first and second lamp modules each include a bracket that fastens to the frame.

6. The patient support apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the first and second lamp modules each include a lens that is coupled to the bracket and behind which the first and second arrays of LED's are housed.

7. The patient support apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the first and second brackets each include a shield portion that blocks a portion of the light emitted from the LED's of the first and second arrays.

8. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light emitted from the first and second lamp modules is emitted predominantly downwardly.

The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the set of monitored bed conditions all being in a satisfactory condition comprises 1) a caster brake being set, 2) an upper portion of the frame being at a lowered position relative to a base frame of the frame, and 3) a set of siderails all being in a raised position.

10. The patient support apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the set of monitored bed conditions all being in a satisfactory condition further comprises a patient position monitoring system alert condition not being detected.

The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the set of monitored bed conditions all being in a satisfactory condition comprises 1) a caster brake being set, 2) an upper portion of the frame being at a lowered position relative to a base frame of the frame, and 3) a pair of siderails being in a raised position.

12. The patient support apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the set of monitored bed conditions all being in a satisfactory condition further comprises a patient position monitoring system alert condition not being detected.

13. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the set of monitored bed conditions all being in a satisfactory condition comprises any two or more of the following: 1) a caster brake being set, 2) an upper portion of the frame being at a lowered position relative to a base frame of the frame, 3) a set of siderails all being in a raised position, 4) a patient position monitoring system alert condition not being detected, and 5) an angle of a head section of the frame being above a threshold angle.

14. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first and second lamp modules emit light of the first color substantially simultaneously and emit light of the second color substantially simultaneously.

15. The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first and second lamp modules are located substantially adjacent opposite sides of the frame.

16. A patient support apparatus comprising

a base frame,

an upper frame supported above the based frame, the upper frame having a head end and a foot end, and

a first lamp module and a second lamp module, the first and second lamp modules being coupled to the upper frame adjacent the foot end so as to extend downwardly from a bottom of the upper frame, the first lamp module being spaced apart from the second lamp module, the first and second lamp modules both being operated to emit light of a first color when a set of monitored bed status conditions are all in a satisfactory condition, the first and second lamp modules each being operated to emit light of a second color when at least one of the set of monitored bed status conditions is in an unsatisfactory condition.

17. The patient support apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the light emitted from the first and second lamp modules is emitted predominantly downwardly.

18. The patient support apparatus of claim 16 , further comprising a system for adjusting the height of the upper frame relative to the base frame, the first and second lamp modules moving with the upper frame as its height is adjusted relative to the base frame.

The patient support apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the set of monitored bed conditions all being in a satisfactory condition comprises any two or more of the following: 1) a caster brake being set, 2) an upper portion of the frame being at a lowered position relative to a base frame of the frame, 3) a set of siderails all being in a raised position, 4) a patient position monitoring system alert condition not being detected, and 5) an angle of a head section of the frame being above a threshold angle.

20. The patient support apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the two or more monitored bed conditions are able to be specified by a user.

21. The patient support apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the first and second lamp modules emit light of the first color substantially simultaneously and emit light of the second color substantially simultaneously.

22. The patient support apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the first and second lamp modules are located substantially adjacent opposite sides of the upper frame.

23. A patient support apparatus comprising

a frame having a head end and a foot end, the frame having casters,

a set of siderails coupled to the frame and each siderail of the set of siderails being independently movable between a raised position and a lowered position, and

a first lamp module and a second lamp module, the first and second lamp modules being coupled to the frame adjacent the foot end, the first and second lamp modules being spaced apart and located substantially adjacent opposite sides of the frame, the first and second lamp modules both being operated to emit light of a first color substantially simultaneously when a set of monitored bed status conditions are all in a satisfactory condition, the first and second lamp modules each being operated to emit light of a second color substantially simultaneously when at least one of the set of monitored bed status conditions is in an unsatisfactory condition, the first and second lamp modules having an exposed undersurface and emitting light of the first color and light of the second color substantially downwardly through the exposed undersurface.

The patient support apparatus of claim 23 , wherein the set of monitored bed conditions all being in a satisfactory condition comprises any two or more of the following: 1) a caster brake being set to brake at least one of the casters, 2) an upper portion of the frame being at a lowered position relative to a base frame of the frame, 3) the set of siderails all being in a raised position, 4) a patient position monitoring system alert condition not being detected, and 5) an angle of a head section of the frame being above a threshold angle.
