SECURE ELEMENT
A method for configuring a mobile communication device to perform transactions using a second communication channel that is different from a first communication channel through which the mobile communication device sends voice data. The method includes attaching a secure element to the mobile communication device. The secure element includes a memory storing an application, a processor configured to execute the application stored in the memory; and a wireless transceiver configured to send transaction data associated with the executed application through the second communication channel to a terminal that is remote from the mobile communication device.

21 . A secure element comprising:
memory operable to maintain a payment application;
a processor configured to execute the payment application in response to an initial detection of a near field communication trigger by a point-of-sale terminal, wherein the processor is coupled to the memory; and
a wireless transceiver capable of near field communication, the wireless transceiver configured to send transaction data to the point-of-sale terminal, wherein the secure element is coupled to a mobile communications device, the mobile communications device supporting a first communication channel for cellular data, wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to send transaction data by using a second communication channel different from the first communication channel.
22 . The secure element of claim 21 , wherein the secure element is attached to the mobile communications device as a sticker.
23 . The secure element of claim 21 , wherein the secure element is removably inserted into a slot within the body of the mobile communications device.
24 . The secure element of claim 21 , wherein the secure element is embedded within a body of the mobile communications device.
25 . The secure element of claim 21 , wherein the first communication channel implements a Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication protocol and the second communication channel implements a Near Field Communications (NFC) communication protocol.
26 . The secure element of claim 21 , wherein the first communication channel implements a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) communication protocol and the second communication channel implements a Near Field Communications (NEC) communication protocol.
27 . The secure element of claim 21 , wherein the transaction data includes an identifier that uniquely identifies a user of the mobile communications device.
28 . The secure element of claim 21 , wherein the execution of the payment application is related to ticketing, content, purchase of a service, or management of payment.
29 . The secure element of claim 21 , wherein the payment application allows for processing of a ticket transaction and the transaction data comprises a ticket corresponding to the ticket transaction.
30 . The secure element of claim 21 , wherein the payment application allows for processing of a transaction involving a coupon and the transaction data comprises a coupon corresponding to the transaction.
31 . A near field communication secure element comprising:
a processor configured to execute a payment application in response to an initial detection of a near field communication trigger by a point-of-sale terminal; and
a wireless transceiver capable of near field communication, the wireless transceiver configured to send transaction data to the point-of-sale terminal, wherein the near field communication secure element is coupled to a mobile communications device, the mobile communications device supporting a first communication channel for cellular data, wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to send transaction data by using a second communication channel different from the first communication channel.
32 . The near field communication secure element of claim 31 , wherein the near field communication secure element is attached to a mobile communications device as a sticker.
33 . The near field communication secure element of claim 31 , wherein the near field communication secure element is permanently embedded within the body of the mobile device.
34 . The near field communication secure element of claim 31 , wherein the near field communication secure element is removably inserted into a slot within the body of the mobile communications device.
35 . A secure element comprising:
memory operable to maintain a coupon application;
a processor configured to execute the coupon application in response to an initial detection of a near field communication trigger by a point-of-sale terminal, wherein the processor is coupled to the memory; and
a wireless transceiver capable of near field communication, the wireless transceiver configured to send transaction data including coupons to the point-of-sale terminal, wherein the secure element is physically coupled to a mobile communications device, the mobile communications device supporting a first communication channel for cellular data, wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to send transaction data by using a second communication channel different from the first communication channel.
36 . A secure element comprising:
memory operable to maintain a ticketing application;
a processor configured to execute the ticketing application in response to an initial detection of a near field communication trigger by a point-of-sale terminal, wherein the processor is coupled to the memory; and
a wireless transceiver capable of near field communication, the wireless transceiver configured to send transaction data including one or more tickets to the point-of-sale terminal, wherein the secure element is physically coupled to a mobile communications device, the mobile communications device supporting a first communication channel for cellular data, wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to send transaction data by using a second communication channel different from the first communication channel.
37 . A secure element comprising:
memory operable to maintain an identity application;
a processor configured to execute the identity application in response to an initial detection of a near field communication trigger by a point-of-entry terminal, wherein the processor is coupled to the memory; and
a wireless transceiver capable of near field communication, the wireless transceiver configured to send transaction data including identity credentials to the point-of-entry terminal, wherein the secure element is physically coupled to a mobile communications device, the mobile communications device supporting a first communication channel for cellular data, wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to send transaction data by using a second communication channel different from the first communication channel.
