Abstract

Apparatus, method, and media for enforcing utilization of content. An exemplary method comprises receiving a request to utilize content, the request corresponding to a utilization of the content, determining whether the utilization corresponds to at least one usage right associated with the content, wherein the usage rights include status information relating to the state of the utilization of the content, the status information including a history list comprising information associated with events relating to the content, determining whether the request should be granted based at least in part on whether the utilization corresponds to at least one of the usage rights, and enforcing utilization of the content in accordance with the at least one of the usage rights that is determined to correspond to the utilization based at least in part on a determination that the request should be granted.

Claims (51)

1 . An apparatus for enforcing utilization of content, the apparatus comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memories operatively coupled to at least one of the one or more processors and having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one of the one or more processors, cause at least one of the one or more processors to:

receive a request to utilize content, the request corresponding to a utilization of the content;

determine whether the utilization corresponds to at least one of one or more usage rights associated with the content, wherein the at least one of the one or more usage rights includes status information relating to the state of the utilization of the content, the status information including a history list comprising information associated with one or more events relating to the content;

determine whether the request should be granted based at least in part on whether the utilization corresponds to at least one of the one or more usage rights; and

enforce utilization of the content in accordance with the at least one of the one or more usage rights that is determined to correspond to the utilization based at least in part on a determination that the request should be granted.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the determination of whether the request should be granted is based at least in part on the status information.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the determination of whether the request should be granted is based at least in part on the history list.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more memories has further instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one of the one or more processors, cause at least one of the one or more processors to accomplish one or more transactions with respect to the content.

5 . The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the one or more transactions comprise at least one of a copy, transfer, loan, play, print, backup, restore, delete, directory, folder, extract, embed, edit, execute, authorization, install, and uninstall transaction.

6 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the history list further comprises date information associated with at least one of the one or more events relating to the content.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is implemented as a single computing device.

8 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the utilization is at least one of rendering, distributing, viewing, playing, printing, modifying, and copying.

9 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the content is at least one of an electronic book, music, audio information, a multimedia presentation, a movie, a computer program, and video information.

10 . A computer-implemented method executed by one or more computing devices for enforcing utilization of content, the method comprising:

receiving, by at least one of the one or more computing devices, a request to utilize content, the request corresponding to a utilization of the content;

determining, by at least one of the one or more computing devices, whether the utilization corresponds to at least one of one or more usage rights associated with the content, wherein the at least one of the one or more usage rights includes status information relating to the state of the utilization of the content, the status information including a history list comprising information associated with one or more events relating to the content;

determining, by at least one of the one or more computing devices, whether the request should be granted based at least in part on whether the utilization corresponds to at least one of the one or more usage rights; and

enforcing, by at least one of the one or more computing devices, utilization of the content in accordance with the at least one of the one or more usage rights that is determined to correspond to the utilization based at least in part on a determination that the request should be granted.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the determination of whether the request should be granted is based at least in part on the status information.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the determination of whether the request should be granted is based at least in part on the history list.

13 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising accomplishing one or more transactions with respect to the content.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the one or more transactions comprise at least one of a copy, transfer, loan, play, print, backup, restore, delete, directory, folder, extract, embed, edit, execute, authorization, install, and uninstall transaction.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the history list further comprises date information associated with at least one of the one or more events relating to the content.

16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the method is executed by a single computing device.

17 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the utilization is at least one of rendering, distributing, viewing, playing, printing, modifying, and copying.

18 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the content is at least one of an electronic book, music, audio information, a multimedia presentation, a movie, a computer program, and video information.

19 . At least one non-transitory computer-readable medium storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by one or more computing devices, cause at least one of the one or more computing devices to:

receive a request to utilize content, the request corresponding to a utilization of the content;

determine whether the utilization corresponds to at least one of one or more usage rights associated with the content, wherein the at least one of the one or more usage rights includes status information relating to the state of the utilization of the content, the status information including a history list comprising information associated with one or more events relating to the content;

determine whether the request should be granted based at least in part on whether the utilization corresponds to at least one of the one or more usage rights; and

enforce utilization of the content in accordance with the at least one of the one or more usage rights that is determined to correspond to the utilization based at least in part on a determination that the request should be granted.

20 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the determination of whether the request should be granted is based at least in part on the status information.

21 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the determination of whether the request should be granted is based at least in part on the history list.

22 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , further storing instructions that, when executed by at least one of the one or more computing devices, cause at least one of the one or more computing devices to accomplish one or more transactions with respect to the content.

The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 22 , wherein the one or more transactions comprise at least one of a copy, transfer, loan, play, print, backup, restore, delete, directory, folder, extract, embed, edit, execute, authorization, install, and uninstall transaction.

24 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the history list further comprises date information associated with at least one of the one or more events relating to the content.

25 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the instructions are executed by a single computing device.

26 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the utilization is at least one of rendering, distributing, viewing, playing, printing, modifying, and copying.

27 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the content is at least one of an electronic book, music, audio information, a multimedia presentation, a movie, a computer program, and video information.

28 . An apparatus for enforcing utilization of content, the apparatus comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more memories operatively coupled to at least one of the one or more processors and having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one of the one or more processors, cause at least one of the one or more processors to:

receive a request to utilize content, the request corresponding to a utilization of the content;

determine whether the utilization corresponds to at least one of one or more usage rights associated with the content, wherein the at least one of the one or more usage rights includes status information relating to the state of the utilization of the content, the status information including a history list, wherein the history list comprises information associated with one or more events relating to the content and date information associated with at least one of the one or more events relating to the content;

determine whether the request should be granted based at least in part on whether the utilization corresponds to at least one of the one or more usage rights;

enforce utilization of the content in accordance with the at least one of the one or more usage rights that is determined to correspond to the utilization based at least in part on a determination that the request should be granted; and

accomplish one or more transactions with respect to the content.

29 . The apparatus of claim 28 , wherein the determination of whether the request should be granted is based at least in part on either the status information or the history list.

30 . The apparatus of claim 28 , wherein the one or more transactions comprise at least one of a copy, transfer, loan, play, print, backup, restore, delete, directory, folder, extract, embed, edit, execute, authorization, install, and uninstall transaction.
