enable the transfer of the content from the first computing device to the second computing device in accordance with the transfer right;

update information associated with the transfer right based on the transfer of the content from the first computing device to the second computing device; and

associate a usage right with the content, the usage right corresponding to a utilization of the content.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , the first computing device being server-side and the second computing device being client-side.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , the first computing device comprising at least one of the one or more processors.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , the second computing device comprising at least one of the one or more processors.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , the instructions being stored separate from the content.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , the one or more processor and the one or more memories comprising a single computing device.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , the utilization being at least one of rendering, distributing, viewing, playing, printing, modifying, and copying.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , the content being at least one of an electronic book, music, audio information, a multimedia presentation, a movie, a computer program, and video information.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , the second computing device being part of at least one of a printer system, a video system, and an audio system that utilizes the content.

10. A computer-implemented method executed by one or more computing devices for permitting use of content, the method comprising:

associating, by at least one of the one or more computing devices, a transfer right with content, the transfer right specifying that the content is permitted to be transferred from a first computing device to a second computing device;

transferring, by at least one of the one or more computing devices, the content from the first computing device to the second computing device in accordance with the transfer right, the first computing device including at least a server mode of operation, the server mode of operation being configured for processing a transfer request message received from the second computing device, and the second computing device including both a requester mode of operation and a server mode of operation, the requester mode of operation being configured for sending a transfer request message to the first computing device specifying content and the server mode of operation being configured for processing a request message for utilizing the content in accordance with at least one usage right associated with the content;

updating, by at least one of the one or more computing devices, information associated with the transfer right based on the transfer of the content from the first computing device to the second computing device; and

associating, by at least one of the one or more computing devices, a usage right with the content, the usage right corresponding to a utilization of the content.

11. The method of claim 10 , the first computing device being server-side and the second computing device being client-side.

12. The method of claim 10 , the one or more computing devices being server-side computing devices.

13. The method of claim 10 , the one or more computing devices being client-side computing devices.

14. The method of claim 10 , the method being executed by a single computing device.

15. The method of claim 10 , the utilization being at least one of rendering, distributing, viewing, playing, printing, modifying, and copying.

16. The method of claim 10 , the content being at least one of an electronic book, music, audio information, a multimedia presentation, a movie, a computer program, and video information.

17. The method of claim 10 , the second computing device being associated with at least one of a printer system, a video system, and an audio system that utilizes the content.

18. At least one non-transitory computer-readable medium storing computer-readable instructions that, when executed by one or more computing devices, cause at least one of the one or more computing devices to:

associate a transfer right with content, the transfer right specifying that the content is permitted to be transferred from a first computing device to a second computing device, the first computing device including at least a server mode of operation, the server mode of operation being configured for processing a transfer request message received from the second computing device, and the second computing device including both a requester mode of operation and a server mode of operation, the requester mode of operation being configured for sending a transfer request message to the first computing device specifying content and the server mode of operation being configured for processing a request message for utilizing the content in accordance with the at least one usage right associated with the content;

enable the transfer of the content from the first computing device to the second computing device in accordance with the transfer right;

update information associated with the transfer right based on the transfer of the content from the first computing device to the second computing device; and

associate a usage right with the content, the usage right corresponding to a utilization of the content.
