Abstract

Optical and thermal splines are integrated in the external envelope of a non-planar lamp allowing the optical output of discrete light sources such as LEDs to be distributed for uniform output and the achievement of desired light distributions such as omnidirectional output. Opposing orientation of light sources is utilized to create integrated optical and thermal splines for improved thermal and optical performance.

Claims (20)

1. A light emitting device comprising;

a. light sources oriented in back to back opposing directions;

b. an exterior envelope comprising optical splines and thermal splines;

c. a thermally conductive connection between light source and thermal spline;

d. an optical connection between each light source and optical spline which inputs light within the exterior envelope in an orientation substantially perpendicular to the output surface of the exterior envelope.

2. The light emitting device of claim 1 in which light sources are light emitting diodes.

3. The light emitting device of claim 1 in a light source may be an aggregate of smaller light emitting units.

4. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein opposing light sources are positioned at or near a dividing plane that cross-sections the light emitting device.

5. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein light sources are positioned on opposing sides of a circuit board.

6. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein light sources are positioned on opposing sides an electrically patterned substrate.

7. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein light sources are arranged in a pattern such that each light source is positioned having adjacent light sources oriented in opposing direction.

8. The light emitting device of claim 1 in which a thermally conductive connection between light source and thermal spline is formed along the optical axis of a light source.

9. The light emitting device of claim 1 in which an optical connection optical is aligned with a light source.

10. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein multiple light sources are arranged in a radial pattern with alternating orientation in opposing direction.

11. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein the device is in the shape of a bulb.

12. The light emitting device of claim 11 wherein opposing light sources are positioned at or near the largest diameter cross-section across the bulb shape.

13. The light emitting device of claim 1 in which optical and thermal splines are arranged in alternating sequence.

14. The light emitting device of claim 1 in which alternating patterns of optical and thermal splines are positioned on both sides of a dividing plane.

15. The light emitting device of claim 14 wherein alternating patterns of optical and thermal splines on opposing sides of a dividing plane are offset so optical splines of one opposing side are aligned with thermal splines of the other opposing side.

16. The light emitting device of claim 1 wherein luminous output from two opposing sides is adjusted to create a different light distribution.
