Abstract

Presented herein are systems, methods, and apparatus for encoding video data. In one implementation the method and system classify at least one macroblock of at least one original reference picture and select an encoding technique at least in part based on the classification of the at least one macroblock.

Claims (31)

1. A method for encoding video data, the method comprising:

in a master of a plurality of encoders,

classifying a first picture of the video data as a first picture type;

classifying a second picture of the video data as a second picture type

directing the first picture to a first set of the plurality of encoders based on classification as the first picture type;

selecting an encoding technique for the first picture based on the classification as the first picture type;

directing the second picture to a second set of the plurality of encoders based on classification as the second picture type; and

selecting an encoding technique for the second picture based on the classification as the second picture type.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the selecting of the encoding technique includes selecting between spatial encoding and temporal encoding.

3. The method according to claim 1 further comprising calculating a quantization parameter at least in part based on the classification of at least one macroblock of the first picture.

4. The method according to claim 1 wherein the classification of the first picture is based on content of at least one macroblock of the first picture.

5. The method according to claim 1 further comprising calculating a prediction error.

6. The method according to claim 1 further comprising transforming a prediction error.

7. The method according to claim 1 further comprising quantizing a prediction error.

8. The method according to claim 1 further comprising searching at least one reference picture and comparing the video data to at least one macroblock of the at least one reference picture using a hardware accelerator.

9. The method according to claim 8 further comprising determining the encoding technique at least in part based on results reported from the hardware accelerator.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the master designates certain pictures of the video data as being temporally encoded from temporally earlier reconstructed reference pictures.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the master designates certain pictures of the video data as being temporally encoded from both temporally future and temporally past reference pictures.

12. A system for encoding video data, the system comprising:

a master and a plurality of encoders, the master providing video data to at least one of the plurality of encoders;

the master comprising:

a first engine adapted to classify at least one first macroblock of the video data and direct the at least one first macroblock to a first set of the plurality of encoders based on classification of the at least one first macroblock, the first engine being adapted to classify at least one second macroblock of the video data and direct the at least one second macroblock to a second set of the plurality of encoders based on classification of the at least one second macroblock; and

a second engine adapted to select whether to use spatial encoding or temporal encoding at least in part based on the classification of the at least one first macroblock.

13. The system according to claim 12 wherein the second engine receives a quantization parameter calculated at least in part based on the classification of the at least one first macroblock.

14. The system according to claim 12 wherein the classification is based on content of the at least one first macroblock.

15. The system according to claim 12 wherein the second engine calculates a prediction error.

16. The system according to claim 12 wherein the second engine transforms a prediction error.

17. The system according to claim 12 wherein the second engine quantizes a prediction error.

18. The system according to claim 12 further comprising a hardware accelerator adapted to search at least one reference picture and compare the video data to the at least one first macroblock, wherein the second engine is adapted to determine the encoding technique at least in part based on results reported from the hardware accelerator.

19. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the master designates certain pictures of the video data as being temporally encoded from temporally earlier reconstructed reference pictures.

20. The system according to claim 12 , wherein the master designates certain pictures of the video data as being temporally encoded from both temporally future and temporally past reference pictures.
