Abstract

A subscriber identity module (SIM) tracking system comprises a computer comprising a processor and a memory. An application is stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, creates a data record associated with a subscriber identity module, updates the data record with a second mobile device identification of a second mobile device and a second time, and analyzes the data record to determine a usage statistic. The data record comprises at least a first mobile device identification of a first mobile device and a first time. The usage statistic is used to achieve a business objective selected from at least one of determining a marketing opportunity and offering a service based on associating the subscriber identity module with the second mobile device, and the second mobile device has different functional capabilities than the first mobile device.

Claims (39)

1. A subscriber identity module tracking system, comprising:

a computer comprising a processor and a memory; and

a tracking application stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor:

creates a data record associated with a subscriber identity module, wherein the data record comprises at least a first mobile device identification of a first mobile device and a first time, and wherein the first mobile device is associated with one of a pre-paid service type or a post-paid service type,

tracks and stores items of information associated with the subscriber identity module used in the first mobile device after the first time in the data record,

updates the data record with a second mobile device identification of a second mobile device and a second time based on associating the subscriber identity module with the second mobile device, wherein the second mobile device is associated with the other one of the pre-paid service type or the post-paid service type,

analyzes the items of information associated with the subscriber identity module used in the first mobile device stored in the data record to determine statistics about a usage of the subscriber identity module,

compiles the statistics based on types and frequency of calls made in association with the subscriber identity module and repair and service activity associated with the subscriber identity module, and

using the statistics, provides at least one of a marketing opportunity or a service offering to the second mobile device to achieve a business objective based on associating the subscriber identity module with the second mobile device,

wherein the second mobile device has different functional capabilities than the first mobile device.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the data record further comprises a user identity, whereby the usage statistic is linked to a profile of the user of the first mobile device and the second mobile device to promote determining the service offering.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first mobile device and the second mobile device are one of a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), or a media player.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the business objective further comprises selling the statistics to a third party.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the data record further comprises a manufacturer identity and a model identity.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the statistics are packaged with usage statistics associated with other subscriber identity modules.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the packaged usage statistics are provided to a government agency.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the packaged usage statistics are provided to a consumer product company.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the items of information associated with the subscriber identity module used in the first mobile device comprise at least one of a type of call made, a frequency of calls made, data about communications services used, data about mobile applications used, a geographic location of the subscriber identity module, data about features of the first mobile device associated with the subscriber identity module, data about capabilities of the first mobile device associated with the subscriber identity module, data about support incidents created for the subscriber identity module, or data about any service activity associated with the subscriber identity module.

10. A processor-implemented method for handset service migration, comprising:

creating, by a server, a data record associated with a subscriber identity module, wherein the subscriber identity module is installed into a first mobile device, wherein the data record comprises an identifier of the first mobile device, and wherein the first mobile device is associated with one of a pre-paid service type or a post-paid service type;

tracking and storing items of information associated with the subscriber identity module used in the first mobile device in the data record;

revising, by the server, the data record in response to the subscriber identity module being removed from the first mobile device and installed into a second mobile device, wherein the data record is revised to comprise the identifier of the second mobile device, and wherein the second mobile device is associated with the other one of the pre-paid service type or the post-paid service type;

analyzing, by the server, the items of information associated with the subscriber identity module used in the first mobile device in the data record;

offering a service to a user of the second mobile device based at least in part on analyzing the items of information associated with the subscriber identity module used in the first mobile device stored in the data record; and

compiling, by the server, statistics about a usage of the subscriber identity module based on types and frequency of calls made in association with the subscriber identity module and repair and service activity associated with the subscriber identity module.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the data record further comprises a manufacturer identity and a model identity.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the data record comprises one of a date or timestamp associated with the creation of the data record.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the data record comprises an identity of a user of the first mobile device before the subscriber identity module is installed into the second mobile device, and wherein the data record comprises an identity of a user of the second mobile device after the subscriber identity module is installed into the second mobile device.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

creating, by the server, a second data record associated with a second subscriber identity module, wherein the second subscriber module is installed into a third mobile device, and wherein the second data record comprises an identifier of the third mobile device;

tracking and storing items of information associated with the second subscriber identity module used in the third mobile device in the second data record;

revising, by the server, the second data record in response to the second subscriber module being removed from the third mobile device and installed into a fourth mobile device, wherein the second data record is revised to comprise the identifier of the fourth mobile device;

analyzing, by the server, the items of information associated with the second subscriber identity module used in the third mobile device stored in the second data record; and

offering a service to a user of the fourth mobile device based at least in part on analyzing the items of information associated with the second subscriber identity module used in the third mobile stored in the second-data record.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the statistics are further based on use in a foreign country.

16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising analyzing the statistics about usage of the subscriber identity module and developing marketing strategies based on analyzing the statistics.

17. The method of claim 10 , further comprising analyzing the statistics about usage of the subscriber identity module and generating further revenue based on analyzing the statistics.

18. The method of claim 10 , further comprising packaging the statistics about the usage of the subscriber identity module with statistics about a plurality of other subscriber identity modules.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising providing the packaged statistics to one of consumer product companies, government agencies, or academic researchers.
