Abstract

A cavity back golf club head having a bridge member and a damping element is disclosed. The bridge member extends across a first rear cavity connecting a heel and a toe of the golf club head to control the trajectory of a golf ball. For the longer iron clubs, a damping element extends from the sole portion of the cavity back golf club head to the bridge member to define a second cavity to further influence the trajectory of the golf ball. For the shorter iron clubs, the damping element extends from the top portion of the cavity back golf club head to the bridge member. The damping element may reduce the vibration and sound of the golf club head upon impact with a golf ball.

Claims (43)

1. A cavity back golf club head comprising:

a top portion;

a sole portion;

a heel portion;

a toe portion;

a striking face extending from the top portion to the sole portion, the striking face providing a contact area for engaging a golf ball;

a rear face opposite the striking face forming a rear cavity having a large opening extending towards the rear face;

an asymmetrical bridge member connecting the top and sole portions and extending across the rear face to vary a center of gravity of the golf club head, the bridge member separated apart from an end of the cavity proximate the heel portion and an end of the cavity proximate the toe portion; and

a damping element contacting a rear surface of the striking face and at least partially filling a space between the striking face and the bridge member, the damping element forming first and second rear cavities within the rear cavity,

wherein the bridge member includes a first end and a second end each connected to one of the top portion and the sole portion and opposed first and second edges extending across the rear face between the first and second ends, wherein the first edge is more proximate to the heel portion at the first end than at the second end, and wherein the second edge is more proximate to the heel portion at the first end than at the second end.

2. The cavity back club head of claim 1 , wherein the first end is connected to the top portion.

3. The cavity back club head of claim 1 , wherein the first end is connected to the sole portion.

4. The cavity back club head of claim 1 , wherein the damping element comprises a polymer.

5. The cavity back club head of claim 4 , wherein the polymer comprises a thermoplastic elastomer.

6. The cavity back club head of claim 4 , wherein the polymer comprises a high density polymer resin for varying the center of gravity of the golf club head with respect to the striking face.

7. The cavity back club head of claim 1 , further including a wall extending from the bridge member to an edge of the cavity.

8. A cavity back golf club head comprising:

a top portion;

a sole portion;

a heel portion;

a toe portion;

a striking face extending from the top portion to the sole portion, the striking face providing a contact area for engaging a golf ball;

a rear face opposite the striking face forming a rear cavity having a large opening extending towards the rear face;

an asymmetrical bridge member connecting the top and sole portions and extending across the rear face to vary a center of gravity of the golf club head, the asymmetrical bridge member separated apart from an end of the cavity proximate the heel portion and an end of the cavity proximate the toe portion; and

a damping element contacting a rear surface of the striking face and at least partially filling a space between the striking face and the bridge member,

wherein the bridge member includes a first end and a second end each connected to one of the top portion and the sole portion and opposed first and second edges extending across the rear face between the first and second ends, wherein the first edge is more proximate to the heel portion at the first end than at the second end, and wherein the second edge is more proximate to the heel portion at the first end than at the second end.

9. The cavity back golf club head of claim 8 , wherein the damping element forms first and second rear cavities within the rear cavity.

10. The cavity back club head of claim 8 , wherein the first end is connected to the top portion.

11. The cavity back club head of claim 8 , wherein the first end is connected to the sole portion.

12. The cavity back club head of claim 8 , wherein the damping element comprises a polymer.

13. The cavity back club head of claim 12 , wherein the polymer comprises a thermoplastic elastomer.

14. The cavity back club head of claim 12 , wherein the polymer comprises a high density polymer resin for varying the center of gravity of the golf club head with respect to the striking face.

15. The cavity back club head of claim 8 , further including a wall extending from the bridge member to an edge of the cavity.

16. A cavity back golf club head comprising:

a top portion;

a sole portion;

a heel portion;

a toe portion;

a striking face extending from the top portion to the sole portion, the striking face providing a contact area for engaging a golf ball;

a rear face opposite the striking face forming a rear cavity having a large opening extending towards the rear face;

an asymmetrical bridge member connecting the top and sole portions and extending across the rear face to vary a center of gravity of the golf club head, the asymmetrical bridge member separated apart from an end of the cavity proximate the heel portion and an end of the cavity proximate the toe portion, the asymmetrical bridge member having a first end and a second end each connected to one of the top portion and the sole portion and opposed first and second edges extending across the rear face between the first and second ends, wherein the first edge is more proximate to the heel portion at the first end than at the second end, and wherein the second edge is more proximate to the heel portion at the first end than at the second end; and

a damping element contacting a rear surface of the striking face and at least partially filling a space between the striking face and the bridge member.

17. The cavity back golf club head of claim 16 , wherein the damping element forms first and second rear cavities within the rear cavity.
