Abstract

Systems and methods for blocking inappropriate or undesired media content. Commercials are reviewed and assigned ratings or other attributes. Metadata including one or more flags identifying a commercial's rating or other attribute is embedded or inserted into media guidance application data for the commercial or for the media content during which the commercial is to be displayed. The media guidance application data is then sent to a viewer's equipment. The equipment receives the media guidance application data, parses the data for the metadata, and then determines if the commercial can be displayed based on parental control restrictions set by a user.

Claims (32)

1. A method implemented on control circuitry for instituting content controls to prevent viewing of inappropriate or undesired content by blocking selected commercials during display of media content, the method comprising:

receiving, with the control circuitry, from a server, a media asset and a first commercial to be displayed during the media asset;

determining, using the control circuitry, without user input, a rating of a media asset and a rating of a first commercial, wherein the rating of the first commercial is based on metadata associated with the commercial;

storing, using the control circuitry, the rating of the media asset and the rating of the first commercial;

comparing, using the control circuitry, the stored rating of the first commercial to the stored rating of the media asset, wherein the rating of the first commercial and the rating of the media asset were received from the server without user input; and

preventing, using the control circuitry, display of the first commercial while permitting display of the media asset, if the rating of the first commercial is higher than the rating of the media asset.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising replacing the first commercial with a second commercial, wherein the second commercial has a rating equal to or lower than the rating of the media asset.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising preventing display of both the first commercial and the media asset if the rating of the media asset is higher than a threshold rating permitted by a parental control restriction.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising replacing the first commercial with a blank screen, if the rating of the rating of the first commercial is higher than the rating of the media asset.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the rating of the first commercial based on flags included in the metadata of the first commercial.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the rating of the first commercial based on keywords included in closed captioning data associated with the first commercial.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the rating of the first commercial based on the rating of the media asset.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the rating of the first commercial based on a video component of the first commercial.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the rating of the first commercial based on a sponsor of the first commercial.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining the rating of the first commercial based on an audio component associated with the first commercial.

11. A system for instituting content controls to prevent viewing of inappropriate or undesired content by blocking selected commercials during display of media content, the system comprising:

a memory that stores program instructions; and

control circuitry that executes the program instructions stored in the memory, wherein the program instructions are configured to:

receive, from a server, a media asset and a first commercial to be displayed during the media asset;

determine, without user input, a rating of a media asset and a rating of a first commercial, wherein the rating of the first commercial is based on metadata associated with the commercial;

store the rating of the media asset and the rating of the first commercial;

compare the rating of the first commercial to the rating of the media asset, wherein the rating of the first commercial and the rating of the media asset were received from the server without user input; and

prevent display of the first commercial while permitting display of the media asset, if the rating of the first commercial is higher than the rating of the media asset.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to replace the first commercial with a second commercial, wherein the second commercial has a rating equal to or lower than the rating of the media asset.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to prevent display of both the first commercial and the media asset if the rating of the media asset is higher than a threshold rating permitted by a parental control restriction.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to replace the first commercial with a blank screen, if the rating of the rating of the first commercial is higher than the rating of the media asset.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the rating of the first commercial based on flags included in the metadata of the first commercial.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the rating of the first commercial based on keywords included in closed captioning data associated with the first commercial.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the rating of the first commercial based on the rating of the media asset.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the rating of the first commercial based on a video component of the first commercial.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the rating of the first commercial based on a sponsor of the first commercial.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to determine the rating of the first commercial based on an audio component associated with the first commercial.
