Abstract

Methods and devices for treatment of damaged tissue are disclosed, including treatment of wounds by employing non-electrically powered, reduced pressure therapy devices. Maintenance and control of the sub atmospheric pressure exerted may be provided by such devices while minimizing discomfort to the user. The devices may be configured to be worn inconspicuously underneath clothing.

Claims (31)

1. A patient treatment device, comprising:

a reduced pressure therapy device, comprising:

a housing with vacuum chamber, the vacuum chamber comprising a longitudinal axis and a non-circular cross-sectional shape transverse to the longitudinal axis;

a slidable seal configured to sealably slide within the vacuum chamber along the longitudinal axis, the sliding seal comprising a non-circular cross-sectional transverse to the longitudinal axis;

a substantially constant force spring mechanism contained within the housing and attached to the sliding seal and to the housing;

a sealant layer configured to releasably attach to a skin surface, wherein the sealant layer comprises a hydrocolloid material configured to seal potential fluid leak paths; and

a tube configured to provide fluid communication between the sealant layer and the reduced pressure therapy device.

2. The patient treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the vacuum chamber is configured to be removable from the reduced pressure therapy device.

3. The patient treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the reduced pressure therapy device comprises an attachment mechanism configured to wearably attach the reduced pressure therapy device to a patient.

4. The patient treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the slidable seal comprises a perimeter with a variable longitudinal length.

5. The patient treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the slidable seal comprises at least one curved surface configured to push against a spring surface of the constant force spring mechanism.

6. The patient treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the constant force spring mechanism comprises two constant force spring members.

7. The patient treatment device of claim 6 , wherein the two constant force spring members have different orientations.

8. The patient treatment devices of claim 6 , wherein the two constant force spring members are attached to separate posts of the housing.

9. The patient treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the vacuum chamber further comprises a longitudinal window region configured to view the slidable seal.

10. The patient treatment device of claim 9 , wherein the sliding seal further comprises seal indicia that are not visible through the longitudinal window region.

11. The patient treatment device of claim 10 , wherein the vacuum chamber further comprises an offset window region that is circumferentially offset from the longitudinal viewing region.

12. The patient treatment device of claim 11 , wherein the offset window region is configured to view the seal indicia when the seal is in a proximal position within the vacuum chamber.

13. The patient treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises a posterior opening and the patient treatment device further comprises an actuator configured to releasably attach to the posterior opening of the housing.

14. The patient treatment device of claim 13 , wherein the actuator comprises a releasable latch mechanism.

15. The patient treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the vacuum chamber further comprises a distal opening with a retractable sealing member.

16. The patient treatment device of claim 15 , wherein the reduced pressure therapy device further comprises a connector configured to retract the retractable sealing member to provide fluid communication through the distal opening of the vacuum chamber.

17. The patient treatment device of claim 16 , wherein the connector further comprises a connector seal.

18. The patient treatment device of claim 17 , wherein the connector seal is configured to deform into the connector.

19. The patient treatment device of claim 18 , wherein the connector seal is configured to be deformed by the distal opening of the vacuum chamber.

20. The patient treatment device of claim 18 , wherein the distal opening of the vacuum chamber is located in a distal conduit of the housing.

21. The patient treatment device of claim 20 , wherein the distal conduit of the housing is configured to receive the connector.

22. The patient treatment device of claim 21 , wherein the connector comprises a latch structure configured to releasably attach to the distal conduit of the housing.

23. The patient treatment device of claim 17 , wherein the connector seal is a slit seal.

24. The patient treatment device of claim 15 , wherein the retractable sealing member is in a normally closed configuration.

25. The patient treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the reduced pressure therapy device further comprises a lubricant configured to reduce friction between the slidable seal and the vacuum chamber.
