Abstract

A system, method and various software tools enable a video hosting website to automatically identified unlicensed audio content in video files uploaded by users, and initiate a process by which the user can replace the unlicensed content with licensed audio content. An audio replacement tool is provided that enables the user to permanently mute the original, unlicensed audio content of a video file, or select a licensed audio file from a collection of licensed audio, and insert the selected in place of the original audio.

receiving, at a video hosting website, a video file uploaded to the video hosting website from a client device of a user, the received video file including video content and audio content that were combined before the received video file was uploaded to the video hosting website;

receiving a request from the user to replace the audio content included in the received video file with licensed audio content responsive to receiving the video file;

providing to the user a list of selectable licensed audio files responsive to receiving the request, wherein each selectable licensed audio file is licensed for use on the video hosting website and is selectable to replace the audio content included in the received video file;

receiving, from the user, a selection of a licensed audio file from the list of selectable licensed audio files;

replacing, by a computer, the audio content included in the received video file with the user selected licensed audio file; and

publishing the received video file including the user selected licensed audio file on the video hosting website.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein replacing the audio content comprises:

removing the audio content from the received video file; and

inserting the selected licensed audio file into the received video file.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

displaying a video playback page for the received video file including the user selected licensed audio file;

displaying attribution information for the user selected licensed audio file on the video playback page; and

displaying on the video playback page a link to an e-commerce site from which the selected licensed audio file can be purchased.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the attribution information comprises at least one of a name of an artist associated with the user selected licensed audio file, an album associated with the user selected licensed audio file, and a name of a song associated with the user selected licensed audio file.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

executing an audio replacement tool that displays the list of selectable licensed audio files responsive to the request from the user to add licensed audio content to the uploaded video responsive to receiving the video file.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein executing the audio replacement tool further comprises:

executing the audio replacement tool as a hosted application on the video hosting website.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein executing an audio replacement tool comprises:

executing the audio replacement tool as a client application of a client device of the user.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein the audio replacement tool provides access only to audio content files licensed for use on the video hosting website.

9. The method of claim 5 , wherein the audio replacement tool allows a selection of only a single licensed audio file to replace the audio content in the received video file.

10. The method of claim 5 , wherein the audio replacement tool allows a selection of a plurality of licensed audio files to replace the audio content included in the received video file, and to mix the selected plurality of licensed audio files.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein replacing the audio content comprises:

mixing the selected licensed audio file into the received video file as an overdub of the audio content included in the received video file.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a preview of the selected licensed audio file responsive to receiving the selection of the licensed audio file; and

receiving an instruction from the user to replace the audio content included in the received video file with the selected licensed audio file.

13. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having computer executable code for identifying and replacing audio content in video files uploaded to a video hosting website, the code when executed performs steps comprising:

receiving, at a video hosting website, a video file uploaded to the video hosting website from a client device of a user, the received video file including video content and audio content that were combined before the received video file was uploaded to the video hosting website;

receiving a request from the user to replace the audio content included in the received video file with licensed audio content responsive to receiving the video file;

providing to the user a list of selectable licensed audio files responsive to receiving the request, wherein each selectable licensed audio file is licensed for use on the video hosting website and is selectable to replace the audio content included in the received video file;

receiving, from the user, a selection of a licensed audio file from the list of selectable licensed audio files;

replacing, by a computer, the audio content included in the received video file with the user selected licensed audio file; and

publishing the video file including the user selected licensed audio file on the video hosting website.

14. The computer program product of claim 13 , further comprising:

executing an audio replacement tool that displays the list of selectable licensed audio files responsive to the request from the user to add licensed audio content to the uploaded video responsive to receiving the video file.

15. The computer program product of claim 14 , wherein executing an audio replacement tool comprises:

executing the audio replacement tool as a client application of a client device of the user.

16. The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein the code when executed performs further steps comprising:

providing a preview of the selected licensed audio file responsive to receiving the selection of the licensed audio file; and

receiving an instruction from the user to replace the audio content included in the received video file with the selected licensed audio file.

17. The computer program product of claim 13 , wherein replacing the audio content comprises:

mixing the selected licensed audio file into the received video file as an overdub of the audio content included in the received video file.

18. A computer system for replacing audio content in video files uploaded to a video hosting website, the computer system comprising:

a computer processor;

a computer-readable storage medium comprising executable code, the code when executed by the computer processor performs steps comprising:

receiving, at a video hosting website, a video file uploaded to the video hosting website from a client device of a user, the received video file including video content and audio content that were combined before the received video file was uploaded to the video hosting website;

receiving a request from the user to replace the audio content included in the received video file with licensed audio content responsive to receiving the video file;

providing to the user a list of selectable licensed audio files responsive to receiving the request, wherein each selectable licensed audio file is licensed for use on the video hosting website and is selectable to replace the audio content included in the received video file;

receiving, from the user, a selection of a licensed audio file from the list of selectable licensed audio files;

replacing, by a computer, the audio content included in the received video file with the user selected licensed audio file; and

publishing the received video file including the user selected licensed audio file on the video hosting website.

19. The computer system of claim 18 , wherein the code when executed by the computer processor performs further steps comprising:

executing an audio replacement tool that displays the list of selectable licensed audio files responsive to the request from the user to add licensed audio content to the uploaded video responsive to receiving the video file.

20. The computer system of claim 18 , wherein the code when executed by the computer processor performs further steps comprising:

providing a preview of the selected licensed audio file responsive to receiving the selection of the licensed audio file; and

receiving an instruction from the user to replace the audio content included in the received video file with the selected licensed audio file.
