Abstract

A mobile device for the display of messages includes a message viewer application for displaying segments of the message received from a server. The message can include content that is encoded in a first encoding that is renderable for display on the device, and the same content encoded in a second encoding. On determination that the received portion of the message includes a first part comprising content encoded in a first encoding and is renderable for display, first displayable portion of the message content, the server is signalled to halt forwarding further segments of the message.

Claims (21)

1. A method, comprising:

initiating a condition at a mobile device in which a message is automatically received at the mobile device in sequential segments without the mobile device transmitting a request for a further segment of the message after receipt of a given segment;

receiving at the mobile device at least one segment of the message, the message comprising a first part comprising content encoded in a first encoding and renderable for display at the mobile device followed by a further part comprising said content encoded in a second encoding, said second encoding being selected from a group of encodings comprising HTML and RTF;

determining that an entirety of said first part has been received at the mobile device, said determining comprising determining that one of said at least one segments received at the mobile device comprises a predefined indicator indicating an end of said first part; and

halting receipt of further segments of the message at the mobile device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said first encoding is selected from a group of encodings comprising plaintext and HTML.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one segment of the message is sent to the mobile device by a server, and initiating the condition comprises transmitting a command to the server that segments of the message are to be sent automatically without waiting for a request from the mobile device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein halting said receipt comprises transmitting a command to halt transmission of said further message segments.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein initiating the condition occurs after receipt of one or more segments of the at least one segment of the message, but before determining that the entirety of said first part had been received.

6. A mobile device, comprising:

a transceiver configured for wireless communications;

a memory;

a processor in operable communication with the transceiver and the memory, the processor being configured to:

initiate a condition at the mobile device in which a message is automatically received at the mobile device in sequential segments without the mobile device transmitting a request for a further segment of the message after receipt of a given segment;

receive, using the transceiver, at least one segment of a message, the message comprising a first part comprising content encoded in a first encoding and renderable for display at the mobile device followed by a further part comprising said content encoded in a second encoding, said second encoding being selected from a group of encodings comprising HTML and RTF;

determine that an entirety of said first part has been received by determining that one of said at least one segments received at the mobile device comprises a predefined indicator indicating an end of said first part; and

halting receipt of further segments of the message at the mobile device.

7. The mobile device of claim 6 , wherein said first encoding is selected from a group of encodings comprising plaintext and HTML.

8. The mobile device of claim 6 , wherein the at least one segment of the message is sent to the mobile device by a server, and initiating the condition comprises transmitting, using the transceiver, a command to the server that segments of the message are to be sent automatically without waiting for a request from the mobile device.

9. The mobile device of claim 6 , wherein the processor is configured to halt said receipt by transmitting, using the transceiver, a command to halt transmission of said further message segments.

10. The mobile device of claim 6 , wherein initiating the condition occurs after receipt of one or more segments of the at least one segment of the message, but before determining that the entirety of said first part had been received.
