Abstract

Systems and techniques for transferring electronic data between users of a communications system include a host system structured and arranged to receive and deliver messages of various types between users of the communications system. The host system includes an instant messaging network; a mail gateway; and a configuring network in communication with both the instant messaging network and the mail gateway. The instant messaging network enables instant messaging communication between users of the communications system and has the capability to monitor whether a certain user is capable of receiving an instant message at a particular moment. The mail gateway receives and delivers e-mail messages to users of the communications system. The configuring network is dedicated to automatically configuring instant messaging communication between an intended recipient of an e-mail message and the sender of the e-mail message.

Claims (34)

1. A communications system comprising:

an instant messaging network enabling instant messaging communication between users of the communications system, the instant messaging network having the capability to monitor whether a certain user of the communications system is capable of receiving an instant message;

a messaging gateway for receiving and delivering electronic messages other than instant messages to users of the communications system;

a look-up server that associates electronic messages addresses with instant message addresses of the user of the communication system; and

a configuring network in communication with both the instant messaging network and the messaging gateway, wherein the configuring network configures instant messaging communication using instant message addresses provided by the look-up server between an intended recipient of an electronic message and the sender of the electronic message.

2. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the instant messaging network detects an instant messaging state of the sender of the electronic message.

3. The system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the instant messaging network communicates the instant messaging state of the sender of the electronic message to the intended recipient of the electronic message.

4. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the instant messaging network detects an instant messaging state of the intended recipient of the electronic message.

5. The system as recited in claim 4 , wherein the instant messaging network communicates the instant messaging state of the intended recipient of the electronic message to the sender of the electronic message.

6. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the configuring network sends a redirection command to the intended recipient based on the capability of the sender to receive an instant message.

7. The system as recited in claim 6 , wherein the redirection command comprises a uniform resource locator.

8. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the look-up server:

locates a sender address within an address field of the electronic message; and

identifies an instant messaging subscriber based on the sender address.

9. The system as recited in claim 1 , wherein the electronic messages comprise email messages.

10. A communication system comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

enable instant messaging communication between users of the communications system using instant messaging network;

monitor whether a certain user of the communications system is capable of receiving an instant message sent over the instant messaging network by looking up an instant messaging address from the certain user using an electronic message address of the certain user;

receive and deliver electronic messages other than instant messages to users of the communications system using a messaging gateway; and

configure instant messaging communication between an intended recipient of an electronic message and the sender of the electronic message over a configuring network in communication with both the instant messaging network and the messaging gateway.

11. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to detect an instant messaging state of the sender of the electronic message.

12. The system as recited in claim 11 , wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to communicate the instant messaging state of the sender of the electronic message to the intended recipient of the electronic message.

13. The system as recited in claim 12 , wherein the detected instant messaging state of the sender of the electronic message is active.

14. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to detect an instant messaging state of the intended recipient of the electronic message.

15. The system as recited in claim 14 , wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to communicate the instant messaging state of the intended recipient of the electronic message to the sender of the electronic message.

16. The system as recited in claim 14 , wherein the detected instant messaging state of the recipient of the electronic message is active.

17. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to send a redirection command to the intended recipient based on the capability of the sender to receive an instant message.

18. The system as recited in claim 17 , wherein the redirection command comprises a uniform resource locator.

19. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the computer readable instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:

locate a sender address within an address field of the electronic message; and

identify an instant messaging subscriber based on the sender address.

20. The system as recited in claim 10 , wherein the electronic messages comprise email messages.
