Abstract

Exemplary surface debris removal systems and methods are operable to remove debris from a signal transmitting/receiving surface. An embodiment provides power to, and then removes power from, a conductive memory wire that is secured to a moveable portion of a two-position snap spring. In response to providing the power to the conductive memory wire, a length of the conductive memory wire decreases so that the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring is pulled from an extended position to a retracted position. When power is removed from the conductive memory wire, the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring moves from the retracted position to the extended position. In response to the moving of the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring from the retracted position to the extended position, an energy is generated and transferred to the surface that dislodges the debris from the surface.

Claims (47)

1. A surface debris removal system, comprising:

a signal transmitting/receiving device with a surface having debris thereon;

a conductive memory wire;

a two-position snap spring with a moveable portion configured to be at one of a retracted position and an extended position;

a power source coupled to the conductive memory wire and configured to provide power to the conductive memory wire,

where in response to providing the power to the conductive memory wire, a length of the conductive memory wire decreases,

where in response to decreasing the length of the conductive memory wire, the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring is pulled from the extended position to the retracted position,

where in response to removing the power to the conductive memory wire, the length of the conductive memory wire increases so that the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring is able to move from the retracted position to the extended position,

a mechanical actuator with a lever arm; and

an electronic actuator coupled to the mechanical actuator, wherein actuation of the electronic actuator causes the lever arm of the mechanical actuator to engage the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring, and where in response to engaging the lever arm, the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring moves from the retracted position to the extended position,

where in response to the moving of the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring from the retracted position to the extended position, an energy is generated and transferred to the surface that dislodges the debris from the surface.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

an interface device configured to receive a signal,

where in response to receiving the signal, the power is provided to the conductive memory wire, and is then removed from the conductive memory wire.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a debris sensor configured to detect an accumulation of the debris on the surface,

where in response to detecting the accumulation of the debris on the surface, the power is provided to the conductive memory wire, and is then removed from the conductive memory wire.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a timer configured to generate a periodic signal,

where in response to generating the periodic signal, the power is provided to the conductive memory wire, and is then removed from the conductive memory wire.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the debris sensor comprises:

an optical sensor.

6. The system of claim 3 , wherein the debris sensor comprises:

a weight sensor.

7. The system of claim 3 , wherein the debris sensor comprises:

a sonic sensor.

8. The system of claim 3 , wherein the debris sensor comprises:

a pressure sensor.

9. A surface debris removal system that removes debris from, comprising:

a signal transmitting/receiving device with a surface having debris thereon;

a conductive memory wire;

a mechanical system with a moveable portion configured to be at one of a retracted position and an extended position;

a power source coupled to the conductive memory wire and configured to provide power to the conductive memory wire,

where in response to providing the power to the conductive memory wire, a length of the conductive memory wire decreases,

where in response to decreasing the length of the conductive memory wire, the moveable portion of the mechanical system is pulled from the extended position to the retracted position,

where in response to removing the power to the conductive memory wire, the length of the conductive memory wire increases so that the moveable portion is able to move from the retracted position to the extended position,

a mechanical actuator with a lever arm; and

an electronic actuator coupled to the mechanical actuator, wherein actuation of the electronic actuator causes the lever arm of the mechanical actuator to engage the moveable portion of the mechanical system, and where in response to engaging the lever arm, the moveable portion of the mechanical system moves from the retracted position to the extended position,

where in response to the moving of the moveable portion from the retracted position to the extended position, an energy is generated and transferred to the surface that dislodges the debris from the surface.

10. A system, comprising:

a two-position snap spring with a moveable portion, wherein the moveable portion is configured to be at one of a retracted position and an extended position;

a conductive memory wire with an end attached to the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring,

wherein a power source coupled to the conductive memory wire is configured to provide power to the conductive memory wire,

where in response to providing the power to the conductive memory wire, a length of the conductive memory wire decreases to pull the two-position snap spring from the extended position to the retracted position,

where in response to removing the power to the conductive memory wire, the length of the conductive memory wire increases so that the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring becomes free to move from the retracted position to the extended position;

a mechanical actuator with a lever arm configured to engage the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring;

an electronic actuator coupled to the mechanical actuator, wherein actuation of the electronic actuator causes the lever arm of the mechanical actuator to release the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring from the retracted position to the extended position, where in response to the movement of the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring from the retracted position to the extended position, an energy is generated and transferred from the moveable portion of the two-position snap spring to a surface having debris thereon.
