Abstract

Embodiments relate to valves comprising a member such as a plate or poppet, that is moveable relative to a stationary seat. The state of the member may be maintained against opposing forces with relatively little expenditure of energy. According to one embodiment, a poppet displaced from seating in the valve seat, may be held in position against opposing forces tending to close the valve, until a desired flow of gas through the valve has taken place. The poppet may then be released as desired, such that those opposing forces serve to passively close the valve. The valve may be secured in position utilizing mechanical, magnetic, electromagnetic, pneumatic, electrostatic, or hydraulic approaches. Valve embodiments may be particularly suited to controlling gas flows for compression and/or expansion in an energy storage system.

Claims (33)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a first valve element moveable relative to a port defined by a chamber;

a physical connection to coordinate action between the first valve element and a crank to a piston that is reciprocating within the chamber in an absence of combustion; and

a second valve element selectively moveable relative to the first valve element by an actuator to control a duration of opening of the port by the first valve element, wherein the second valve element is selectively moveable to rotate, the apparatus further comprising a third valve element selectively moveable to control a starting point of opening of the port.

2. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the physical connection comprises a mechanical linkage.

3. An apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the mechanical linkage comprises a rotating shaft.

4. An apparatus as in claim 3 wherein the rotating shaft comprises a crankshaft.

5. An apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the mechanical linkage comprises a gear.

6. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the third valve element is selectively moveable to rotate.

7. An apparatus as in claim 6 wherein the third valve element comprises a shaft.

8. An apparatus as in claim 6 wherein the third valve element comprises a pinion shaft.

9. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a pivot arm configured to interact with the third valve element.

10. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a control system in communication with the actuator to implement active valve control.

11. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein the active valve control is part of a control loop based upon an operating parameter.

12. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the operating parameter comprises a pressure.

13. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the operating parameter comprises a temperature.

14. An apparatus as in claim 13 wherein the temperature comprises a gas temperature.

15. An apparatus as in claim 13 wherein the temperature comprises a liquid temperature.

16. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the operating parameter comprises a shaft speed.

17. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the operating parameter comprises a shaft torque.

18. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the operating parameter comprises a position of the crank.

19. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the operating parameter comprises a position of the piston.

20. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the operating parameter comprises a gas flow rate.

21. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the operating parameter comprises a volume.

22. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein the operating parameter comprises a valve state.

23. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein the control system is configured to implement the active valve control by changing the duration of port openness during intake of compressed gas to be expanded within the chamber.

24. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein the control system is configured to implement the active valve control by changing the duration of port openness during intake of gas to be compressed within the chamber.

25. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein the control system is configured to implement the active valve control by changing the duration of port openness during outlet of gas that has been compressed within the chamber.

26. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein the actuator is configured to receive from the control system, an input signal comprising a voltage.

27. An apparatus as in claim 26 wherein a timing and/or a magnitude of the input signal is determined by the control system.

28. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a spring.

29. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the actuator comprises a motor.

30. An apparatus as in claim 29 wherein the motor comprises a stepper motor.
