Abstract

A method for increasing upstream bandwidth per cable modem user in a cable communications system that includes a cable modem termination system (CMTS) and a plurality of cable modems is provided. The method permits a cable modem to transmit data to the CMTS on multiple upstream channels simultaneously using a technique called “channel bonding.” Channel bonding allows smaller bandwidth upstream channels to be bonded together to create a larger bandwidth pipe.

Claims (35)

1. A cable modem termination system (CMTS), comprising:

an upstream physical layer demodulator;

a downstream physical layer modulator; and

a media access control (MAC) configured to receive an upstream transmission from the upstream physical layer demodulator and to provide a downstream transmission to the downstream physical layer modulator;

wherein the MAC is configured to bond a plurality of upstream channels in a bonded group, to receive a bandwidth request from a cable modern, wherein the bandwidth request is based on a depth of an upstream queue of data packets and includes a request for bandwidth for MAC layer overhead associated with the data packets in the upstream queue, and to issue a multichannel grant that allocates the requested bandwidth across the bonded group for use by the cable modem in transmitting a stream of data packets to the CMTS, and

wherein the downstream physical layer modulator is configured to transmit the multichannel grant to the cable modem.

2. The CMTS of claim 1 , wherein the MAC is further configured to perform real-time load balancing of the plurality of upstream channels to allocate the requested bandwidth across the bonded group.

3. The CMTS of claim 1 , wherein the MAC is further configured to reconstruct the stream of data packets received from the cable modem based on information in the multichannel grant.

4. A method in a cable modem (CM) in a cable network, comprising:

sending a bandwidth request to a cable modem termination system (CMTS), wherein the bandwidth request is based on a depth of an upstream queue of data packets and includes a bandwidth request for media access control (MAC) layer overhead associated with the data packets in the upstream queue;

receiving a grant that allocates the requested bandwidth; and

transmitting a stream of data packets to the CMTS according to the grant.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the sending comprises:

sending the bandwidth request on an available upstream channel.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

re-sending the bandwidth request based on an acknowledgment time associated with the available upstream channel.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the transmitting comprises:

dividing the stream of data packets among a plurality of upstream channels in a bonded group according to information in the grant.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the transmitting comprises:

simultaneously transmitting on the plurality of upstream channels in the bonded group.

9. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

sending an additional bandwidth request to the CMTS after receiving an acknowledgement that the CMTS received the bandwidth request and prior to receiving the grant that allocates the requested bandwidth.

10. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

sending an additional bandwidth request to the CMTS after receiving a grant pending from the CMTS and prior to receiving the grant that allocates the requested bandwidth.

11. A system for communicating with a plurality of devices residing on a wireless network, comprising:

an upstream physical interface comprising one or more upstream demodulators;

a downstream physical interface comprising one or more downstream modulators; and

a media access control (MAC) configured to receive an upstream transmission from the upstream physical interface and to provide a downstream transmission to the downstream physical interface;

wherein the MAC is configured to bond a plurality of upstream channels in a bonded group, to receive a bandwidth request from a device over the wireless network, wherein the bandwidth request is based on a depth of an upstream queue of data packets and includes a request for bandwidth for MAC layer overhead associated with the data packets in the upstream queue; and to issue a multichannel grant that allocates the requested bandwidth across the bonded group for use by the device in transmitting a stream of data packets to the system, and

wherein the downstream physical interface is configured to transmit the multichannel grant to the device.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the MAC is further configured to perform real-time load balancing of the plurality of upstream channels to allocate the requested bandwidth across the bonded group.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the MAC is further configured to reconstruct the stream of data packets received from the device based on information in the multichannel grant.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the MAC is further configured to simultaneously receive data from the device on the plurality of upstream channels in the bonded group.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the MAC is further configured to receive an additional bandwidth request from the device after transmitting an acknowledgement of receiving the bandwidth request from the device and prior to transmitting the grant that allocates the requested bandwidth to the device.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the MAC is further configured to receive an additional bandwidth request from the device after transmitting a grant pending to the device and prior to transmitting the grant that allocates the requested bandwidth.
