Abstract

Skin disorders such as, for example, atopic dermatitis, dyshidrosis, eczema, lichen planus, psoriasis, and vitiligo, are treated by applying high doses of ultraviolet light to diseased regions of a patients skin. The dosage employed exceeds 1 MED, an MED being determined for the particular patient being treated, and may range from about 1 MED to about 20 MED or higher. The ultraviolet light has a wavelength within the range of between about 295 nanometers to about 320 nanometers and preferably is between about 300 nanometers and about 310 nanometers. High doses of ultraviolet light are restricted to diseased tissue areas so as to avoid risk of detrimental side affects in healthy skin, which is more susceptible to damage from UV light. Cooling the skin prior to and/or while exposing the skin to the UV light can be used to minimize tissue damage resulting from exposure to the UV light. Higher doses of UV light can therefore be employed without injurious affects.

Claims (21)

1. An apparatus for determining dosage for treating diseased epidermal tissue with ultraviolet (UV) light, the apparatus comprising:

a repeatable source of high intensity UV light;

a computing device configured to automatically adjust and sequentially increase dosage of high intensity UV light after each application of the high intensity UV light to non-diseased epidermal tissue; and

a switch, modulator or shutter to stop the increase of dosage when a MED dosage level is reached.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a source of the high intensity UV light in the wavelength range of between about 300 and 315 nanometers.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the source of the high intensity UV light comprises an excimer laser.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the source of the high intensity UV light comprises a lamp.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a delivery device having an output configured to deliver said UV light to at least one of said non-diseased epidermal tissue or said diseased epidermal tissue.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a conduit positioned to receive said UV light, said conduit having an output end that emits said UV light.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein said delivery device includes said output end of said conduit.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the conduit comprises a fiber or a fiber bundle.

9. The apparatus of claim 5 , further comprising a conduit positioned to receive said UV light, said conduit having an output end that emits said UV light.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said delivery device includes said output end of said conduit.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein depressing a foot pedal triggers each application of the high intensity UV light.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is configured to automatically and sequentially increase the dosage by at least 50 mJ/cm 2 after each application of the high intensity UV light to non-diseased epidermal tissue.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is configured to automatically and sequentially increase the dosage by at least 100 mJ/cm 2 after each application of the high intensity UV light to non-diseased epidermal tissue.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is configured to automatically and sequentially increase the dosage by at least 150 mJ/cm 2 after each application of the high intensity UV light to non-diseased epidermal tissue.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is configured to automatically and sequentially increase the dosage by at least 200 mJ/cm 2 after each application of the high intensity UV light to non-diseased epidermal tissue.

16. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is configured to automatically and sequentially increase the dosage by 250 mJ/cm 2 after each application of the high intensity UV light to non-diseased epidermal tissue.

17. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is configured to automatically and sequentially increase the dosage by between 50 mJ/cm 2 and 250 mJ/cm 2 after each application of the high intensity UV light to non-diseased epidermal tissue.

18. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the computing device is configured to automatically adjust and sequentially increase dosage of high intensity UV light after each application of the high intensity UV light to nondiseased epidermal tissue by adjusting a number of pulses in each application of the high intensity UV light.
