Abstract

Systems and techniques for transferring one or more files by connecting to a communications system host; sending, to a client connected to the communications system host, a request to transfer one or more files; when a client permits access to the one or more files, establishing a direct socket connection from the client and bypassing the communications system host; and initiating the transfer of the one or more files from the client over the direct socket connection.

Claims (75)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a server, an indication of user preferences set by a user of a communication system, the user preferences comprising:

a list of co-users permitted to receive access to one or more files associated with the user, and

a list of co-users disallowed to send files to the user, the list of co-users disallowed to send files to the user comprising co-users individually identified by the user;

receiving a first request to access one or more files associated with the user of the communications system;

accessing, by the server, the list of co-users permitted to receive access to the one or more files associated with the user;

based on a sender of the first request being on the list of co-users permitted to receive access, allowing access to the one or more files associated with the user over the communications system in response to the first request;

receiving a second request to send at least one file to the user;

accessing, by the server, the list of co-users disallowed to send files to the user; and

based on a sender of the second request being on the list of co-users disallowed to send files to the user, preventing the at least one file from being sent to the user.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the list of co-users permitted to receive access is specified by the user.

3. The method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the list of co-users permitted to receive access comprises co-users of the communications system individually identified by the user.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the communications system comprises an instant message system.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein allowing access to the one or more files associated with the user over the communications system in response to the first request comprises establishing:

a first connection between a host and a first client device associated with the sender of the first request; and

a second connection between the host and a second client device associated with the user.

6. The method as recited in claim 5 , further comprising: transferring the one or more files to the first client device.

7. The method as recited in claim 6 , further comprising: transferring the one or more files to the first client device from the second client device via a direct socket connection that bypasses the host.

8. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein the first and second client devices comprise mobile devices.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein one or more of the first and second client devices comprise a mobile phone.

10. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by a processor, cause a computer system to:

receive an indication of user preferences set by a user of a communication system, the user preferences comprising:

a list of co-users permitted to receive access to one or more files associated with the user, and

a list of co-users disallowed to send files to the user, the list of co-users disallowed to send files to the user comprising co-users individually identified by the user;

receive a first request to access one or more files associated with a the user of the communications system;

access the list of co-users permitted to receive access to the one or more files associated with the user;

based on a sender of the first request being on the accessed list, allow access to the one or more files associated with the user over the communications system in response to the first request;

receive a second request to send at least one file to the user;

access the list of co-users disallowed to send files to the second user; and

based on a sender of the second request being on the list of co-users disallowed to send files to the user, preventing the at least one file from being sent to the user.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 10 , wherein the list of co-users permitted to receive access to the one or more files associated with the user is specified by the user.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 10 , wherein the list of co-users permitted to receive access to the one or more files associated with the user comprises co-users of the communications system individually identified by the user.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 12 , wherein the one or more files are stored on a second client device associated with the user.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 13 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by the processor cause the computer system to transfer the one or more files from the second client device to a first client device associated with the sender of the first request.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium as recited in claim 14 , wherein the second client device comprises a mobile device.

16. A method comprising:

receiving a first request to access one or more files associated with a user of a communications system;

determining, using at least one processor, whether a sender of the first request is permitted to receive access to the one or more files associated with the user;

enabling the sender of the first request to access the one or more files based on the sender of the first request being permitted to receive access to the one or more files;

preventing the sender of the first request from accessing the one or more files based on the sender of the first request not being permitted to receive access to the one or more files;

receiving a second request to send at least one file to the user;

accessing one or more user preferences set by the user comprising a list of one or more co-co-users individually identified by the user that are not permitted to send files to the user;

determining, using at least one processor, that a sender of the second request is not permitted to send files to the user based on the sender of the second request being on the list of one or more co-co-users that are not permitted to send files to the user; and

based on the sender of the second request not being permitted to send files to the user, preventing the at least one file from being sent to the user.

17. The method as recited in claim 16 , further comprising accessing the one or more user preferences set by the user to determine the sender of the first request is permitted to receive access to the one or more files associated with the user.

18. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein the one or more user preferences set by the user comprise a list of co-users of the communications system permitted to access the one or more files.

19. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein the one or more user preferences set by the user comprise a list of co-users of the communications system not permitted to access the one or more files.

20. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein accessing the one or more user preferences set by the user comprises accessing one or more user preferences maintained by a host of the communications system.

21. The method as recited in claim 16 , further comprising:

enabling presentation of a graphical user interface requesting confirmation from the user on whether the sender of the first request is permitted to receive access to the one or more files;

receiving a response from the user via the graphical user interface; and

determining whether the sender of the first request is permitted tc receive access to the one or more files based on the response.

The method as recited in claim 16 , wherein enabling the sender of the first request to access the one or more files based on the sender of the first request being permitted to receive access to the one or more files comprises establishing a connection between a first client device associated with the sender of the first request and a second client device associated with the user.

23. The method as recited in claim 22 , wherein the connection is a direct socket connection that bypasses a host of the communication system.

24. A system comprising:

at least one processor; and

at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions thereon that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

receive a first request to access one or more files associated with a user of a communications system;

determine whether a sender of the first request is permitted to receive access to the one or more files associated with the user;

enable the sender of the first request to access the one or more files based on the sender of the first request being permitted to receive access to the one or more files;

prevent the sender of the first request from accessing the one or more files based on the sender of the first request not being permitted to receive access to the one or more files;

receive a second request to send at least one file to the user;

access one or more user preferences set by the user comprising a list of one or more co-users individually identified by the user that are not permitted to send files to the user;

determine a sender of the second request is not permitted to send files to the user based on the sender of the second request being on the list of one or more co-users that are not permitted to send files to the user; and

based on the sender of the second request not being permitted to send files to the user, prevent the at least one file from being sent to the user.

The system as recited in claim 24 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to access the one or more user preferences set by the user to determine whether the sender of the first request is permitted to receive access to the one or more files associated with the user.

26. The system as recited in claim 25 , wherein the one or more user preferences set by the user comprise a list of co-users of the communications system permitted to access the one or more files.

27. The system as recited in claim 25 , wherein the one or more user preferences set by the user comprise a list of co-users of the communications system not permitted to access the one or more files.

28. The system as recited in claim 25 , wherein accessing the one or more user preferences set by the user comprises accessing one or more user preferences maintained by a host of the communications system.

29. The system as recited in claim 25 , wherein the at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium further comprises instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the system to:

enable presentation of a graphical user interface requesting confirmation from the user on whether the sender of the first request is permitted to receive access to the one or more files;

receive a response from the user via the graphical user interface; and

determine whether the sender of the first request is permitted to receive access to the one or more files based on the response.

30. The system as recited in claim 29 , wherein determining whether the first user is permitted to receive access to the one or more files comprises establishing a connection between a first client device associated with the sender of the first request and a second client device associated with the user.

31. The system as recited in claim 30 , wherein the connection is a direct socket connection that bypasses a host of the communication system.
