Abstract

Exemplary septum assemblies include first and second housing components each defined by at least an inner surface, at least one sealing strip disposed at least partially on at least one of the inner surfaces of the housing components, and a compression member at least partially surrounding the housing components.

Claims (41)

1. A septum assembly, comprising:

a first housing component;

a second housing component;

a first sealing strip disposed on the first housing component;

a second sealing strip disposed on the second housing component and opposite the first sealing strip; and

an elastic compression member disposed around the first and second housing components, wherein the elastic compression member is configured and arranged to urge the first and second housing components together to form a seal between the first sealing strip and the second sealing strip, wherein the first and second sealing strips are configured and arranged to be separated by insertion of a tool between the first and second housing components.

2. The septum assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elastic compression member is configured and arranged to expand when the tool is inserted between the first and second housing components.

3. The septum assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elastic compression member is an elastic band.

4. The septum assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the first and second housing components comprises a tapered portion configured to guide the tool for insertion between the first and second housing components.

5. The septum assembly of claim 1 , wherein the elastic compression member is configured and arranged to permit displacement of one or more portions of the elastic compression member when the tool is inserted between the first and second housing components to allow separation of the first and second sealing strips.

6. A stimulator, comprising:

a main housing;

electrical circuitry disposed in the main housing;

a header assembly coupled to the main housing, the header assembly comprising

a receptacle configured and arranged to receive a proximal portion of a lead,

one or more conductive wires coupled to the receptacle,

a set screw, and

an orifice receiving the set screw and configured and arranged to permit the set screw to fix the lead to the stimulator when the lead is received in the receptacle;

a feedthrough assembly extending from the header assembly to the main housing to electrically couple the one or more conductive wires of the header assembly to the electrical circuitry; and

a septum assembly disposed, at least partially, within the orifice of the header assembly and over the set screw, the septum assembly comprising

a first housing component;

a second housing component separate from the first housing component;

a first sealing strip disposed on the first housing component;

a second sealing strip disposed on the second housing component and opposite the first sealing strip; and

an elastic compression member disposed around the first and second housing components, wherein the elastic compression member is configured and arranged to urge the first and second housing components together to create a seal between the first sealing strip and the second sealing strip, wherein the first and second sealing strips are configured and arranged to be separated by insertion of a tool between the first and second housing components to allow access to the set screw disposed in the orifice of the header assembly.

7. The stimulator of claim 6 , wherein the seal between the first sealing strip and the second seating strip prevents fluid ingress into the orifice beneath the septum assembly.

8. The stimulator of claim 6 , further comprising a power source disposed in the main housing and coupled to the electrical circuitry.

9. The stimulator of claim 6 , wherein the orifice is oriented perpendicular to the receptacle.

10. The stimulator of claim 6 , wherein the orifice is threaded.

11. The stimulator of claim 6 , wherein the orifice and receptacle are configured and arranged to permit the set screw to make contact with the lead when the lead is received within the receptacle.

12. The stimulator of claim 6 , wherein the elastic compression member is configured and arranged to expand when the tool is inserted between the first and second housing components.

13. The stimulator of claim 6 , wherein the elastic compression member is an elastic band.

14. The stimulator of claim 6 , wherein each of the first and second housing components comprises a tapered portion configured to guide the tool for insertion between the first and second housing components.

15. The stimulator of claim 6 , wherein the elastic compression member is configured and arranged to permit displacement of one or more portions of the elastic compression member when the tool is inserted between the first and second housing components to allow separation of the first and second sealing strips.

16. The stimulator of claim 6 , wherein elastic compression member is integrally molded into the stimulator.

17. The stimulator of claim 6 , further comprising a programmable memory unit disposed in the main housing and coupled to the electrical circuitry.

18. A stimulation system, comprising:

the stimulator of claim 6 ; and

a lead coupleable to the stimulator, the lead comprising a plurality of electrodes disposed on along a distal end of the lead.

19. The stimulation system of claim 18 , further comprising a lead extension coupleable to the stimulator and the lead.

20. The stimulation system of claim 18 , wherein the stimulator is an implantable pulse generator.
