Abstract

A protective adhesive film may include a polyurethane sheet and an adhesive layer disposed on at least a portion of a first major surface of the polyurethane sheet. The adhesive layer may comprise a pressure-sensitive adhesive that includes an acrylate polymer and a silicone macromer. The adhesive layer may adhere to a surface of an electronic device without the application of any liquid or additive to the adhesive layer or the surface of the electronic device.

Claims (40)

1. A product for protecting a surface of an electronic device from damage, the product comprising:

a protective film comprising a first major surface and a second major surface opposite the first major surface, the protective film comprising a first tab extending from a first edge of the protective film and a second tab extending from a second edge of the protective film, wherein the first edge is opposite the second edge, the first tab and the second tab being sized to form a grab handle to allow a user to position the first major surface and the second major surface of the protective film during installation of the protective film onto the surface of the electronic device, wherein the protective film comprises a first plurality of perforations between the first edge of the protective film and the first tab, wherein the protective film comprises a second plurality of perforations between the second edge of the protective film and the second tab, the first plurality of perforations allowing removal of the first tab from the protective film after positioning and installation of the protective film onto the surface of the electronic device, and the second plurality of perforations allowing removal of the second tab from the protective film after positioning and installation of the protective film onto the surface of the electronic device;

an adhesive layer disposed on the first major surface of the protective film, wherein the adhesive layer comprises an adhesive that provides tack sufficient to securely adhere the protective film to the surface of the electronic device and to permit repositioning of the protective film during installation of the protective film onto the surface of the electronic device; and

a backing layer covering the adhesive layer to protect the adhesive prior to installation of the protective film onto the surface of the electronic device, the backing layer being removable to expose the adhesive to the surface of the electronic device during installation of the protective film onto the surface of the electronic device.

2. The product of claim 1 , wherein the first tab extends from about the middle of the first edge, and wherein the second tab extends from about the middle of the second edge.

3. The product of claim 1 , further comprising a cap sheet adjacent to the second major surface of the protective film, wherein the cap sheet has dimensions to match a desired surface of the electronic device, and wherein the cap sheet is configured to withstand pressure applied by a mechanical smoothing device during installation of the protective film onto the desired surface of the electronic device.

4. The product of claim 1 , wherein the protective film comprises polyurethane.

5. The product of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer comprises an acrylate polymer and a silicon monomer.

6. The product of claim 1 , wherein the protective film is air permeable.

7. The product of claim 1 , wherein the protective film is between about 150 microns and about 400 microns in thickness.

8. The product of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer is between about 12 microns and about 150 microns in thickness.

9. The product of claim 1 , wherein the protective film comprises a polycaprolactone based aliphatic thermoplastic urethane.

10. The product of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer comprises a copolymer of an acrylate polymer and a silicone macromer side chain.

11. The product of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the second major surface of the protective film comprises a micro-matte surface finish.

12. The product of claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of a surface of the cap sheet that is adjacent to the second major surface of the protective film comprises a micro-matte surface finish.

13. The product of claim 3 , wherein the cap sheet comprises polyester.

14. The product of claim 13 , wherein the cap sheet is between about 24 microns and about 254 microns in thickness.

15. The product of claim 1 , wherein the adhesive layer is configured to adhere to the surface of the electronic device without application of any liquid to the adhesive layer or the surface of the electronic device.

16. The product of claim 1 , further comprising an opening in the protective film configured to provide access to a component of the electronic device.

17. A product for protecting a surface of an electronic device, the product comprising:

a protective film comprising a first major surface, a second major surface opposite the first major surface, a first edge, and a second edge opposite the first edge;

a first tab extending in a first direction from the first edge of the protective film, and a second tab extending in a second direction opposite the first direction from the second edge of the protective film, the first tab and the second tab being sized to form a grab handle for positioning of the protective film relative to the surface of the electronic device during installation of the protective film over the surface of the electronic device;

a first plurality of perforations between the first edge of the protective film and the first tab, and a second plurality of perforations between the second edge of the protective film and the second tab, the first plurality of perforations allowing removal of the first tab after the positioning and installation of the protective film over the surface of the electronic device, and the second plurality of perforations allowing removal of the second tab after the positioning and installation of the protective film over the surface of the electronic device;

an adhesive layer disposed on the first major surface of the protective film, the adhesive layer comprising an adhesive that provide tack sufficient to adhere the first major surface of the protective film to the surface of the electronic device and to permit repositioning of the protective film during the installation of the protective film over the surface of the electronic device; and

a backing layer covering the adhesive layer to protect the adhesive prior to the installation of the protective film over the surface of the electronic device, the backing layer being removable from the adhesive layer prior to the installation to expose the adhesive on the first major surface of the protective film to the surface of the electronic device.

18. The product of claim 17 , wherein the first tab extends from about the middle of the first edge, and wherein the second tab extends from about the middle of the second edge.

19. The product of claim 17 , further comprising a cap sheet adjacent to the second major surface of the protective film, the cap sheet being sized according to the surface of the electronic device, the cap sheet withstanding a pressure applied by a mechanical smoothing device during installation of the protective film onto the surface of the electronic device.
