Abstract

A method for configuring a mobile communication device to perform transactions using a second communication channel that is different from a first communication channel through which the mobile communication device sends voice data. The method includes attaching a secure element to the mobile communication device. The secure element includes a memory storing an application, a processor configured to execute the application stored in the memory; and a wireless transceiver configured to send transaction data associated with the executed application through the second communication channel to a terminal that is remote from the mobile communication device.

Claims (32)

1 . A method comprising:

maintaining a near field communication (NFC) application and transaction data in a secure element memory included in a secure element;

executing the NFC application by using a secure element processor in response to an NFC induction based trigger from an NFC terminal;

transmitting transaction data by using a secure element NFC transceiver, wherein the transaction data is transmitted upon execution of the NFC application and further wherein the secure element is coupled to a mobile device comprising a mobile device memory, a mobile device processor, and a mobile device transceiver;

wherein a response signal is received at the mobile device from a remote server, wherein the response signal is sent by the remote server by using short messaging service (SMS).

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the mobile device but electrically decoupled from electrical interior components of the mobile device.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the mobile device and electrically coupled to electrical interior components of the mobile device.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is included within the body of a memory card configured for placement in a memory card slot in the mobile device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the secure element is embedded within the body of the mobile communication device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application is executable to permit a user to perform a ticketing transaction.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application is executable to permit a user to perform an Internet commerce transaction.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the payment application is executable to permit a user to perform a ticket transaction.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application is executable to permit a user to perform a transaction involving storage of a digital artifact, provide payment information, or provide banking information.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is configured to use a first communication channel.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the NFC terminal is a point-of-sale (POS) terminal connected to a remote server.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the NFC terminal is a point-of-entry (POE) terminal connected to a remote server.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the NFC terminal is a mobile device coupled with a secure element and further wherein the secure element is configured for near field communications.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the NFC terminal is a mobile device coupled with a secure element and further wherein the secure element is configured for near field communications.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the NFC terminal is a secure element and further wherein the secure element includes a chip configured for unidirectional near field communication.

16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the response signal comprises amount, date, merchant, and account balance information.

17 . A system comprising:

a secure element memory configured to maintain a near field communication (NFC) application and transaction data;

a secure element processor configured to execute the NFC application in response to an NFC induction based trigger from an NFC terminal;

a secure element NFC transceiver configured to transmit transaction data, wherein the transaction data is transmitted upon execution of the NFC application and further wherein the secure element is coupled to a mobile device comprising a mobile device memory, a mobile device processor, and a mobile device transceiver; and

wherein a response signal at the mobile device is received from a remote server at the mobile device, wherein the response signal is sent by the remote server by using short messaging service (SMS).

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the mobile device but electrically decoupled from electrical interior components of the mobile device.

19 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the secure element is physically coupled to the mobile device and electrically coupled to electrical interior components of the mobile device.

20 . An apparatus comprising:

means for maintaining a near field communication (NFC) application and transaction data in a secure element memory included in a secure element;

means for executing the NFC application by using a secure element processor in response to an NFC induction based trigger from an NFC terminal;

means for transmitting transaction data by using a secure element NFC transceiver, wherein the transaction data is transmitted upon execution of the NFC application and further wherein the secure element is coupled to a mobile device comprising a mobile device memory, a mobile device processor, and a mobile device transceiver;

wherein a response signal is received at the mobile device from a remote server, wherein the response signal is sent by the remote server by using short messaging service (SMS).
