Joint arthroplasty devices and surgical tools
View Patent ↗Disclosed herein are methods, compositions and tools for repairing articular surfaces repair materials and for repairing an articular surface. The articular surface repairs are customizable or highly selectable by patient and geared toward providing optimal fit and function. The surgical tools are designed to be customizable or highly selectable by patient to increase the speed, accuracy and simplicity of performing total or partial arthroplasty.
1. A patient-specific instrument system for surgery of a joint of a patient, the system comprising:
a patient-specific surface for engaging a substantially uncut joint surface, the surface conforming to and being substantially a negative of the uncut joint surface;
a guide for directing a surgical instrument; and
an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the guide;
wherein the guide has a range of rotational orientations relative to the joint and is adjustable within the range of rotational orientations by the adjustment mechanism to provide a selected rotational position of the guide;
wherein the guide defines a cutting or drilling path through at least a portion of the joint having a position based on at least one predetermined orientation within the range.
2. The instrument system of claim 1 , further comprising a rotational alignment guide.
3. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism provides a range of predetermined rotational orientations relative to the patient-specific surface.
4. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism provides a predetermined rotational orientation relative to the patient-specific surface.
5. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism comprises a set of rotationally arranged slots and pins configured to move slidably within the set of rotationally arranged slots.
6. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism comprises a set of slots and pins configured to move slidably within the set of slots.
7. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism includes a ratchet like mechanism.
8. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the range of rotational orientations provide a selectable internal rotation angle of an orthopedic implant.
9. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the range of rotational orientations provide a selectable external rotation angle of an orthopedic implant.
10. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the range of rotational orientations provide a selectable internal and external rotation angle of an orthopedic implant.
11. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the range of rotational orientations includes a predetermined internal rotation angle of an orthopedic implant.
12. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the range of rotational orientations includes a predetermined external rotation angle of an orthopedic implant.
13. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the range of rotational orientations includes a predetermined internal and external rotation angle of an orthopedic implant.
14. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the patient-specific surface and the guide are included in an integrally formed body.
15. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the system includes two or more drill guides.
16. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the system includes two or more drill guides and at least one cut guide.
17. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism provides a range of rotational positions relative to the patient-specific surface.
18. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism provides a range of rotational positions relative to a desired implant rotation.
19. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism comprises a set of spacers.
20. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism comprises a set of pegs to engage and secure the guide.
21. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the adjustment mechanism comprises a set of protrusions to engage and secure the guide.
22. The instrument system of claim 21 , wherein the set of protrusions and the guide include separate components.
23. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein the system has a plurality of guides therein.
24. The instrument system of claim 1 , wherein a first guide is configured for drilling and a second guide is configured for cutting.
25. A patient-specific instrument system for surgery of a joint of a patient, the system comprising:
a patient-specific surface for engaging a substantially uncut joint surface, the surface conforming to and being substantially a negative of the uncut joint surface; and
a guide for directing a surgical instrument, wherein the guide has a range of positions relative to the patient-specific surface and is adjustable within a range of rotational orientations relative to the patient-specific surface;
wherein the guide defines a cutting path through at least a portion of the joint.
26. A patient-specific instrument system for surgery of a joint of a patient, the system comprising:
a patient-specific surface for engaging a substantially uncut joint surface, the surface conforming to and being substantially a negative of the uncut joint surface;
a guide for directing a surgical instrument; and
an adjustment mechanism for adjusting the guide;
wherein the guide has a range of orientations relative to an alignment position of the joint and is adjustable within the range of orientations by the adjustment mechanism;
wherein the guide defines a cutting or drilling path through at least a portion of the joint having a position based on at least one orientation within the range.
27. A patient-specific instrument system for surgery of a joint of a patient, the system comprising:
a patient-specific surface for engaging a substantially uncut joint surface, the surface conforming to and being substantially a negative of the uncut joint surface; and
a guide for directing a surgical instrument, wherein the guide has a range of positions relative to the patient-specific surface and is adjustable within a range of orientations from at least one of an anatomical axis and a biomechanical axis associated with said joint;
wherein the guide defines a cutting or drilling path through at least a portion of the joint having a position based on at least one orientation within the range.
28. The instrument system of claim 27 , wherein the patient-specific surface and the guide are included in an integrally formed body.
29. The instrument system of claim 27 , wherein the patient-specific surface is included in a first body having a linkage mechanism and the guide is included in a second body having a complimentary linkage mechanism for connecting the first and second bodies.
30. The instrument system of claim 29 , wherein the linkage mechanism is a drill hole created by a first drill inserted into a drill guide attached to the first body.
