Abstract

An apparatus and method for using an anastomosis device to repair severed tissues resulting from a surgical medical procedure such as a radical prostatectomy, ilio-orthotopic neobladder construction, cystoprostatectomy, cystectomy, urethral anastomosis, or ureteral anastomosis.

Claims (26)

1. An anastomosis device for performing a variety of anastomosis procedures, comprising:

an elongate body having a central lumen extending between a distal end and a proximal end, the distal end including a drainage aperture fluidly connected to the central lumen, the elongate body including a proximal inflation balloon and a medial inflation balloon, wherein each balloon is individually connected to an inflation lumen within the elongate body, the elongate body further including a distalmost pair of extendible tines positioned between the medial inflation balloon and the distal end.

2. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , further comprising a proximalmost pair of retention members positioned between the medial inflation balloon and the proximal inflation balloon.

3. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein the distalmost pair of extendible tines comprises a first set of tine members and a second set of tine members, wherein the first and second sets of tine members are independently deployable.

4. The anastomosis device of claim 3 , further comprising a proximalmost pair of retention members positioned between the medial inflation balloon and the proximal inflation balloon, wherein the proximalmost pair of retention members comprises a third set of tine members and a fourth set of tine members, wherein the third and fourth sets of tine members are independently deployable.

5. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , further comprising a distal inflation balloon positioned between the distalmost pair of extendible tines and the distal end.

6. The anastomosis device of claim 1 , wherein the anastomosis procedure comprises a radical prostatectomy procedure, a urethral anastomosis procedure, a cystectomy procedure, a cystoprostatectomy procedure or an ilio-orthotopic neobladder procedure.

7. An anastomosis device for performing a variety of anastomosis procedures comprising:

an elongate body having a distal end, a drainage aperture positioned proximate the distal end, a distal inflation balloon and a medial inflation balloon, wherein a distalmost pair of tines including a first tine set and a second tine set is positioned such that the first and second tine sets are located between the medial inflation balloon and the drainage aperture and wherein the distal inflation balloon is positioned between the distalmost pair of tines and the drainage aperture.

8. The anastomosis device of claim 7 , wherein the first and second tine sets are independently deployable from within the elongate body.

9. The anastomosis device of claim 7 , wherein a proximalmost pair of tines including a third tine set and a fourth tine set is positioned such that the third and fourth tine sets are located between the medial inflation balloon and a proximal inflation balloon.

10. The anastomosis device of claim 9 , wherein the first, second, third and fourth tine sets are independently deployable from within the elongate body.

11. A radical prostatectomy procedure comprising the step of:

inserting the anastomosis device of claim 10 into a patient's body.

12. A urethral anastomosis procedure comprising the step of:

inserting the anastomosis device of claim 10 into a patient's body.

13. A cystectomy procedure comprising the step of:

inserting the anastomosis device of claim 10 into a patient's body.

14. A cystoprostatectomy procedure comprising the step of:

inserting the anastomosis device of claim 10 into a patient's body.

15. An ilio-orthotopic neobladder procedure comprising the step of:

inserting the anastomosis device of claim 10 into a patient's body.

16. An anastomosis device for performing a variety of anastomosis procedures, comprising:

an elongate body having a central lumen extending between a distal end and a proximal end, the distal end including a drainage aperture connected to the central lumen, the elongate body including a proximal inflation balloon and a medial inflation balloon, wherein each balloon is individually connected to an inflation lumen within the elongate body, the elongate body further including a distalmost pair of retention members positioned between the medial inflation balloon and the distal end, the distalmost pair of retention members having a first set of tine members and a second set of tine members, wherein the first and second sets of tine members are independently deployable.

17. The anastomosis device of claim 16 , further comprising a proximalmost pair of retention members positioned between the medial inflation balloon and the proximal inflation balloon.

18. The anastomosis device of claim 17 , wherein the proximalmost pair of retention members comprises a third set of tine members and a fourth set of tine members, wherein the third and fourth sets of tine members are independently deployable.
