Abstract

An image decoder includes a base layer to decode at least a portion of an encoded video stream into a first image having a first image format. The image decoder can generate a color space prediction by scaling a color space of the first image from the first image format into a color space corresponding to a second image format. The image decoder includes an enhancement layer to decode the encoded video stream to generate a second image in the second image format based, at least in part, on the color space prediction.

Claims (29)

1 . An apparatus comprising:

an image decoder including a base layer to decode at least a portion of an encoded video stream into a first image having a first image format, wherein the image decoder is configured to generate a color space prediction by scaling a color space of the first image from the first image format into a color space corresponding to a second image format, and includes an enhancement layer to decode the encoded video stream to generate a second image in the second image format based, at least in part, on the color space prediction.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first image format corresponds to a BT.709 video standard and the second image format corresponds to an Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) video standard.

3 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the image decoder is configured to generate the color space prediction by independently scaling each channel of the color spaces.

4 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the image decoder is configured to generate the color space prediction by mixing a luminance channel with a chrominance channel of the first image to generate at least a luminance channel or chrominance channel of the color space prediction.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the image decoder is configured to scale the color space of the first image corresponding to the first image format into the color space corresponding to the second image format based, at least in part, on color prediction parameters utilized to encode the encoded video stream.

6 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the image decoder is configured to select a type of color space scaling to perform in response to the color prediction parameters, and scale the color space of the first image based on the selected type of color space scaling.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the image decoder is configured to scale a resolution of the first image from the first image format into a resolution corresponding to the second image format, and to generate the color space prediction based, at least in part, on the scaled resolution of the first image.

8 . A method comprising:

decoding, by a video decoder, at least a portion of an encoded video stream to generate a first image having a first image format;

scaling, by the video decoder, a color space of the first image corresponding to the first image format into a color space corresponding to a second image format;

generating, by the video decoder, a color space prediction based, at least in part, on the scaled color space of the first image; and

decoding, by the video decoder, the encoded video stream into a second image having the second image format based, at least in part, on the color space prediction.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the first image format corresponds to a BT.709 video standard and the second image format corresponds to an Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) video standard.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein scaling the color space of the first image further comprises independently scaling, by the video decoder, each channel of the color spaces.

11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein scaling the color space of the first image further comprises mixing, by the video decoder, a luminance channel with a chrominance channel of the first image to generate at least a luminance channel or chrominance channel of the color space prediction.

12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein scaling the color space of the first image corresponding to the first image format into the color space corresponding to the second image format is based, at least in part, on color prediction parameters utilized to encode the encoded video stream.

13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising selecting, by the video decoder, a type of color space scaling to perform in response to the color prediction parameters, wherein scaling the color space of the first image based on the selected type of color space scaling.

14 . The method of claim 11 further comprising scaling, by the video decoder, a resolution of the first image from the first image format into a resolution corresponding to the second image format, and wherein generating the color space prediction is based, at least in part, on the scaled resolution of the first image.

15 . An apparatus comprising:

encoding, by a video encoder, a first image having a first image format;

scaling, by the video encoder, a color space of the encoded first image from the first image format into a color space corresponding to a second image format;

generating, by the video encoder, a color space prediction based, at least in part, on the scaled color space of the encoded first image; and

encoding, by the video encoder, a second image having the second image format based, at least in part, on the color space prediction.

16 . The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the first image format corresponds to a BT.709 video standard and the second image format corresponds to an Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) video standard.

17 . The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein scaling the color space of the encoded first image further comprises independently scaling, by the video encoder, each channel of the color space corresponding to the encoded first image.

18 . The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein scaling the color space of the encoded first image further comprises mixing, by the video encoder, a luminance channel with a chrominance channel of the encoded first image to generate at least a luminance channel or chrominance channel of the color space prediction.

19 . The apparatus of claim 15 further comprising transmitting, by the video encoder, the encoded second image and color prediction parameters utilized to scale the color space of the first image to a video decoder.

20 . The apparatus of claim 15 , further comprising scaling, by the video encoder, a resolution of the encoded first image from the first image format into a resolution corresponding to the second image format, and wherein generating the color space prediction is based, at least in part, on the scaled resolution of the encoded first image.
