Abstract

The invention provides methods for forming ultra-thin hydrophilic polymeric coatings on articles, as well as articles formed therefrom. The coatings are formed by irradiating a composition including a polymer having pendent photoreactive groups while the composition is in contact with a surface of the article.

Claims (15)

1. An implantable medical device having a hydrophilic polymeric coating having a thickness of 20 nm or less, the coating comprising a plurality of hydrophilic polymers covalently bonded via pendent photo-reactive groups; wherein the pendent photo-reactive groups have been reacted to form the hydrophilic polymeric coating; and wherein the coating is formed by a process comprising contacting an implantable medical device with a liquid coating composition comprising a hydrophilic polymer comprising at least one pendent latent photoreactive group, wherein the photoreactive group comprises an aryl ketone selected from the group consisting of acetophenone, benzophenone, anthraquinone, anthrone, anthrone-like heterocycles, and substituted derivatives thereof, and while the coating composition is in contact with the device, irradiating the composition to activate the pendent latent photoreactive groups to form the hydrophilic polymeric coating.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the photoreactive group is attached to the hydrophilic polymer via an amide bond.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer comprises aminoalkyl(meth)acrylamide and the photoreactive group is attached to the polymer via the aminoalkyl(meth)acrylamide.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the hydrophilic polymer comprises from a photoreactive group-monomer in an amount in a range from 0.1% to about 10%, and a hydrophilic monomer, or combination of hydrophilic monomers, in an amount in a range from 90% to about 99.9%, as based on a molar percentage.

An implantable medical device having a hydrophilic polymeric coating having a thickness of 20 nm or less, the coating comprising hydrophilic polymers having pendent aryl ketone photoreacted groups selected from the group consisting of acetophenone, benzophenone, anthraquinone, anthrone, anthrone-like heterocycles, and substituted derivatives thereof, the hydrophilic polymers being covalently bonded via the pendent aryl ketone photoreacted groups.

6. The device of claim 5 wherein the hydrophilic polymeric coating has a thickness of 5 nm or less.

7. The device of claim 5 wherein the photoreacted groups have an activation wavelength in the range of 200 nm to 400 nm.

8. The device of claim 5 wherein the hydrophilic polymer has a molecular weight of 500 kDa or less.

9. The device of claim 8 wherein the hydrophilic polymer has a molecular weight in the range of 10 kDa to 500 kDa.

10. The device of claim 5 wherein the photoreacted group is attached to the hydrophilic polymer via an amide bond.

11. The device of claim 10 wherein the amide bond is formed from an N-(3 aminopropyl) moiety of a hydrophilic polymer.

12. The device of claim 5 wherein the hydrophilic polymer comprises aminoalkyl(meth)acrylamide and the photoreacted group is attached to the polymer via the aminoalkyl(meth)acrylamide.

13. The device of claim 5 wherein the hydrophilic polymer comprises N-[3-(7-methyl-9-oxothioxanthene-3-carboxamido) propyl]methacrylamide (MTA-APMA) copolymerized with acrylamide or vinyl pyrrolidone.

14. The device of claim 5 wherein the implantable medical device comprises a catheter.

The device of claim 14 wherein the catheter is selected from the group consisting of urinary catheters, intravenous catheters, artificial lung catheters, blood pressure and stent graft catheters, vascular access catheters, atherectomy catheters, clot extraction catheters, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty catheters (PTCA catheters), drug infusion catheters, angiographic catheters, hemodialysis catheters, neurovascular balloon catheters, thoracic cavity suction drainage catheters, electrophysiology catheters, stroke therapy catheters, abscess drainage catheters, dialysis catheters, central venous access catheters, and parental feeding catheters.
