Abstract

A non-woven industrial absorbent with at least one dual-layer outer scrim. The absorbent includes a core made of cellulose material and bicomponent fibers and has first and second surfaces. A scrim is bonded to at least one of the surfaces. The scrim includes a first layer, the function of which is to adhere to the core, and a second layer, whose function is to provide enhanced grip. The product may be made by processing cellulose to a suitable size, optionally applying a liquid fire-retardant to the cellulose, drying and mixing the cellulose with a thermoplastic bonding agent, and depositing the material onto a belt to produce a web. Subsequent processing of the web softens or melts the bonding agent, thereby adhering it to other web material and giving the web strength and integrity. The one or more scrims or an optional netting provide additional strength or particular surface characteristics.

Claims (20)

1 . A non-woven product for use as an industrial absorbent, the product comprising:

a non-woven web core, the core having a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, and including a mixture of

at least one of scrap and recycled cellulose, the cellulose being selected from at least one of a group of sources including a source of post-industrial cellulose and a source of post-consumer cellulose, and

bicomponent fibers, at least some of the bicomponent fibers being thermally bonded to at least some of the cellulose;

an air-permeable scrim having a first layer including spunbond material and a second layer including meltblown material, the first layer of the scrim thermally bonded to one of the group consisting of the first surface of the core and the second surface of the core.

2 . The non-woven product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the cellulose is treated with a liquid fire-retardant, and then dried prior to web formation.

3 . The non-woven product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first layer of the scrim is formed from bicomponent fibers and the second layer is formed from polypropylene.

4 . The non-woven product of claim 1 , wherein the first layer of the scrim has a coefficient of friction and the second layer has a coefficient of friction that is greater than the coefficient of friction of the first layer.

5 . The non-woven product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the second layer is embossed.

6 . The non-woven product as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first layer of the scrim is bonded to the core and to the second layer of the scrim.

7 . A non-woven product for use as an industrial absorbent, the product comprising:

a non-woven web core, the core having a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, and including a mixture of

cellulose, and

a thermoplastic bonding agent, at least some of the thermoplastic bonding agent being thermally bonded to at least some of the cellulose;

an air-permeable scrim having a first layer including a first material and having a coefficient of friction and a second layer of a second material that is different from the first material and having a coefficient of friction that is greater than the coefficient of friction of the first material.

8 . The non-woven product as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the cellulose is treated with a liquid fire-retardant, and then dried prior to web formation.

9 . The non-woven product as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the first layer of the scrim is formed from spunbond bicomponent fibers and the second layer is formed from meltblown polypropylene.

10 . The non-woven product as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the second layer is embossed.

11 . The non-woven product as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the first layer of the scrim has a melting point, and the second layer of the scrim has a melting point, and the melting points of each of the first and second layers are substantially the same as a melting point of the thermoplastic bonding agent.

12 . The non-woven product as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the thermoplastic bonding agent comprises bicomponent fibers.
