Abstract

The present invention relates generally to methods for generating a dynamic pilot symbol structure in spread spectrum communication systems, and in particular to the use of pilot symbols by user equipment in channel estimation. In one form, the method includes, allocating basic pilot symbols at the beginning of each data chunk and spread over the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies; and selectively replacing data symbols in each data chunk with adaptive pilot symbols according to the speed of the user equipment.

Claims (41)

1. A spread spectrum communications system, comprising:

a plurality of user equipments; and

a base station to transmit data symbols to each user equipment in parallel on a plurality of sub-carrier frequencies and at regular temporal positions during a transmission of a data chunk,

wherein the data symbols comprise first pilot symbols adaptive to said each user equipment and second pilot symbols fixed to the plurality of user equipments,

wherein the first pilot symbols for said each user equipment are inserted into the data chunk for said each user equipment,

wherein the base station transmits to said each user equipment pilot symbol information identifying a location of the first pilot symbols in the data chunk,

wherein said each user equipment utilizes the first pilot symbols for channel estimation, and

wherein the base station selectively replaces part of the data symbols in the data chunk with the first pilot symbols.

2. The spread spectrum communications system of claim 1 ,

wherein the first pilot symbols are distributed in the data chunk in the time domain.

3. The spread spectrum communications system of claim 1 ,

wherein the first pilot symbols are distributed in the data chunk in the frequency domain.

4. The spread spectrum communications system of claim 1 ,

wherein, prior to transmission of the data chunk, the base station transmits to said each user equipment pilot symbol information identifying a location of the first pilot symbols in the data chunk, and

wherein said each user equipment detects the first pilot symbols.

5. A communications method implemented in a base station used in a spread spectrum communications system having a plurality of user equipments, comprising:

inserting first pilot symbols for said each user equipment into data chunk for said each user equipment;

transmitting data symbols to each user equipment in parallel on a plurality of sub-carrier frequencies and at regular temporal positions during a transmission of the data chunk,

wherein the data symbols comprise the first pilot symbols adaptive to said each user equipment and second pilot symbols fixed to the plurality of user equipments;

transmitting to said each user equipment pilot symbol information identifying a location of the first pilot symbols in the data chunk to enable said each user equipment to utilize the first pilot symbols for channel estimation; and

selectively replacing part of the data symbols in the data chunk with the first pilot symbols.

6. The communications method of claim 5 ,

wherein the first pilot symbols are distributed in the data chunk in the time domain.

7. The communications method of claim 5 ,

wherein the first pilot symbols are distributed in the data chunk in the frequency domain.

8. The communications method of claim 5 , further comprising:

prior to transmission of the data chunk, transmitting to said each user equipment pilot symbol information identifying a location of the first pilot symbols in the data chunk to enable detection of the first pilot symbols by said each user equipment.

9. A communications method implemented in a user equipment used in a spread spectrum communications system having a base station, comprising:

receiving data symbols from the base station in parallel on a plurality of sub-carrier frequencies and at regular temporal positions during a transmission of a data chunk;

performing channel estimation using first pilot symbols,

wherein the data symbols comprise the first pilot symbols adaptive to the user equipment and second pilot symbols fixed to a plurality of user equipments, and

wherein the first pilot symbols for the user equipment are inserted into the data chunk for the user equipment; and

receiving from the base station pilot symbol information identifying a location of the first pilot symbols in the data chunk,

wherein the base station selectively replaces part of symbols in the data chunk with the first pilot symbols.

10. The communications method of claim 9 ,

wherein the first pilot symbols are distributed in the data chunk in the time domain.

11. The communications method of claim 9 ,

wherein the first pilot symbols are distributed in the data chunk in the frequency domain.

12. The communications method of claim 9 , further comprising:

prior to reception of the data chunk, receiving from the base station pilot symbol information identifying a location of the first pilot symbols in the data chunk; and

detecting the first pilot symbols.
