Abstract

A method for joining pipes comprising the steps of forming an unadhered pipe assembly comprised of a first pipe having a socket with an inside diameter, where said socket has a mouth that is an open end of the socket, a self-centering bottom and a substantially cylindrical wall with an inlet and an outlet, a second pipe inserted into and abutted against the bottom of the socket of the first pipe, said second pipe having an outside diameter that is less than the inside diameter of the socket, where the difference in diameters defines a gap and extruding an extrudable adhesive through the inlet substantially filing the gap, wherein the adhesive solidifies joining the first and second pipe.

Claims (18)

1. A method for joining pipes, said method comprising the steps of:

i. forming an unadhered pipe assembly comprised of a first pipe having a socket with an inside diameter, where said socket has a mouth that is an open end of the socket, a self-centering bottom and a substantially cylindrical wall, the substantially cylindrical wall having an inlet and an outlet and an inner annular channel, wherein the inlet and outlet are longitudinally offset from each other; and a second pipe inserted into and abutted against the bottom of the socket of the first pipe, said second pipe having an outer annular channel and an end, and said second pipe having an outside diameter that is less than the inside diameter of the socket, where the difference in diameters defines a longitudinally extending gap and where, when inserted into the first pipe, the outer annular channel of the second pipe and the inner annular channel of the first pipe are aligned with each other to form an interlocking keyway at one end of the longitudinally extending gap, wherein only the inlet is located at the interlocking keyway and wherein the inlet is in fluid communication with the outlet via the interlocking keyway and the longitudinally extending gap; and

ii. extruding an extrudable adhesive through the inlet to initially fill the interlocking keyway, then to fill the longitudinally extending gap, and then overflowing out the outlet, wherein the interlocking keyway creates an avenue for the extruded adhesive to distribute evenly around the circumference of the insertion section and then along the longitudinally extending gap, and wherein said adhesive solidifies to form a mechanical key in the interlocking keyway and to join the first and second pipes.

2. The method according to claim 1 further comprising the step of:

clamping the unadhered pipe assembly prior to extruding the adhesive.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the pipe assembly further comprises:

a flanged annular ring, where said annular ring has an inside diameter and is slid over the second pipe, a thickness that is comparable to the longitudinally extending gap and it is seated in the longitudinally extending gap, and a flange with a width that caps the mouth of the socket.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the pipe assembly further comprises:

a positive seal formed between the end of the second pipe and the bottom of the socket of the first pipe.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the extrudable adhesive is selected from the group consisting of: hot melt adhesives, cyanoacrylate adhesives, epoxy adhesives, urethane adhesives, boron catalyzed adhesives, free radical and high solids adhesives.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the extrudable adhesive is a high solids adhesive containing a boron catalyst.

The method according to claim 1 , wherein the extrudable adhesive is a two part adhesive suitable for bonding low energy surfaces, low surface energy plastic pipe and olefinic pipe selected from the group consisting of a two part epoxy adhesive, a two part urethane adhesive, a two part free radical adhesive, a two part acrylic adhesive containing a catalyst, and combination thereof.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pipe is comprised of an olefinic pipe material having a low surface energy and excellent resistance to solvents.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the olefinic pipe material is selected from the group consisting of: HDPE, PEX, polypropylene and PTFE.

10. The method according to claim 9 further comprising the step of clamping the unadhered pipe assembly prior to extruding the adhesive.

11. A method for joining pipes, said method comprising the steps of:

i. forming an unadhered pipe assembly comprised of a first pipe having a socket with an inside diameter, where said socket has a mouth that is an open end of the socket, a self-centering bottom, and a substantially cylindrical wall, the substantially cylindrical wall having an inlet and an outlet and an inner annular channel, wherein the inlet and outlet are longitudinally offset from each other; a second pipe having an insertion section with an end, where said insertion section of the second pipe is inserted into the socket of the first pipe, said second pipe having an outer annular channel and an end, and said second pipe having an outside diameter that is less than the inside diameter of the socket, where the difference in diameters defines a longitudinally extending gap, where, when inserted into the first pipe, the outer annular channel of the second pipe and the inner annular channel of the first pipe are aligned with each other to form an interlocking keyway at one end of the longitudinally extending gap, wherein only the inlet is located at the interlocking keyway and wherein the inlet is in fluid communication with the outlet via the interlocking keyway and the longitudinally extending gap; and a flanged annular ring, where said annular ring is slid over the second pipe and is seated in the gap and such that a flange thereof is flush with the mouth of the socket, therein centering the insertion section in the socket, capping the gap; and

ii. extruding an extrudable adhesive through the inlet to initially fill the interlocking keyway, then to fill the longitudinally extending gap, and then overflowing out the outlet, wherein the interlocking keyway creates an avenue for the extruded adhesive to distribute evenly around the circumference of the insertion section and then along the longitudinally extending, wherein said adhesive solidifies to form a mechanical key in the interlocking keyway and to join the first and second pipes.
