Abstract

An electronic device for encoding a picture is described. The electronic device includes a processor and instructions stored in memory that are in electronic communication with the processor. The instructions are executable to encode a step-wise temporal sub-layer access (STSA) sample grouping. The instructions are further executable to send and/or store the STSA sample grouping.

Claims (32)

1 . An electronic device for encoding a picture, comprising:

a processor;

memory in electronic communication with the processor, wherein instructions stored in the memory are executable to:

encode a step-wise temporal sub-layer access (STSA) sample grouping; and

send the STSA sample grouping.

2 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to send the STSA sample grouping further comprise instructions executable to store the STSA sample grouping in a recordable storage medium, and wherein the recordable storage medium is a file.

3 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions executable to encode the STSA sample grouping further comprise instructions executable to encode the STSA sample grouping based on an ISO base media file format, wherein the ISO base media file format has been extended to support high efficiency video coding (HEVC) video streams, and wherein the instructions executable to send the STSA sample grouping further comprise instructions executable to send the STSA sample grouping in an ISO base media file format.

4 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the STSA sample grouping is sent in a sample group description box (SGPD).

5 . The electronic device of claim 4 , wherein the SGPD includes one of a next STSA upswitching distance parameter, a next STSA sample distance parameter and a type temporal switching access (TSA) flag.

6 . The electronic device of claim 5 , wherein the type TSA flag indicates that a sample in the STSA sample grouping is one of a TSA sample and a STSA sample.

7 . The electronic device of claim 1 , wherein the STSA picture provides temporal layer switching functionality to a temporal layer for which the STSA picture belongs.

8 . An electronic device for decoding a picture, comprising:

a processor;

memory in electronic communication with the processor, wherein instructions stored in the memory are executable to:

receive one of a bitstream and a recordable storage medium;

obtain a step-wise temporal sub-layer access (STSA) sample grouping;

decode the STSA sample grouping; and

determine when to switch to a new temporal layer based on the STSA sample grouping.

9 . The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the recordable storage medium is a file.

10 . The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the instructions executable to receive the STSA sample grouping further comprise instructions executable to receive the STSA sample grouping in an ISO base media file, and wherein the instructions executable to decode the STSA sample grouping further comprise instructions executable to decode the STSA sample grouping based on an ISO base media file format, wherein the ISO base media file format has been extended to support high efficiency video coding (HEVC) video streams.

11 . The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the STSA sample grouping is sent in a sample group description box (SGPD).

12 . The electronic device of claim 11 , wherein the SGPD includes one of a next STSA upswitching distance parameter, a next STSA sample distance parameter and a type temporal switching access (TSA) flag.

13 . The electronic device of claim 12 , wherein the type TSA flag indicates that a sample in the STSA sample grouping is one of a TSA sample and a STSA sample.

14 . The electronic device of claim 8 , wherein the STSA picture provides temporal layer switching functionality to a temporal layer for which the STSA picture belongs.

15 . A method for encoding a picture, comprising:

encoding a step-wise temporal sub-layer access (STSA) sample grouping; and

sending the STSA sample grouping.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein sending the STSA sample grouping further comprises storing the STSA sample grouping in a recordable storage medium, and wherein the recordable storage medium is a file.

17 . The method of claim 15 , wherein encoding the STSA sample grouping further comprises encoding the STSA sample grouping based on an ISO base media file format, wherein the ISO base media file format has been extended to support high efficiency video coding (HEVC) video streams, and wherein the sending the STSA sample grouping further comprises sending the STSA sample grouping in an ISO base media file format.

18 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the STSA sample grouping is sent in a sample group description box (SGPD).

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the SGPD includes one of a next STSA upswitching distance parameter, a next STSA sample distance parameter and a type temporal switching access (TSA) flag.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the type TSA flag indicates that a sample in the STSA sample grouping is one of a TSA sample and a STSA sample.
