Abstract

A balloon dilation catheter includes a substantially rigid inner guide member and a movable shaft coupled to a balloon that is slidably mounted on the substantially rigid inner guide member. To treat a sinus cavity of a subject using the balloon dilation the substantially rigid inner guide member is advanced into a drainage pathway of the sinus (e.g., frontal recess) of the subject via a nasal passageway. The shaft and balloon are advanced in a distal direction over the substantially rigid inner guide member to place the balloon in the drainage pathway. The balloon is inflated to expand or otherwise remodel the drainage pathway.

Claims (57)

1. A method of treating a sinus cavity of a subject using a balloon dilation catheter, the method comprising:

providing a balloon dilation catheter that includes

a handle,

an inner guide member extending longitudinally from the handle,

a movable shaft coupled to a balloon and slidably mounted on the inner guide member, and

a balloon advancement member configured to advance the shaft and the balloon in a distal direction over the inner guide member;

advancing the inner guide member to a desired location in a drainage pathway of the sinus cavity of the subject via a nasal passageway;

advancing the shaft and balloon in the distal direction over the inner guide member while keeping the inner guide member static relative to the desired location in the drainage pathway, wherein advancing the shaft and balloon places the balloon at the desired location in the drainage pathway; and

inflating the balloon.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising tracking the movement of the inner guide member into a frontal recess using an image guided surgery system.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the image guided surgery system comprises a CT guidance system.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein, prior to inflation of the balloon, the inner guide member includes a lumen and a guide wire is inserted into the lumen and advanced until a distal portion extends from a distal end of the inner guide member.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the movable shaft defines at least a portion of an inflation lumen and a rider lumen, and wherein the inflation lumen is longer than the rider lumen.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein a proximal portion of the inflation lumen wraps around the inner guide member in a helical shape.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the balloon advancement member is directly coupled to the support member.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the balloon dilation catheter further includes an inflation lumen port that is in fluid communication with an interior portion of the balloon and is static relative to the inner guide member when the shaft and balloon are advanced over the inner guide member.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the handle is fixed to the inner guide member.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the operations of advancing the inner guide member to a desired location in a drainage pathway of the sinus cavity of the subject and advancing the shaft and balloon distally are performed with a single hand.

11. A method of treating a sinus cavity of a subject, the method comprising:

directing a distal portion of a balloon dilation catheter through a nostril of the subject, the balloon dilation catheter including

an inner guide member, and

a movable shaft coupled to a balloon and mounted on the inner guide member, wherein the balloon dilation catheter is configured to allow the shaft to move along the inner guide member and prevent the shaft from rotating around the inner guide member;

directing the inner guide member to a drainage pathway of the sinus cavity;

advancing the shaft and balloon over the inner guide member to place the balloon in the drainage pathway while keeping the inner guide member static relative to the drainage pathway; and

inflating the balloon.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the balloon dilation catheter further includes an inflation lumen port that is in fluid communication with an interior portion of the balloon and is static relative to the inner guide member when the shaft and balloon are advanced over the inner guide member.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the balloon dilation catheter further includes a support member attached to the shaft and an inflation lumen in fluid communication with an interior portion of the balloon, wherein the support member does not overlay a proximal portion of the inflation lumen.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the movable shaft defines at least a portion of an inflation lumen and a rider lumen, and wherein the inflation lumen is longer than the rider lumen.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein at least a portion of the inflation lumen has a helical shape.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the operations of directing the inner guide member to a drainage pathway of the sinus cavity and advancing the shaft and balloon over the inner guide member are performed with a single hand.

17. A method of treating a sinus cavity of a subject using a balloon dilation catheter, the method comprising:

providing a balloon dilation catheter that includes

an inner guide member,

a movable shaft coupled to a balloon and slidably mounted on the inner guide member, and

an inflation lumen in fluid communication with an interior portion of the balloon and in fluid communication with an inflation port,

wherein the balloon dilation catheter is configured to allow the shaft to move along the inner guide member while keeping fixed the position of the inflation port relative to the inner guide member;

advancing the inner guide member to a desired location in a drainage pathway of the sinus cavity of the subject via a nasal passageway;

advancing the shaft and balloon over the inner guide member to place the balloon in the drainage pathway while keeping the inner guide member static relative to the desired location in the drainage pathway; and

inflating the balloon.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the balloon dilation catheter further includes a support member attached to the shaft and at least a portion of the inflation lumen is defined by the shaft, and wherein the support member does not overlay a proximal portion of the inflation lumen.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the movable shaft defines at least a portion of the inflation lumen and a rider lumen, and wherein the inflation lumen is longer than the rider lumen.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein at least a portion of the inflation lumen has a helical shape.

21. The method of claim 17 , wherein the operations of advancing the inner guide member to a desired location in a drainage pathway of the sinus cavity of the subject and advancing the shaft and balloon over the inner guide member are performed with a single hand.

22. A method of treating a sinus cavity of a subject, the method comprising:

providing a balloon dilation catheter that includes

an inner guide member, and

a movable shaft coupled to a balloon and mounted on the inner guide member,

wherein the balloon dilation catheter is configured to allow a single hand to both position the inner guide member at a desired location and move the shaft along the inner guide member;

holding the balloon dilation catheter in a first hand;

moving the first hand to direct a distal portion of a balloon dilation catheter through a nostril of the subject;

moving the first hand to direct the inner guide member to a drainage pathway of the sinus cavity;

advancing the shaft and balloon with the first hand, the shaft and balloon being advanced over the inner guide member to place the balloon in the drainage pathway while keeping the inner guide member static relative to the drainage pathway; and

inflating the balloon.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the balloon dilation catheter further includes an inflation lumen port that is in fluid communication with an interior portion of the balloon and is static relative to the inner guide member when the shaft and balloon are advanced over the inner guide member.

24. The method of claim 23 , wherein the balloon dilation catheter further includes a support member attached to the shaft and an inflation lumen in fluid communication with an interior portion of the balloon, wherein the support member does not overlay a proximal portion of the inflation lumen.

25. The method of claim 22 , wherein the movable shaft defines at least a portion of an inflation lumen and a rider lumen, and wherein the inflation lumen is longer than the rider lumen.

26. The method of claim 25 , wherein at least a portion of the inflation lumen has a helical shape.
