Titania-containing extrudate
View Patent ↗An extrudate comprising titania, a carboxyalkyl cellulose, and a hydroxyalkyl cellulose is disclosed. The extrudates have a smooth outer surface when they exit the extruder. The extrusion processibility is improved.
1. A process for producing an extrudate comprising (a) mixing titania, a carboxyalkyl cellulose, and a hydroxyalkyl cellulose to form a dough; and (b) extruding the dough to produce the extrudate,
wherein the extrudate has an carboxyalkyl cellulose to hydroxyalkyl cellulose weight ratio of from 3:1 to 1:1.
2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the hydroxyalkyl cellulose is selected from the group consisting of 2-hydroxypropyl cellulose, 2-hydroxethyl cellulose, and mixtures thereof.
3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the hydroxyalkyl cellulose is selected from the group consisting of methyl 2-hydroxypropyl cellulose, methyl 2-hydroxethyl cellulose, and mixtures thereof.
4. A process for producing an extrudate comprising (a) mixing titania, a carboxyalkyl cellulose, and a hydroxyalkyl cellulose to form a dough; and (b) extruding the dough to produce the extrudate,
wherein the carboxyalkyl cellulose and the titania is present in a weight ratio of carboxyalkyl cellulose to titania between 1:100 and 3:100, and
wherein the hydroxyalkyl cellulose and the titania is present in a weight ratio of hydroxyalkyl cellulose to titania between 0.5:100 and 1:100.
5. The process of claim 4 , wherein the carboxyalkyl cellulose is a carboxymethyl cellulose.
6. The process of claim 4 , wherein the carboxyalkyl cellulose and the hydroxyalkyl cellulose is present in a weight ratio of carboxyalkyl cellulose to hydroxyalkyl cellulose between 5:1 and 1:2.
7. The process of claim 4 , wherein the carboxyalkyl cellulose and the hydroxyalkyl cellulose are present in a weight ratio of carboxyalkyl cellulose to hydroxyalkyl cellulose between 3:1 and 1:1.
8. The process of claim 4 , wherein the hydroxyalkyl cellulose is selected from the group consisting of 2-hydroxypropyl cellulose, 2-hydroxethyl cellulose, and mixtures thereof.
9. The process of claim 4 , wherein the hydroxyalkyl cellulose is selected from the group consisting of methyl 2-hydroxypropyl cellulose, methyl 2-hydroxethyl cellulose, and mixtures thereof.
10. The process of claim 4 , wherein the titania constitutes at least 10 weight percent of the extrudate.
11. The process of claim 4 , wherein the mixing step further comprises an inorganic oxide other than titania.
12. The process of claim 11 , wherein the inorganic oxide and titania are present in a weight ratio of inorganic oxide to titania less than 10:90.
13. The process of claim 4 , wherein the extrudate has a smoother outer surface than an extrudate not comprising the carboxyalkyl cellulose and the hydroxyalkyl cellulose.
14. The process of claim 4 , wherein the extrudate has less feathering than an extrudate not comprising the carboxyalkyl cellulose and the hydroxyalkyl cellulose.
15. The process of claim 4 , wherein the extrudate sticks to each other less than an extrudate not comprising the carboxyalkyl cellulose and the hydroxyalkyl cellulose.
16. The process of claim 4 , wherein the extrudate is more suitable for large scale production than an extrudate not comprising the carboxyalkyl cellulose and the hydroxyalkyl cellulose.
