Abstract

One or more arrays of heating elements are configured with insulating regions to prevent the dissipation of heat to unintended regions of a thermochromic substrate. Methods include printing and arranging impressions on a two-sided substrate avoiding bleeding and other problems more-commonly associated with traditional two-sided thermal printing techniques. A simple and reliable thermal printing system is provided for use in ballot marking, including several mechanisms for receiving and detecting the orientation of a substrate within a thermal printing apparatus.

Claims (15)

1. A method of marking a medium, comprising:

receiving the medium, in an initially unknown orientation, within an automated marking apparatus comprising a thermal printing system;

employing orientation indicators to detect the orientation of the medium;

accurately marking two sides of the medium with the automated marking apparatus based on the detected orientation, irrespective of the medium's orientation relative to a heating element of said thermal printing system;

wherein the medium comprises a two-sided thermochromic medium having at least one thermochromic area on each side of the medium and a corresponding non-thermochromic area on the opposite side of the medium, wherein the thermochromic areas on each side of the medium are arranged in an exclusionary manner such that actuating an active heating element of said automated marking apparatus does not substantially change the appearance of a thermochromic area on the opposite side of the substrate.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

accepting one or more inputs from a user via a user interface; and

wherein the marking step is based upon the user inputs.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the inputs comprise at least one response to at least one query.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the medium comprises a ballot.

5. A method of marking a medium, comprising:

receiving the medium, in an initially unknown orientation, within an automated marking apparatus;

determining a known orientation for the medium; and

marking at least one side of the medium with the automated marking apparatus based on the determined orientation;

wherein the medium comprises a two-sided thermochromic medium having at least one thermochromic area on each side of the medium and a corresponding non-thermochromic area on the opposite side of the medium, wherein the thermochromic areas on each side of the medium are arranged in an exclusionary manner such that actuating an active heating element of said automated marking apparatus does not substantially change the appearance of a thermochromic area on the opposite side of the substrate.
