Abstract

A method and system for dynamically adjusting the placement of internal content material to optimally position the content material relative to a wrapped enclosure, and obviate the requirement to out-sort the assembled envelope. Upon assembly, a detection system visually images each envelope in predetermined regions of interest (ROIs). A controller captures the image data for comparison with a set of predefined position data and issues a feedback signal indicative of a directional change which drives an error signal to zero. The correction signal is used by the phase nip roller assembly to adaptively adjust the position of the content material by incrementally adjusting, advancing or retarding, the phase-nip roller assembly, i.e., forward or aft. A predefined number of envelopes is selected to acquire a running average of the image data.

Claims (16)

1. A mailpiece fabrication system comprising:

a wrapping system having an open end for accepting content material, a wrapping section forming a tube-shaped wrap defining a plurality of content material stations therealong each having a sealing adhesive for enclosing the content material, and a rotary cutter operative to cut the tube-shaped wrap between the content material stations to produce a plurality of wrapped envelopes,

an imaging device arranged to optically image each of the wrapped envelopes and capture image data indicative of a spatial relationship between internal content material and one or more points of reference indicative of internal bounds of the sealing adhesive,

a phase-nip roller assembly for delivering content material to the open end of the wrapping system and adapted to incrementally adjust a position of each piece of content material relative to a respective content material station, and

a controller, in operative communication with the imaging device and the phase-nip roller assembly, receiving captured image data from the imaging device and configured to responsively compare the image data to a set of predefined acceptance criteria to produce a correction feedback signal, the controller being configured to use the correction feedback signal to control the phase-nip roller assembly to incrementally adjust the position of each piece of content material relative to the respective content material station.

2. The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 1 wherein the controller tracks a location of each piece of content material processed by the wrapping system along a feed path, and further comprising a means for out-sorting envelopes identified as defective.

3. The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 1 wherein the correction feedback signal is operative to center the content material into the respective content material station.

The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 1 wherein the phase-nip roller assembly includes a roller disposed above the content material and coupled to a vertical actuator that moves the phase-nip roller to engage or disengage in accordance with the correction feedback signal of the controller.

5. The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 1 wherein the imaging device includes a light source disposed on one side of the wrapped envelope and a light imaging camera on the opposite side of the wrapped envelope to receive light transmitted through the wrapped envelope.

6. The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 1 wherein the imaging device captures two images of each wrapped envelope at a Leading Edge (LE) Region of Interest (ROI) and a Trailing Edge (TE) Region of Interest (ROI).

The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 6 wherein the LE ROI is proximate to a leading edge of the wrapped envelope and includes a leading edge portion of the content material, and wherein the TE ROI is proximate to a trailing edge of the wrapped envelope and includes a trailing edge portion of the content material.

The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 7 wherein the LE ROI includes a portion of the sealing adhesive disposed along the leading edge of the wrapped envelope and the leading edge portion of the content material, and wherein the TE ROI includes a portion of the sealing adhesive disposed along the trailing edge of the wrapped envelope and the trailing edge portion of the content material.

9. The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 5 wherein the light source is strobed in time with the light imaging camera.

The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 5 wherein the light source illuminates the wrapped envelope with electromagnetic energy at or above nine-hundred and twenty nanometers (920 nm) in wavelength and further comprising a long band-pass filter which transmits at least ninety percent (90%) of the electromagnetic energy having a wavelength at or above nine-hundred and twenty nanometers (920 nm).

11. The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 10 wherein the imaging device is a near-Infrared Light Emitting Diode/phototransistor for viewing a restricted region along a line of the wrapped envelope.

12. The mailpiece fabrication system according to claim 10 wherein the predefined acceptance criteria is the difference between an actual value indicative of an edge location of the content material and a predefined reference value indicative of an edge location of the sealing adhesive.
