Abstract

A method of controlling a direction of a toolface of a bottom hole assembly for slide drilling, comprises a) synchronizing the toolface wherein synchronizing the toolface comprises determining a relationship between the rotational position of the down hole toolface with a rotational position at the surface of the formation for at least one point in time, b) stopping rotation of the drill string coupled to the bottom hole assembly, c) controlling torque at the surface of the drill string to control a rotational position of the toolface, and d) commencing a slide of the drill string.

Claims (19)

1. A method of controlling a direction of a toolface of a bottom hole assembly for slide drilling, comprising:

a) synchronizing the toolface wherein synchronizing the toolface comprises determining a relationship between the rotational position of the down hole toolface with a rotational position at the surface of the formation for at least one point in time;

b) stopping rotation of the drill string coupled to the bottom hole assembly;

c) controlling torque at the surface of the drill string to control a rotational position of the toolface; and

d) commencing a slide of the drill string,

further comprising unwinding the drill string during or after the synchronization.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein synchronization comprises dynamically computing a topside toolface.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein controlling torque at the surface of the drill string comprises applying a holding torque to the drill string with a rotary drive.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the holding torque is about equal to a mud motor output torque as computed using a differential pressure relationship.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the synchronization of the toolface is initiated while drilling in a rotary drilling mode wherein drilling is continued during a transition from the rotary drilling mode to a sliding drilling mode.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein a differential pressure is maintained on a mud motor during transition from a rotary mode of drilling to the slide drilling.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising automatically reducing a differential pressure from a target differential pressure during a transition from rotary drilling to slide drilling.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising automatically resuming a target differential pressure during transition once slide drilling is established.

9. A method of controlling a direction of a toolface of a bottom hole assembly for slide drilling, comprising:

a) synchronizing the toolface wherein synchronizing the toolface comprises determining a relationship between the rotational position of the down hole toolface with a rotational position at the surface of the formation for at least one point in time;

b) stopping rotation of the drill string coupled to the bottom hole assembly;

c) controlling torque at the surface of the drill string to control a rotational position of the toolface; and

d) commencing a slide of the drill string,

further comprising unwinding the drill string during or after the synchronization based on a torque and drag string windup model.
