Abstract

A peritoneal dialysis machine includes an enclosure; dialysate pump located within the enclosure; a graphical user interface allowing a patient to program a treatment including at least one patient fill performed by the dialysate pump, at least one dwell, and at least one drain performed by the dialysate pump; and the GUI further programmed to provide an alert when it is time to begin the treatment so as to complete the at least one patient fill, dwell and drain by a prescribed time.

Claims (45)

1. A dialysis machine for a home environment comprising:

an enclosure;

a dialysate pump located within the enclosure;

a user interface integrated into the enclosure and configured to display user interface information including at least a parameter associated with the dialysate pump;

at least one control feature for controlling the dialysate pump parameter, the control feature controllable by a patient in the home environment and including a keyboard projected from a keyboard projector integrated into the enclosure, the projected keyboard displayed on a first surface separate from the enclosure; and

a light projecting apparatus integrated into the enclosure and configured to project information from the dialysis machine onto a second surface more readily viewable by the patient than the user interface, wherein the projected information includes a plurality of different information display screens each displayed automatically in a scrolling cycle, the plurality of different information display screens including a portion, but not all, of the user interface information displayed on the user interface integrated into the enclosure,

wherein the first surface is separate from the second surface, and

wherein at least a portion of the information inputted via the projected keyboard is displayed by the light projecting apparatus on the second surface.

The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the enclosure includes at least one feature selected from the group consisting of: (i) a grip for a twist cap; (ii) fingers for a pull cap; (iii) an apparatus configured to break a frangible seal; (iv) a drawer for supplies; (v) a clamp configured to enable a patient to disconnect temporally from the machine; (vi) a night/reading light; and (vii) a utensil holder.

3. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the user interface includes at least one feature selected from the group consisting of: (i) a timer; (ii) an alarm clock; (iii) a music player; (iv) a patient selectable screen saver; (v) a patient selectable bezel; and (vi) a patient calendar.

4. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the projected keyboard is provided via a laser, the keyboard operating with an infrared plane of light that is interrupted to provide at least a portion of the control feature for controlling the dialysate pump parameter.

5. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the control feature further includes a touch screen with tactile feedback, a Braille interface, or a telecommunications device for the deaf (“TDD”) interface.

6. The dialysis machine of claim 5 , wherein the Braille interface includes characters formed in a touch screen overlay.

7. The dialysis machine of claim 5 , wherein the TDD includes a telephone connection, a keyboard and a video monitor.

8. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , which includes a remote device configured to operate with one or both of the user interface and the light projecting apparatus.

9. The dialysis machine of claim 8 , wherein the remote device communicates with at least one of the user interface or the light projecting apparatus via wired or wireless communication.

10. The dialysis machine of claim 9 , wherein the wireless communication uses wireless communication technology selected from the group consisting of: (a) WiFi; (b) Bluetooth; (c) Zigbee; and (d) infrared.

11. The dialysis machine of claim 8 , wherein the remote device enables the patient to perform at least one of:

(a) navigate to and modify the parameter displayed by the user interface; or

(b) selectively advance through the plurality of information display screens projected from the light projecting apparatus.

12. The dialysis machine of claim 5 , wherein the tactile feedback touch screen includes one of: (i) tactile bumps molded into an overlay of the touch screen; (ii) a sheet including tactile bumps laminated to the touch screen; and (iii) epoxy spots adhered to the touch screen.

13. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the projected information includes one or more of (a) time, (b) date, (c) ambient temperature, or (d) therapy information.

14. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the projected information is displayed in a single or in multiple colors.

15. The dialysis machine of claim 1 , wherein the scrolling cycle repeats the display of the different information display screens.

16. A dialysis machine for a home environment comprising:

an enclosure;

a dialysate pump located within the enclosure;

a user interface integrated into the enclosure and configured to display user interface information including at least a parameter associated with the dialysate pump;

at least one control feature for controlling the dialysate pump parameter, the at least one control feature controllable by a patient in the home environment and including a laser projector for projecting an infrared plane of light onto a board; and

a light projecting apparatus integrated into the enclosure and configured to project information from the dialysis machine onto a surface separate from the board more readily viewable by the patient than the user interface, wherein the projected information includes a plurality of different information display screens each displayed automatically in a scrolling cycle, the plurality of different information display screens including a portion, but not all, of the user interface information displayed on the user interface integrated into the enclosure,

wherein at least a portion of the information inputted via the infrared plane of light is displayed by the light projecting apparatus on the surface.

17. The dialysis machine of claim 16 , wherein the scrolling cycle repeats the display of the different information display screens.

18. The dialysis machine of claim 16 , wherein the infrared plane of light forms a virtual keyboard.

19. The dialysis machine of claim 16 , wherein the board includes a pre-printed keyboard template corresponding to the infrared plane of light.

20. A dialysis machine for a home environment comprising:

an enclosure;

a user interface integrated into the enclosure and configured to display dialysis treatment information;

at least one control feature for controlling the dialysis machine, the at least one control feature controllable by a patient in the home environment and including a laser projector removably mounted onto a board for projecting an infrared plane of light; and

a light projecting apparatus integrated into the enclosure and configured to project dialysis therapy status information from the dialysis machine onto a surface viewable by the patient, wherein the projected dialysis therapy status information includes a portion, but not all, of the dialysis treatment information displayed on the user interface integrated into the enclosure,

wherein the board is separate from the surface, and

wherein at least a portion of the information inputted via the infrared plane of light is displayed by the light projecting apparatus on the surface.

21. The dialysis machine of claim 20 , wherein the projected dialysis therapy status information includes a plurality of different information display screens each displayed in a scrolling cycle.

22. The dialysis machine of claim 20 , wherein the infrared plane of light forms a virtual keyboard.

23. The dialysis machine of claim 20 , wherein the infrared plane of light is projected onto the board, and wherein the board includes a pre-printed keyboard template corresponding to the infrared plane of light.

24. The dialysis machine of claim 20 , wherein the board is configured to be tilted, by the patient, at an angle to the patient.
