Abstract

A biopsy device having a cannula and a translating and rotating cutter with respect to the cannula is disclosed. The biopsy device may have a programmable memory for use in operating the cutter. The biopsy device may also include a reservoir, and may be functional to provide a flow of pressurized liquid through the cutter.

Claims (26)

1. A biopsy device comprising:

(a) a disposable probe comprising:

(i) a cannula extending distally from the biopsy device, and

(ii) a cutter rotatable and translatable with respect to the cannula, wherein the cutter is operable to sever tissue received by the cannula;

(b) a reusable portion, wherein the disposable probe is adapted to be releasably joined to the reusable portion to form a handpiece, wherein the reusable portion comprises:

(i) at least one motor for providing movement of the cutter, and

(ii) a memory device for storing at least one current profile for the at least one motor; and

wherein the cutter is adapted to continue to rotate upon the cutter translation being stopped at a predetermined position.

2. The biopsy device of claim 1 wherein the at least one motor comprises a first motor for providing rotation of the cutter and a second motor for providing translation of the cutter.

3. The biopsy device of claim 2 , wherein the first and second motors are DC motors.

4. The biopsy device of claim 1 , wherein the memory device is reprogrammable.

5. The biopsy device of claim 1 comprising a current profile for advancing the cutter and a current profile for retracting the cutter.

6. The biopsy device of claim 5 , wherein the current profile for advancing the cutter is different from the current profile for retracting the cutter.

7. The biopsy device of claim 1 , wherein the biopsy device is adapted to determine if a predetermined period of time has elapsed upon the cutter reaching a predetermined position.

8. A biopsy device comprising:

(a) a handpiece, wherein the handpiece is configured to be operated by a single hand;

(b) a cannula extending distally from the handpiece;

(c) a cutter movable with respect to the cannula, wherein the cutter is operable to sever tissue received by the cannula;

(d) a reservoir in fluid communication with the cutter;

(e) at least one motor for providing movement of the cutter, wherein

the at least one motor is housed in the handpiece;

(f) a memory device for storing data corresponding to a desired operation of the cutter; and

wherein the biopsy device is operable to provide a flow of liquid through the cutter.

9. The biopsy device of claim 8 , wherein the cannula comprises a lateral tissue receiving feature.

10. The biopsy device of claim 9 , wherein the cutter is disposed within the cannula.

11. The biopsy device of claim 8 , wherein the handpiece comprises an actuator operable to actuate movement of the cutter.
