Abstract

This disclosure relates to methods and systems for delivering content such as enhanced television applications over a network. In one exemplary method, a request for a content item is received. The request is added to a request queue. Each application requested is then identified and then the exemplary method waits for the occurrence of a predetermined event. Upon the occurrence of a predetermined event, the exemplary method provides for sending a single instance of each content item, regardless of the number of requests for each such content item.

Claims (36)

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a computing device, at least one request for a content item from one or more requesting devices of a plurality of devices;

adding the at least one request for the content item to a request queue;

identifying, upon an occurrence of a predetermined event, the content item requested;

associating a first identifier of the computing device with a single instance of the content item; and

transmitting the single instance of the content item requested to the plurality of devices, regardless of a number of requests for the content item, wherein the first identifier of the computing device associated with the single instance of the content item is used by the one or more requesting devices to select the content item that the one or more requesting devices requested.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined event comprises at least one of an expiration of a timer, exceeding a threshold number of requests in the request queue for the content item, or detecting additional network bandwidth.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

storing a second identifier of the computing device;

determining whether the stored second identifier of the computing device matches the first identifier of the computing device associated with the single instance of the content item; and

in response to determining that a match exists, selecting the content item.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the first identifier of the computing device and the second identifier of the computing device each comprise a sixteen-bit value.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one request for the content item is made by an addressable converter.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content item comprises an enhanced television application.

7. A system, comprising:

a plurality of devices;

a network controller configured to receive at least one request for a content item from one or more requesting devices of the plurality of devices; and

a computing device, configured to receive the at least one request for the content item from the network controller and add the at least one request to a request queue,

wherein the computing device, upon the occurrence of a predetermined event, identifies the content item in the request queue and transmits one instance of the content item requested, without regard to a number of requests for the content item in the request queue, and

wherein the content item is delivered to each of the plurality of devices and is selected by the one or more requesting devices.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the predetermined event comprises at least one of an expiration of a timer, exceeding a threshold number of requests in the request queue for the content item, or detecting additional network bandwidth.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more requesting devices comprises a set top box.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein each of the plurality of devices is configured to filter out content items it did not request.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the one or more requesting devices store a first identifier of the computing device from which the one or more requesting devices requested the content item.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first identifier of the computing device comprises a sixteen bit value.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the network controller inserts a second identifier of the computing device in each content item that the network controller receives prior to delivery of the content item to the plurality of devices.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more requesting devices identify the content item based on the second identifier of the computing device inserted into the content item.

15. A method, comprising:

receiving a first request for a content item from a first device of a plurality of devices;

receiving a second request for the content item from a second device of the plurality of devices;

adding the first request and the second request to a request queue;

determining an occurrence of a predetermined event; and

providing, based on the occurrence of the predetermined event and the request queue, the content item to the plurality of devices through a single content transmission, wherein the content item is provided with a first identifier, and wherein the first device is configured to identify the content item based on matching the first identifier to a resource locator associated with the first request.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising identifying, in response to the occurrence of the predetermined event, the content item based on the request queue.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the predetermined event comprises at least one of an expiration of a timer, exceeding a threshold number of requests in the request queue for the content item, or detecting additional bandwidth.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the first request for the content item and the second request for the content item are made by an addressable converter.
