Abstract

The present invention relates to the method and use of reef coral fluorescent proteins in making transgenic red, green and yellow fluorescent zebrafish. Preferably, such fluorescent zebrafish are fertile and used to establish a population of transgenic zebrafish and to provide to the ornamental fish industry for the purpose of marketing. Thus, new varieties of ornamental fish of different fluorescence colors from a novel source are developed.

Claims (25)

1. A fluorescent progeny fish of a transgenic fluorescent zebrafish wherein, the zebrafish and progeny both exhibit fluorescence and comprise:

a) the Red zebrafish 1 transformation event; or

b) the Green zebrafish 1 transformation event; or

c) the Yellow zebrafish 1 transformation event, sperm comprising said Red zebrafish 1 transformation event, said Green zebrafish 1 transformation event and said Yellow zebrafish 1 transformation event having been deposited as ECACC accession no. 06090403, ECACC accession no. 06090401 and ECACC accession no. 06090402, respectively.

2. The progeny fish of claim 1 , wherein the zebrafish and progeny comprise the Red zebrafish 1 transformation event.

3. The progeny fish of claim 1 , wherein the zebrafish and progeny comprise the Green zebrafish 1 transformation event.

4. The progeny fish of claim 1 , wherein the zebrafish and progeny comprise the Yellow zebrafish 1 transformation event.

5. The progeny fish of claim 1 , further defined as a fertile, transgenic zebrafish.

6. The progeny fish of claim 1 , further defined as a transgenic Golden zebrafish.

7. The progeny fish of claim 1 , wherein the fish is homozygous for the transformation event.

8. The progeny fish of claim 1 , wherein the fish is heterozygous for the transformation event.

9. A method of providing a transgenic fish that exhibits a fluorescence to the ornamental fish market, comprising obtaining a progeny fish in accordance with claim 1 , and distributing the fish to the ornamental fish market.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the fish are distributed by a grower to a commercial distributor.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the fish are distributed by a grower or a commercial distributor to a retailer.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the retailer is a multi-product retailer having an ornamental fish department.

13. A method of producing a transgenic fish comprising:

(a) obtaining a transgenic, fluorescent zebrafish that exhibits a fluorescence and comprises:

i) the Red zebrafish 1 transformation event; or

ii) the Green zebrafish 1 transformation event; or

iii) the Yellow zebrafish 1 transformation event, sperm comprising said Red zebrafish 1 transformation event, said Green zebrafish 1 transformation event and said Yellow zebrafish 1 transformation event having been deposited as ECACC accession no. 06090403, ECACC accession no. 06090401 and ECACC accession no. 06090402, respectively; and

(b) breeding the obtained zebrafish with a second fish to provide a transgenic, fluorescent progeny fish comprising the transformation event.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the obtained zebrafish and the progeny fish comprise the Red zebrafish 1 transformation event.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the obtained zebrafish and the progeny fish comprise the Green zebrafish 1 transformation event.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the obtained zebrafish and the progeny fish comprise the Yellow zebrafish 1 transformation event.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the second fish is a non-transgenic fish.
