Abstract

The present inventions, in one aspect, are directed to a portable activity monitoring device to calculate a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by a user, the monitoring device comprising (i) a housing having a physical size and shape that is adapted to couple to the body of the user, (ii) an altitude sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect a change in altitude of the user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of the change in altitude of the user, and (iii) processing circuitry, disposed in the housing and coupled to the motion sensor and the altitude sensor, to calculate a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user using the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user.

Claims (53)

1. A portable activity monitoring device, adapted to couple to a body of a user, to calculate a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user, the portable activity monitoring device comprising:

a housing having a physical size and shape that is adapted to couple to the body of the user;

an altitude sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect a change in altitude of the user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of the change in altitude of the user; and

processing circuitry, disposed in the housing and electrically coupled to the altitude sensor, to calculate a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user using the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user.

2. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 1 further including a display, coupled to the processing circuitry and disposed in or on the housing, to output data which is representative of the number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user.

3. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 1 further including a motion sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect motion of a user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of motion of the user and wherein:

the processing circuitry calculates the number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user using the data which is representative of motion of the user and the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 3 wherein the processing circuitry calculates the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs using (i) data which is representative of a change in altitude per step and (ii) data which is representative of a change in altitude for a given time period.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 3 wherein the processing circuitry calculates a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by determining the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs by calculating a change in altitude over one or more steps of the user using (i) data which is representative of motion of the user and (ii) data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 3 wherein the processing circuitry calculates a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by determining the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs based on (i) a change in altitude of the user per step being within or exceeding a first threshold range and (ii) a change in altitude of the user over a given time period being within or exceeding a second threshold range.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 3 wherein the processing circuitry calculates a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by determining the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs based on evaluating (i) a change in altitude in relation to a first threshold, and (ii) a change in altitude of the user per step in relation to a second threshold range and (iii) a change in altitude of the user over a given time period in relation to a third threshold range.

8. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 3 wherein the processing circuitry:

determines a change in elevation of the user when (i) the data which is representative of motion of the user exceeds a motion-related threshold and (ii) the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user exceeds an altitude-related threshold, and

calculates data which is representative of an accumulation of changes in elevation of the user.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 8 wherein the processing circuitry calculates a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by correlating the data which is representative of an accumulation of changes in elevation of the user to a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user.

10. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 1 further including a motion sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect motion of a user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of motion of the user and wherein:

the processing circuitry calculates a number of steps traversed by the user using the data which is representative of motion of the user.

11. A portable activity monitoring device, adapted to couple to a body of a user, to calculate a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user, the portable activity monitoring device comprising:

a housing having a physical size and shape that is adapted to couple to the body of the user;

an altitude sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect a change in altitude of the user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of the change in altitude of the user; and

processing circuitry, disposed in the housing and coupled to the altitude sensor, to correlate the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user to a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user.

12. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 11 further including a display, coupled to the processing circuitry and disposed in or on the housing, to output data of a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user.

13. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 11 further including a motion sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect motion of a user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of motion of the user and wherein:

the processing circuitry correlates the number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user using the data which is representative of motion of the user and the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 13 wherein the processing circuitry correlates the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs using (i) data which is representative of a change in altitude per step and (ii) data which is representative of a change in altitude for a given time period.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 13 wherein the processing circuitry correlates the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user to a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by determining the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs by calculating a change in altitude over one or more steps of the user using (i) data which is representative of motion of the user and (ii) data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 13 wherein the processing circuitry correlates the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user to a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by determining the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs based on (i) a change in altitude of the user per step being within or exceeding a first threshold range and (ii) a change in altitude of the user over a given time period being within or exceeding a second threshold range.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 13 wherein the processing circuitry correlates the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user to a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by determining the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs based on evaluating (i) a change in altitude in relation to a first threshold, and (ii) a change in altitude of the user per step in relation to a second threshold range and (iii) a change in altitude of the user over a given time period in relation to a third threshold range.

18. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 13 wherein the processing circuitry:

determines a change in elevation of the user when (i) the data which is representative of motion of the user exceeds a motion-related threshold and (ii) the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user exceeds an altitude-related threshold, and

correlates the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user to a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by accumulating changes in elevation of the user.

19. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 11 further including a motion sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect motion of a user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of motion of the user and wherein:

the processing circuitry calculates a number of steps traversed by the user using the data which is representative of motion of the user.

20. A portable activity monitoring device adapted to couple to a body of a user, the portable activity monitoring device comprising:

a housing having a physical size and shape that is adapted to couple to the body of the user;

a motion sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect motion of a user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of motion of the user;

an altitude sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect a change in altitude of the user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of the change in altitude of the user;

processing circuitry, disposed in the housing and coupled to the motion sensor and the altitude sensor, to calculate:

a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user using the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user, and

a calorie burn of the user using the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user, and

a display, coupled to the processing circuitry and disposed in or on the housing, to output data which is representative of the number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user.

21. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 20 further including a motion sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect motion of a user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of motion of the user and wherein the processing circuitry:

calculates the number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user using the data which is representative of motion of the user and the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 21 wherein the processing circuitry calculates the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs using (i) data which is representative of a change in altitude per step and (ii) data which is representative of a change in altitude for a given time period.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 21 wherein the processing circuitry calculates a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by determining the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs by calculating a change in altitude over one or more steps of the user using (i) data which is representative of motion of the user and (ii) data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 21 wherein the processing circuitry calculates a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by determining the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs based on (i) a change in altitude of the user per step being within or exceeding a first threshold range and (ii) a change in altitude of the user over a given time period being within or exceeding a second threshold range.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 21 wherein the processing circuitry calculates a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by determining the user traverses one or more stairs or flights of stairs based on evaluating (i) a change in altitude in relation to a first threshold, and (ii) a change in altitude of the user per step in relation to a second threshold range and (iii) a change in altitude of the user over a given time period in relation to a third threshold range.

26. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 21 wherein the processing circuitry:

determines a change in elevation of the user when (i) the data which is representative of motion of the user exceeds a motion-related threshold and (ii) the data which is representative of a change in altitude of the user exceeds an altitude-related threshold, and

calculates data which is representative of an accumulation of changes in elevation of the user.

The portable activity monitoring device of claim 21 wherein the processing circuitry calculates a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user by correlating the data which is representative of an accumulation of changes in elevation of the user to a number of stairs or flights of stairs traversed by the user.

28. The portable activity monitoring device of claim 20 further including a motion sensor, disposed in the housing, to detect motion of a user and, in response thereto, to generate data which is representative of motion of the user and wherein:

the processing circuitry calculates a number of steps traversed by the user using the data which is representative of motion of the user.
