Abstract

A cash dispensing automated banking machine includes a card reader associated with a card slot. An anti-fraud sensing device is able to sense ambient light or generated radiation that passes to the sensing device through the card reader slot. The installation of an unauthorized card reading device on the machine changes at least one property sensed by the sensing device. A controller in the machine receives signals from the sensing device, and determines if an unauthorized card reading device has been installed.

Claims (99)

1. A method comprising:

(a) installing at least one sensor adjacent to a card entry slot of an automated banking machine,

wherein the machine includes a plurality of transaction function devices,

wherein the plurality of transaction function devices include at least one data reader, a display, and a cash dispenser,

wherein the at least one data reader includes a card reader that is operable to read card data usable to identify a financial account on which financial transactions can be carried out with the machine,

wherein the at least one sensor is operable to sense at least one electromagnetic field property of material located adjacent to the card entry slot;

(b) installing at least one signal emitter adjacent to the card entry slot,

wherein the at least one signal emitter is operable to output interference signals configured to interfere with card data reading by an unauthorized card reader located adjacent to the card entry slot; and

(c) equipping the machine to include a controller that is in operative connection with the at least one sensor and the at least one signal emitter,

wherein the controller is operable to determine whether the at least one sensor senses a change in the at least one electromagnetic field property,

wherein the controller is operable to determine whether a sensed change in the at least one electromagnetic field property exists for a predetermined duration,

wherein the controller is operable responsive at least in part to a determination that the sensed change existed for the predetermined duration, to

 cause the at least one signal emitter to output the interference signals,

 cause at least one of the plurality of transaction function devices to cease operation, and

 allow the machine to provide at least one indication that an unauthorized card reader was sensed by the at least one sensor.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the machine is part of a banking system that includes a plurality of automated banking machines, wherein the controller includes at least one processor, wherein the at least one data reader includes a biometric reader, and further comprising:

(d) operating the card reader to read card data;

(e) operating the biometric reader to read biometric data;

(f) authorizing a user to use the machine to carry out a cash dispensing transaction involving the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to each of:

computer-determined correspondence between the card data read in (d) and stored card information,

computer-determined correspondence between the biometric data read in (e) and stored biometric information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the card data read in (d) and the biometric data read in (e).

3. The method according to claim 1 wherein the at least one electromagnetic field property includes inductance, wherein (a) includes installing at least one inductance sensor,

wherein in (c) the controller is operable to determine whether the at least one inductance sensor senses a material inductance level change which is indicative of additional material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

4. The method according to claim 1 wherein the electromagnetic field property includes capacitance, wherein (a) includes installing at least one capacitance sensor,

wherein in (c) the controller is operable to determine whether the at least one capacitance sensor senses a material capacitance level change which is indicative of additional material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

5. Apparatus comprising:

at least one sensor operationally positionable to sense at least one electromagnetic field property of material located adjacent to a card entry slot of an automated banking machine which includes a plurality of transaction function devices comprising a display, a cash dispenser, and at least one data reader that comprises a card reader which is operable to read card data usable to identify a financial account on which financial transactions can be carried out with the machine,

at least one signal emitter operationally positionable adjacent to the card entry slot, to output interference signals configured to interfere with card data reading by an unauthorized card reader located adjacent to the card entry slot,

a controller operationally positionable in the machine in operative connection with the at least one sensor and the at least one signal emitter, to:

(i) determine whether the at least one sensor senses a change in the at least one electromagnetic field property,

(ii) responsive at least in part to a positive determination in (i), then determine whether the change exists for a predetermined duration, and

(iii) responsive at least in part to a positive determination in (ii), then

cause the at least one signal emitter to output the interference signals,

cause at least one of the plurality of transaction function devices to cease operation, and

allow the machine to provide at least one indication that an unauthorized card reader was sensed by the at least one sensor.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the at least one electromagnetic field property includes inductance, wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one inductance sensor,

wherein the controller is operationally positionable to determine whether the at least one inductance sensor senses a material inductance level change which is indicative of additional material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

7. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the at least one electromagnetic field property includes capacitance, wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one capacitance sensor,

wherein the controller is operationally positionable to determine whether the at least one capacitance sensor senses a material capacitance level change which is indicative of additional material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

8. A method comprising:

(a) installing at least one sensor adjacent to a card entry slot of an automated banking machine,

wherein the machine includes a card reader that is operable to read card data usable to identify a financial account,

wherein the at least one sensor is operable to sense at least one property of material located adjacent to the card entry slot;

(b) installing at least one signal emitter adjacent to the card entry slot,

wherein the at least one signal emitter is operable to output interference signals configured to interfere with card data reading by an unauthorized card reader; and

(c) equipping the machine to include a controller that is in operative connection with the at least one sensor and the at least one signal emitter,

wherein the controller is operable to determine whether the at least one sensor sensed a change in the at least one property of material,

wherein the controller is operable responsive at least in part to a determination that the at least one sensor sensed a change in the at least one property of material, to both:

cause the at least one signal emitter to output the interference signals, and

allow at least one indication that an unauthorized card reader was sensed by the at least one sensor, to be provided.

The method according to claim 8 wherein the machine is part of a banking system that includes a plurality of automated banking machines, wherein the machine a cash dispenser and at least one data reader, wherein the at least one data reader includes both a biometric reader and the card reader, wherein the controller includes at least one processor, and further comprising:

(d) operating the card reader to read card data;

(e) operating the biometric reader to read biometric data;

(f) authorizing a user to use the machine to carry out a cash dispensing transaction involving the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to each of:

computer-determined correspondence between the card data read in (d) and stored card information,

computer-determined correspondence between the biometric data read in (e) and stored biometric information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the card data read in (d) and the biometric data read in (e).

10. The method according to claim 8 wherein in (a) the at least one sensor is operable to sense at least one electromagnetic field property of the material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

11. The method according to claim 10 wherein the at least one electromagnetic field property includes inductance, wherein (a) includes installing at least one inductance sensor,

wherein in (c) the controller is operable to determine whether the at least one inductance sensor senses a material inductance level change which is indicative of additional material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

12. The method according to claim 10 wherein the electromagnetic field property includes capacitance, wherein (a) includes installing at least one capacitance sensor,

wherein in (c) the controller is operable to determine whether the at least one capacitance sensor senses a material capacitance level change which is indicative of additional material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

The method according to claim 8 wherein in (c) the controller is operable to allow the at least one indication to be provided by causing at least one message suggestive that an unauthorized card reader is present adjacent to the card entry slot, to be sent to at least one remote computer that is located remotely from the machine.

14. The method according to claim 8 wherein the controller includes at least one processor,

wherein the machine includes a plurality of transaction function devices comprising a display, a cash dispenser, and at least one data reader,

wherein the at least one data reader includes the card reader,

wherein the card reader is operable to read card data usable to identify a financial account on which financial transactions can be carried out with the machine,

wherein the controller in (c) is operable to determine whether a sensed change in the at least one property of material exists for a predetermined duration,

wherein the controller in (c) is operable responsive at least in part to a determination that the sensed change existed for the predetermined duration, to

cause the at least one signal emitter to output the interference signals,

cause at least one of the plurality of transaction function devices to cease operation, and

allow the machine to provide at least one indication that an unauthorized card reader was sensed by the at least one sensor.

15. Apparatus comprising:

at least one sensor operationally positionable to sense at least one property of material located adjacent to a card entry slot of an automated banking machine which includes a card reader which is operable to read card data usable to identify a financial account,

at least one signal emitter operationally positionable adjacent to the card entry slot, to output interference signals configured to interfere with card data reading by an unauthorized card reader,

a controller operationally positionable in the machine in operative connection with the at least one sensor and the at least one signal emitter, to both:

determine whether the at least one sensor sensed a change in the at least one property of material, and

then, responsive at least in part to a determination that the at least one sensor sensed a change in the at least one property of material, both:

cause the at least one signal emitter to output the interference signals, and

allow at least one indication that an unauthorized card reader was sensed by the at least one sensor, to be provided.

16. The apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the at least one sensor is operationally positionable to sense at least one electromagnetic field property of the material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the at least one electromagnetic field property includes inductance, wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one inductance sensor,

wherein the controller is operationally positionable in the machine to determine whether the at least one inductance sensor senses a material inductance level change which is indicative of additional material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

18. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the at least one electromagnetic field property includes capacitance, wherein the at least one sensor comprises at least one capacitance sensor,

wherein the controller is operationally positionable in the machine to determine whether the at least one capacitance sensor senses a material capacitance level change which is indicative of additional material located adjacent to the card entry slot.

The apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the controller is operationally positionable in the machine to allow the at least one indication to be provided by causing at least one message suggestive that an unauthorized card reader is present adjacent to the card entry slot, to be sent to at least one remote computer that is located remotely from the machine.

20. The apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the controller includes at least one processor,

wherein the controller is operationally positionable in a machine that includes a plurality of transaction function devices comprising a display, a cash dispenser, and at least one data reader,

wherein the at least one data reader includes the card reader,

wherein the card reader is operable to read card data usable to identify a financial account on which financial transactions can be carried out with the machine,

wherein the controller is operationally positionable in the machine to determine whether a sensed change in the at least one property of material exists for a predetermined duration,

wherein the controller is operationally positionable in the machine to:

(i) determine whether the at least one sensor senses a change in the at least one property of material,

(ii) responsive at least in part to a positive determination in (i), then determine whether the change exists for a predetermined duration, and

(iii) responsive at least in part to a positive determination in (ii), then

cause the at least one signal emitter to output the interference signals,

cause at least one of the plurality of transaction function devices to cease operation, and

allow the machine to provide at least one indication that an unauthorized card reader was sensed by the at least one sensor.
