Abstract

A social gift registry provides tools to aid those planning for major milestones in life to engage a network of friends, family, and others in communicating information about the life event, helping to identify and track gifts for the celebrants, and enabling the management of the activities involved in the celebration.

Claims (129)

1. A system for operating a gift registry for registering gift preferences of a plurality of registrants, the system comprising:

a first collection of data comprising, for each of the plurality of registrants, information identifying one or more of a product item or a service of an e-commerce company and corresponding status information for each product item or service;

a second collection of data comprising information characteristic of each of the plurality of registrants;

a third collection of data comprising information identifying members of each of a plurality of social networks, each social network corresponding to one registrant of the plurality of registrants and comprising one or more individuals known to the one registrant;

the e-commerce company hosting the gift registry and including at least one processor having access to the first collection, the second collection, and the third collection, the at least one processor operable to, at least:

provide single sign on (SSO) authentication at a website of the e-commerce company;

send an SSO token to an authentication service for SSO authentication, wherein the authentication service is in communication with the website of the e-commerce company and the website of the gift registry;

in response to the SSO authentication, filter the SSO token and send the filtered SSO token to a website of the gift registry;

validate, via the website of the gift registry and the authentication service, the filtered SSO token from the website of the e-commerce company;

provide a social media web application of the e-commerce company based on the third collection of data that supports social interaction between each registrant and the members of the corresponding social network;

cause, via a selection of one or more graphical elements of a graphical user interface, the social media web application of the e-commerce company to enable the registrant and one or more event planners designated by the registrant to plan an event relating to the gift registry via communication between the registrant, the members of the corresponding social network, and the one or more event planners;

cause, via a selection of one or more graphical elements of a graphical user interface, the social media web application of the e-commerce company to enable the registrant to designate the one or more event planners who, via a graphical user interface of the social media web application of the e-commerce company, can send out invitations for the event, manage a guest list, send out reminders, and handle communication related to the event;

enable, via a selection of one or more graphical elements of a graphical user interface, the gift registry to be populated with one or more starter registry options listing the product items or the services appropriate for the event and one or more product items or services from other gift registries of other registrants of the e-commerce company, wherein the other gift registries of the other registrants were made public via selections of graphical elements of other graphical user interfaces;

store, in the first collection, information identifying one of a product item or a service selected by the one registrant;

display, via a graphical user interface, product item or service information for the one registrant from the first collection to a member of the corresponding social network;

update the corresponding status information for the displayed product item or service for the one registrant, responsive to an action by the member with respect to the product item or service;

automatically generate one or more messages communicating actions of any members of the social network of the one registrant with respect to the one or more of a product item or a service and corresponding status information for each product item or service, of the registrant, in the first collection; and

notify at least one member of the social network of the one registrant other than the one registrant, of the updated status.

The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor of the e-commerce company supports a communication hub of the e-commerce company that supports the communication related and unrelated to the gift registry, wherein the communication hub is configured to allow collaboration between the one registrant and the one or more individuals known to the one registrant regarding event planning and gift items to select for the gift registry.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the status information comprises one or both of an indication of a quantity and an indication of purchase of the corresponding product item or service for the one registrant.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein membership in the social network is controlled by the one registrant, or wherein notification is controlled by the one registrant.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor operable to, at least:

configure the social media web application of the e-commerce company so that the registrant can designate one or more members of the corresponding social network to become co-registrants or collaborators that can create, modify, and manage the gift registry; and

configure the social media web application of the e-commerce company to support communication related to the gift registry and communication not related to the gift registry between each registrant, the members of the corresponding social network, and the one or more event planners.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein member access to information in the first collection is controlled by the one registrant.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein an ability of a member to add a product item or a service to the first collection is controlled by the one registrant.

8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operable to, at least:

automatically send one or more messages to one or both of the one registrant and members of the corresponding social network, wherein at least one date of sending and content of the one or more messages is determined based upon a type of social event and associated event date specified by the one registrant.

9. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operable to, at least:

communicate, to the one registrant, when an out of stock condition has occurred for a product item identified for the one registrant in the first collection.

10. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operable to, at least:

communicate, to the one registrant, when a product item identified for the one registrant is available from a vendor at a reduced cost.

11. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operable to, at least:

enable communication among the one registrant and members of the corresponding social network.

12. The system according to claim 11 , wherein the communication among the one registrant and members of the corresponding social network is merged to produce a feed viewable by one or both of the one registrant and the members of the social network.

13. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operable to, at least:

responsive to the one registrant, populate the first collection for the one registrant with one or both of product items or services of a gift registry created by someone other than the one registrant.

14. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operable to, at least:

prompt the one registrant to enable or disable one or more permissions regarding member access to the first collection and notifications; and

store the one or more permissions for the one registrant in the second collection.

15. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the action by the member with respect to the product item or service comprises purchasing the product item or service.

16. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the action by the member with respect to the product item or service comprises posting a comment about the product item or service.

17. A method of operating a gift registry for registering gift preferences of a plurality of registrants, the method comprising:

providing single sign on (SSO) authentication at a website of the e-commerce company;

sending an SSO token to an authentication service for SSO authentication, wherein the authentication service is in communication with the website of the e-commerce company and the website of the gift registry;

in response to the SSO authentication, filtering the SSO token and sending the filtered SSO token to a website of the gift registry;

validating, via the web site of the gift registry and the authentication service, the filtered SSO token from the website of the e-commerce company;

providing a social media web application of the e-commerce company that supports social interaction between each registrant of a respective gift registry and the members of the corresponding social network of each registrant;

configuring, via a selection of one or more graphical elements of a graphical user interface, the social media web application of the e-commerce company to enable the registrant and one or more event planners designated by the registrant to plan an event relating to the gift registry via communication between the registrant, the members of the corresponding social network, and the one or more event planners;

configuring, via a selection of one or more graphical elements of a graphical user interface, the social media web application of the e-commerce company to enable the registrant to designate the one or more event planners who, via a graphical user interface of the social media web application of the e-commerce company, can send out invitations for the event, manage a guest list, send out reminders, and handle communication related to the event;

enabling, via a selection of one or more graphical elements of a graphical user interface, the gift registry to be populated with one or more starter registry options listing the product items or the services appropriate for the event and one or more product items or services from other gift registries of other registrants of the e-commerce company, wherein the other gift registries of the other registrants were made public via selections of graphical elements of other graphical user interfaces;

storing, in a first collection of data comprising information identifying product items or services and corresponding status information for each of the plurality of registrants, information identifying a product item or a service and corresponding status information, the product item or service having been selected by one registrant of the plurality of registrants;

displaying, via a graphical user interface, product item or service information for the one registrant from the first collection to a member of a social network corresponding to the one registrant, the social network comprising one or more individuals known to the one registrant;

granting, by the one registrant, full administrated privileges over the gift registry to any of the one or more individuals of the social network of the one registrant;

updating the corresponding status information for the displayed product item or service for the one registrant, responsive to an action by the member with respect to the product item or service;

automatically generating one or more messages communicating actions of any members of the social network of the one registrant with respect to the one or more of a product item or a service and corresponding status information for each product item or service, of the registrant, in the first collection; and

notifying at least one member of the social network of the one registrant other than the one registrant, of the updated status, by posting the system originated messages to an online activity feed viewable by the members of the social network of the one registrant.

The method according to claim 17 , wherein the gift registry is configured include a communication hub that provides supporting social interaction between the plurality of registrants, wherein the social interaction includes communication not related to the gift registry, wherein the one registrant and the one or more individuals known to the one registrant collaborate through the communication hub regarding gift items to select for the gift registry.

19. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the status information comprises one or both of an indication of a quantity and an indication of purchase of the corresponding product item or service for the one registrant.

20. The method according to claim 17 , wherein membership in the social network is controlled by the one registrant, or wherein notification is controlled by the one registrant.

21. The method according to claim 17 , comprising:

configuring the social media web application of the e-commerce company so that the registrant can designate one or more members of the corresponding social network to become co-registrants or collaborators that can create, modify, and manage the gift registry; and

configuring the social media web application of the e-commerce company to support communication related to the gift registry and communication not related to the gift registry between each registrant, the members of the corresponding social network, and the one or more event planners.

22. The method according to claim 17 , wherein member access to information in the first collection is controlled by the one registrant.

23. The method according to claim 17 , wherein an ability of a member to add a product item or a service to the first collection is controlled by the one registrant.

24. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the method comprises:

automatically sending one or more messages to one or both of the one registrant and members of the corresponding social network, wherein at least one date of sending and content of the one or more messages is determined based upon a type of social event and associated event date specified by the one registrant.

25. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the method comprises:

communicating, to the one registrant, when an out of stock condition has occurred for a product item identified for the one registrant in the first collection.

26. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the method comprises:

communicating, to the one registrant, when a product item identified for the one registrant is available from a vendor at a reduced cost.

27. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the method comprises:

enabling communication among the one registrant and members of the corresponding social network.

28. The method according to claim 27 , wherein the communication among the one registrant and members of the corresponding social network is merged to produce a feed viewable by one or both of the one registrant and the members of the social network.

29. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the method comprises:

responsive to the one registrant, populating the first collection for the one registrant with one or both of product items or services of a gift registry created by someone other than the one registrant.

30. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the method comprises:

prompting the one registrant to enable or disable one or more permissions regarding member access to the first collection and notifications; and

storing the one or more permissions for the one registrant.

31. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the action by the member with respect to the product item or service comprises purchasing the product item or service.

32. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the action by the member with respect to the product item or service comprises posting a comment about the product item or service.

33. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising one or more code sections, each code section having stored therein one or more instructions executable by a processor to cause the processor to perform a method of operating a gift registry for registering gift preferences of a plurality of registrants, the method comprising:

providing single sign on (SSO) authentication at a website of an e-commerce company;

sending an SSO token to an authentication service for SSO authentication, wherein the authentication service is in communication with the website of the e-commerce company and the web site of the gift registry;

in response to the SSO authentication, filtering the SSO token and sending the filtered SSO token to a website of the gift registry;

validating, via the web site of the gift registry and the authentication service, the filtered SSO token from the website of the e-commerce company;

providing a social media web application of the e-commerce company that supports social interaction between each registrant of a respective gift registry and the members of the corresponding social network of each registrant;

configuring, via a selection of one or more graphical elements of a graphical user interface, the social media web application of the e-commerce company to enable the registrant and one or more event planners designated by the registrant to plan an event relating to the gift registry via communication between the registrant, the members of the corresponding social network, and the one or more event planners;

configuring, via a selection of one or more graphical elements of a graphical user interface, the social media web application of the e-commerce company to enable the registrant to designate the one or more event planners who, via a graphical user interface of the social media web application of the e-commerce company, can send out invitations for the event, manage a guest list, send out reminders, and handle communication related to the event;

enabling, via a selection of one or more graphical elements of a graphical user interface, the gift registry to be populated with one or more starter registry options listing the product items or services appropriate for the event and one or more product items or services from other gift registries of other registrants of the e-commerce company, wherein the other gift registries of the other registrants were made public via selections of graphical elements of other graphical user interfaces;

storing, in a first collection of data, information identifying product items or services and corresponding status information for each of the plurality of registrants, information identifying one of a product item or a service and corresponding status information, the product item or service having been selected by one of the plurality of registrants;

displaying, via a graphical user interface, product item or service information for the one registrant from the first collection to a member of a social network corresponding to the one registrant, the social network comprising one or more individuals known to the one registrant;

granting, by the one registrant, full administrated privileges over the gift registry to any of the one or more individuals of the social network of the one registrant;

updating the corresponding status information for the displayed product item or service for the one registrant, responsive to an action by the member with respect to the product item or service;

automatically generating one or more system originated messages communicating actions of any members of the social network of the one registrant, with respect to the one or more of a product item or a service and corresponding status information for each product item or service, of the registrant, in the first collection; and

notifying at least one member of the social network of the one registrant other than the one registrant, of the updated status.

34. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the gift registry is configured include a communication hub that provides supporting social interaction between the plurality of registrants, wherein the social interaction includes communication not related to the gift registry, wherein the one registrant and the one or more individuals known to the one registrant collaborate through the communication hub regarding gift items to select for the gift registry.

35. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the status information comprises one or both of an indication of a quantity and an indication of purchase of the corresponding product item or service for the one registrant.

36. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein membership in the social network is controlled by the one registrant, or wherein notification is controlled by the one registrant.

37. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , comprising:

configuring the social media web application of the e-commerce company so that the registrant can designate one or more members of the corresponding social network to become co-registrants or collaborators that can create, modify, and manage the gift registry; and

configuring the social media web application of the e-commerce company to support communication related to the gift registry and communication not related to the gift registry between each registrant, the members of the corresponding social network, and the one or more event planners.

38. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein member access to information in the first collection is controlled by the one registrant.

39. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein an ability of a member to add a product item or a service to the first collection is controlled by the one registrant.

40. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the method comprises:

automatically sending one or more messages to one or both of the one registrant and members of the corresponding social network, wherein at least one date of sending and content of the one or more messages is determined based upon a type of social event and associated event date specified by the one registrant.

41. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the method comprises:

communicating, to the one registrant, when an out of stock condition has occurred for a product item identified for the one registrant in the first collection.

42. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the method comprises:

communicating, to the one registrant, when a product item identified for the one registrant is available from a vendor at a reduced cost.

43. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the method comprises:

enabling communication among the one registrant and members of the corresponding social network.

44. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 43 , wherein the communication among the one registrant and members of the corresponding social network is merged to produce a feed viewable by one or both of the one registrant and the members of the social network.

45. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the method comprises:

responsive to the one registrant, populating the first collection for the one registrant with one or both of product items or services of a gift registry created by someone other than the one registrant.

46. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the method comprises:

prompting the one registrant to enable or disable one or more permissions regarding member access to the first collection and notifications; and

storing the one or more permissions for the one registrant.

47. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the action by the member with respect to the product item or service comprises purchasing the product item or service.

48. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the action by the member with respect to the product item or service comprises posting a comment about the product item or service.

49. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operable to, at least:

receive a current location of the one registrant; and

send a notification to the one registrant via a mobile device of the one registrant, when the current location of the one registrant is in a store and near a product item identified in the first collection with regard to the one registrant.

50. The method according to claim 17 , wherein the method comprises:

receiving a current location of the one registrant; and

sending a notification to the one registrant via a mobile device of the one registrant, when the current location of the one registrant is in a store and near a product item identified in the first collection with regard to the one registrant.

51. The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 33 , wherein the method comprises:

receiving a current location of the one registrant; and

sending a notification to the one registrant via a mobile device of the one registrant, when the current location of the one registrant is in a store and near a product item identified in the first collection with regard to the one registrant.
