Abstract

An automated banking machine operates to cause financial transfers responsive to data read from data bearing records. The automated banking machine includes a card reader operative to read card data from user cards corresponding to financial accounts. The automated banking machine also includes a display and a printer to produce records of financial transactions carried out with the machine. The card reader is operative to read and return card information read from the user card responsive. The automated banking machine may also include a check acceptor that is usable to determine a probability associated with the check being fraudulent.

Claims (71)

1. Apparatus comprising:

an automated banking machine that operates responsive at least in part to data read from data bearing records to cause financial transfers, wherein the automated banking machine includes a plurality of hardware devices including:

a card reader operative to read card data from user cards, wherein the card data corresponds to financial accounts;

a check acceptor, wherein the check acceptor is configured to receive and scan financial checks that include thereon magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) symbols, wherein the check acceptor includes:

at least one magnetic sensor,

at least one transport,

wherein the at least one transport is operative to move a check adjacent to the at least one magnetic sensor,

wherein the at least one magnetic sensor is operative to generate electrical signals corresponding to the presence of magnetic indicia on the check;

at least one data store including a plurality of predetermined sets of values for MICR symbols of at least one MICR font;

at least one processor in operative communication with the card reader, the check acceptor, and the at least one data store, wherein the at least one processor is operative to cause:

a processor determination to be made that card data read from a card corresponds to a financial account concerning which financial transfers are authorized to be conducted through machine operation; and

a financial transfer at least one of to and from the financial account responsive at least in part to the determination;

wherein responsive at least in part to the electrical signals corresponding to the presence of magnetic indicia on the check, the at least one processor is operative to:

determine a first magnetic signal portion corresponding to a MICR symbol on the check;

identify a plurality of minimum and maximum peaks of the first magnetic signal portion, wherein a center of each peak corresponds to a peak amplitude of each peak, wherein opposed sides of each peak correspond to the portions of the first magnetic signal portion adjacent each side of the center of each peak;

determine the peak amplitude of each peak;

determine data representative of one of the sides of each peak responsive at least in part to a comparison between portions of the first magnetic signal portion corresponding to the opposed sides of each peak;

determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, and the data representative of one of the sides of each peak.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to:

determine a value of the first magnetic signal portion at a first predetermined distance on each side of each peak;

determine an anchor depth for each peak, which anchor depth corresponds to the smaller magnitude of the determined values for the sides of each respective peak;

determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, and the determined anchor depth of each peak.

The apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to determine for each of the plurality of peaks, a zone of consecutive waveform samples of the first magnetic signal portion, wherein the at least one processor is operative to determine the values of the first magnetic signal portion on each side of each peak at a distance hw from the center of each peak, where the distance hw represents a number of waveform samples, where the distance hw corresponding to the first predetermined distance.

4. The apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein each zone includes 2*hw+1 consecutive waveform samples for each peak.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein hw=5.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the zone samples correspond to portions of the first magnetic signal portion that are all equally spaced apart.

7. The apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to:

determine respective areas of each side of each respective peak;

determine a weight of each peak, wherein the weight of each peak corresponds to two times the smaller one of the determined areas of the sides of each peak; and

determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, the determined anchor depth of each peak, and the determined weight of each peak.

8. The apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to:

determine a cut series for each peak, wherein the cut series for each peak corresponds to the difference between an area of the determined zone and a product of the average of the determined values for the sides of the respective peak and a length of the determined zone of the respective peak; and

determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, the determined anchor depth of each peak, the determined weight of each peak, and the determined cute series of each peak.

9. The apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to:

determine a cut series for each peak, wherein the cut series for each peak corresponds to the difference between an area of the determined zone and a product of the average of the determined values for the sides of the respective peak and a length of the determined zone of the respective peak; and

determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, the determined anchor depth of each peak, and the determined cute series of each peak.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to determine the presence of a peaks in eight equally spaced apart locations across the first magnetic signal portion.

11. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one MICR font includes a E-13B font.

The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to carry out a Pearson correlation to determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, and the data representative of one of the sides of each peak.

13. Apparatus comprising:

a check acceptor operative for use in an automated banking machine that operates responsive at least in part to data read from data bearing records to cause financial transfers, wherein the automated banking machine includes a plurality of hardware devices including:

a card reader operative to read card data from user cards, wherein the card data corresponds to financial accounts;

wherein the check acceptor is configured to receive and scan financial checks that include thereon magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) symbols, wherein the check acceptor includes:

at least one magnetic sensor,

at least one transport,

wherein the at least one transport is operative to move a check adjacent to the at least one magnetic sensor,

wherein the at least one magnetic sensor is operative to generate electrical signals corresponding to the presence of magnetic indicia on the check;

at least one data store including a plurality of predetermined sets of values for MICR symbols of at least one MICR font;

at least one processor in operative communication with the at least one data store, the at least one transport and the at least one magnetic sensor;

wherein responsive at least in part to the electrical signals corresponding to the presence of magnetic indicia on the check, the at least one processor is operative to:

determine a first magnetic signal portion corresponding to a MICR symbol on the check;

identify a plurality of minimum and maximum peaks of the first magnetic signal portion, wherein a center of each peak corresponds to a peak amplitude of each peak, wherein opposed sides of each peak correspond to the portions of the first magnetic signal portion adjacent each side of the center of each peak;

determine the peak amplitude of each peak;

determine data representative of one of the sides of each peak responsive at least in part to a comparison between portions of the first magnetic signal portion corresponding to the opposed sides of each peak;

determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, and the data representative of one of the sides of each peak.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to:

determine the amplitude of each peak;

determine a value of the first magnetic signal portion at a first predetermined distance on each side of each peak;

determine an anchor depth for each peak, which anchor depth corresponds to the smaller magnitude of the determined values for the sides of each respective peak;

determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, and the determined anchor depth of each peak.

The apparatus according to claim 14 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to determine for each of the plurality of peaks, a zone of consecutive waveform samples of the first magnetic signal portion, wherein the at least one processor is operative to determine the values of the first magnetic signal portion on each side of each peak at a distance hw from the center of each peak, where the distance hw represents a number of waveform samples, where the distance hw corresponding to the first predetermined distance.

16. The apparatus according to claim 15 , wherein each zone includes 2*hw+1 consecutive waveform samples for each peak.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16 , wherein hw=5.

18. The apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein the zone samples correspond to portions of the first magnetic signal portion that are all equally spaced apart.

19. The apparatus according to claim 15 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to:

determine respective areas of each side of each respective peak;

determine a weight of each peak, wherein the weight of each peak corresponds to two times the smaller one of the determined areas of the sides of each peak; and

determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, the determined anchor depth of each peak, and the determined weight of each peak.

20. The apparatus according to claim 19 , wherein the at least one processor is operative to:

determine a cut series for each peak, wherein the cut series for each peak corresponds to the difference between an area of the determined zone and a product of the average of the determined values for the sides of the respective peak and a length of the determined zone of the respective peak; and

determine which MICR symbol of the at least one MICR font corresponds to the first magnetic signal portion responsive at least in part to the sets of values included in the at least one data store, the determined peak amplitude of each peak, the determined anchor depth of each peak, the determined weight of each peak, and the determined cute series of each peak.
