Abstract

A base station for use in a wireless communications system is disclosed, including transceiver circuitry for transmitting and receiving with at least one mobile device over at least one communications channel. Polarization control logic is included for controlling a polarization of signals transmitted over the at least one communications channel. The polarization control logic adjusts a polarization of the signal transmitted on the at least one communications channel responsive to at least one parameter received from the mobile device relating to a quality of signal received on the at least one communications channel.

Claims (43)

1. A base station for use in a wireless communications system, comprising:

transceiver circuitry for transmitting and receiving with at least one mobile device over at least one communications channel;

polarization control logic for controlling a polarization of signals transmitted over the at least one communications channel;

wherein the polarization control logic selectively adjusts a polarization of the signal transmitted on the at least one communications channel in a first direction or a second direction to minimize at least one parameter received from the mobile device relating to a quality of signal received on the at least one communications channel and;

wherein the polarization control logic makes a first selective adjustment to the polarization of the signal in the first direction and obtains a new value of the at least one parameter after the first adjustment.

2. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the at least one signal comprises a received error rate at the at least one mobile device.

3. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the polarization control logic makes a second adjustment to the polarization of the signal in the first direction or the second direction responsive to the new value of the at least one parameter.

4. The base station of claim 3 , wherein the second adjustment changes the polarization of the signal in an opposite direction from the first adjustment of the polarization of the signal.

5. The base station of claim 3 , wherein the second adjustment increases the polarization of the signal from the first adjustment of the polarization of the signal.

6. A method for improving a quality of service parameter between a base station and a mobile device, comprising the steps of:

determining a first polarization based upon a previously used polarization of the base station on a previous call;

transmitting a signal at the first polarization from the base station to the mobile device;

receiving the quality of service parameter associated with a signal on a communications channel between the base station and the mobile device at the base station from the mobile device;

adjusting the signal on the communications channel to a second polarization to drive a quality of service parameter to a minimum value responsive to the quality of service parameter; and

transmitting the signal at the second polarization from the base station to the mobile device.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of receiving further comprises receiving a signal error associated with the signal on the communications channel.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of adjusting further comprises the step of increasing the polarization of the signal.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of adjusting further comprises the step of decreasing the polarization of the signal.

10. The method of claim 6 further including the steps of:

monitoring the signal received at the mobile device on the communications channel;

determining the quality of service parameter associated with the signal received on the communications channel; and

transmitting the quality of service parameter to the base station from the mobile device.

11. A base station for use in a wireless communications system, comprising:

transceiver circuitry for transmitting and receiving with at least one mobile device over at least one communications channel;

polarization control logic for controlling a polarization of signals transmitted over the at least one communications channel; and

wherein the polarization control logic adjusts a polarization of the signal transmitted on the at least one communications channel in a first direction responsive to at least one parameter received from the mobile device relating to a quality of signal received on the at least one communications channel changing in a first direction, obtains a new value of the at least one parameter after the first adjustment, and adjusts the polarization of the signal transmitted on the at least one communications channel in a second direction responsive to the at least one parameter received from the mobile device relating to the quality of signal received on the at least one communications channel changing in a second direction.

12. The base station of claim 11 , wherein the at least one signal comprises a received error rate at the at least one mobile device.

13. The base station of claim 11 , wherein the polarization control logic makes a second adjustment to the polarization of the signal responsive to the new value of the at least one parameter.

14. The base station of claim 13 , wherein the second adjustment changes the polarization of the signal in an opposite direction from the first adjustment.

15. The base station of claim 13 , wherein the second adjustment increases the polarization of the signal from the first adjustment.

16. A method for improving a quality of service parameter between a base station and a mobile device, comprising the steps of:

determining a first polarization based upon a previously used polarization of the base station on a previous call;

transmitting a signal at the first polarization from the base station to the mobile device;

determining the quality of service parameter associated with the signal transmitted on a communications channel at the first polarization between the base station and the mobile device at the base station from the mobile device;

adjusting the signal on the communications channel to a second polarization responsive to quality of service parameter, wherein the second polarization is adjusted in a first direction responsive to the quality of service parameter at a first value and is adjusted in a second direction responsive to the quality of service parameter at a second value;
