Abstract

A system for product advertising through a telecommunication network is disclosed. The system comprises an advertising engine and an information depot. The advertising engine comprises an information-extraction tool for acquiring product information, an authoring tool for tracking product images appearing in a display of a video recording, and an augmented-display tool for relating product images appearing in a display of a video recording to respective product information. The information depot comprises a global product directory and overlay directories for a set of video recordings. A number of authoring computers connect to the advertising engine of the present invention as well as streaming video sources and advertising databases to generate content of the information depot. The advertising engine distributes the augmented-display tool to viewers' computers which accesses the video-content directory and the product directory to acquire respective overlay directories and associated product data.

Claims (18)

1 . An overlay server comprising a processor and a memory device storing processor-executable instructions, said overlay server configured to:

distribute authoring software to a plurality of authoring computers;

distribute viewing software to a plurality of viewing computers;

receive overlays of a set of video signals from said authoring computers;

append said overlays to a video-content directory;

receive a request from a viewing computer; and

send a video signal and a respective overlay to said viewing computer.

2 . The overlay server of claim 1 further comprising a plurality of transcoders, each transcoder configured to encode data of a respective first format to a respective second format.

3 . The overlay server of claim 1 wherein each said overlay contains:

a video-signal identifier;

a set of identifiers of objects tracked in a display of a respective video signal; and

coordinates of tracked images of each tracked object.

4 . The overlay server of claim 1 wherein at least one overlay is structured in multiple layers providing different levels of details.

5 . The overlay server of claim 1 wherein at least one overlay is structured to enable an interactive viewing session where optional information may be provided according to a viewer's instructions.

6 . The overlay server of claim 1 wherein said authoring software causes said processor to select objects of a displayed video signal and wherein a process of selecting an object triggers a respective software program which invokes interactive communication with a user.

7 . The overlay server of claim 1 wherein said authoring software track objects of a displayed video signal based on time indicators of respective authoring computers.

8 . The overlay server of claim 1 wherein said authoring software track objects of a displayed video signal based on sequential numbers of frames of a displayed video signal.

9 . The overlay server of claim 1 wherein at least one overlay is structured to be compatible with a television receiver operated according to the Internet Protocol.
