Abstract

Systems and methods for generating and displaying application information on a wireless station. A wireless station is configured to select icons for display on a wireless station based on a network information string received by the wireless station.

Claims (27)

1. A method for displaying application information on a wireless station comprising:

receiving, by the wireless station, a beacon message transmitted by an access point, wherein the beacon message comprises a network information string identifying the access point;

obtaining, by the wireless station, the network information string from the beacon message;

searching, by the wireless station, a datastore storing one or more application icons in one or more records based on the network information string, wherein a record stores an application icon in association with the network information string without regard to a registration ownership of the network information string; and

displaying, by the wireless station, at least one of the one or more application icons in response to identifying the at least one of the one or more application icons associated with the network information string of the access point.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network information string comprises at least a portion of a network name identifier broadcast by a string broadcast station.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the network name identifier is a service set identifier (SSID).

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the network information string comprises at least a portion of a MAC address broadcast by the access point.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wireless station is selected from the group consisting of a smartphone, a tablet, a laptop computer, a Wi-Fi enabled device, a Bluetooth enabled device, and a Zigbee enabled device.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein the wireless station and the string broadcast station communicate over a wireless network selected from the group consisting of a Wi-Fi network, an RFID network, a Zigbee network, a Bluetooth network and a 3G/4G cellular network.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the application icon comprises a shortcut to an application stored on the wireless station.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the application icon comprises a link to an application that does not reside on the wireless station.

9. A wireless station comprising:

a display;

a receiver device configured to receive a beacon message transmitted by an access point, wherein the beacon message comprises a network information string identifying the access point;

a datastore comprising a non-transitory memory storing one or more application icons in one or more records, wherein each respective record stores an application icon associated with one or more network information strings without regard to a registration ownership of each network information string; and

a processor configured to perform:

obtaining the network information string from the beacon message;

determining whether the network information string is associated in the datastore with an application icon; and

displaying the application icon on the display in response to identifying an application icon associated with the network information string.

10. The wireless station of claim 9 , wherein the network information string comprises at least a portion of a network name identifier broadcast by a string broadcast station.

11. The wireless station of claim 10 , wherein the network name identifier is a service set identifier (SSID).

12. The wireless station of claim 9 , wherein the network information string comprises at least a portion of a MAC address broadcast by the access point.

13. The wireless station of claim 9 , wherein the wireless station is selected from the group consisting of a smartphone, a tablet, a laptop computer, a Wi-Fi enabled device, a Bluetooth enabled device, and a Zigbee enabled device.

14. The wireless station of claim 10 further comprising a wireless network and wherein the wireless station and the string broadcast station communicate over the wireless network selected from the group consisting of a Wi-Fi network, an RFID network, a Zigbee network, a Bluetooth network and a 3G/4G cellular network.

15. The wireless station of claim 9 , wherein the application icon comprises a shortcut to an application stored on the wireless station.

16. The wireless station of claim 9 , wherein the application icon comprises a link to an application that does not reside on the wireless station.
