Abstract

Various arrangements for television channel tuning are presented. Receiving equipment may receive an indication of a first television channel for tuning. The receiving equipment may determine the first television channel is not available. A second television channel that carries the same content as the first television channel may be identified. The second television channel may be available for tuning. The receiving equipment may tune to the second television channel.

Claims (59)

1. A method for television channel tuning, the method comprising:

receiving, by receiving equipment, an indication of a first television channel for tuning, wherein the first television channel is associated with a first transponder;

determining, by the receiving equipment, based on an inadequate downlink signal being received for the first television channel, that the first television channel is not available;

identifying, using a lookup table stored by the receiving equipment, a second television channel associated with a second transponder that is currently carrying the same content as the first television channel and is available for tuning, wherein:

the lookup table is periodically updated to indicate matching content on a plurality of television channels broadcast to the receiving equipment via different transponders; and

the lookup table indicates the first television channel and the second television channel have matching content;

tuning, by the receiving equipment, to the second television channel associated with the second transponder;

identifying, by the receiving equipment, a plurality of unavailable television channels due to the plurality of unavailable television channels also being associated with the first transponder; and

outputting, by the receiving equipment, an electronic programming guide that indicates the plurality of unavailable television channels and the first television channel are unavailable, the electronic programming guide further presenting in relation to each television channel of the plurality of unavailable television channels, an indication of a corresponding available standard-definition television channel.

2. The method for television channel tuning of claim 1 , wherein each television channel of the plurality of television channels in the lookup table is assigned a content identifier that identifies another television channel of a different transponder that carries the same video and audio content at the same time.

3. The method for television channel tuning of claim 2 , further comprising:

updating, by the receiving equipment, the lookup table using data receivable via a satellite transmission.

4. The method for television channel tuning of claim 2 , further comprising:

receiving, by the receiving equipment, from a computer system, via the Internet, an indication of one or more television channels currently unavailable via satellite, wherein:

receiving the indication does not occur via a satellite dish communicatively coupled with the receiving equipment.

5. The method for television channel tuning of claim 1 , wherein tuning, by the receiving equipment, to the second television channel occurs without requiring input from a user.

6. The method for television channel tuning of claim 1 , wherein the first television channel and the second television channel are in different display formats.

7. The method for television channel tuning of claim 6 , wherein:

the first television channel is a high-definition television channel; and

the second television channel is a standard-definition television channel.

8. The method for television channel tuning of claim 7 , wherein the first television channel is transmitted from a different location than the second television channel.

9. The method for television channel tuning of claim 7 , wherein the first television channel is received from the first transponder of a television satellite and the second television channel is received-from the second transponder of the television satellite.

10. The method for television channel tuning of claim 6 , wherein determining the first television channel is not available for tuning comprises determining that a sufficient signal cannot be received from a television satellite.

11. The method for television channel tuning of claim 1 , further comprising:

following tuning to the second television channel, monitoring, by the receiving equipment, the first television channel to determine if the first television channel has become available.

12. A system for television channel tuning, the system comprising:

a communication interface configured to receive television signals from a plurality of transponders of a plurality of satellites;

a processor; and

a memory communicatively coupled with and readable by the processor and having stored therein processor-readable instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

receive an indication of a first television channel for tuning, wherein the first television channel is associated with a first transponder;

determine the first television channel is not available;

identify, using a lookup table stored by the memory, a second television channel associated with a second transponder that is currently carrying the same content as the first television channel and is available for tuning, wherein:

the lookup table is periodically updated to indicate matching content on a plurality of television channels broadcast to the receiving equipment via different transponders; and

the lookup table indicates the first television channel and the second television channel have matching content;

tune to the second television channel; and

identify a plurality of unavailable television channels due to the plurality of unavailable television channels also being associated with the first transponder; and

output an electronic programming guide that indicates the plurality of unavailable television channels and the first television channel are unavailable.

13. The system for television channel tuning of claim 12 , further comprising a digital video recorder (DVR) and the indication of the first channel for tuning is received from the digital video recorder.

14. The system for television channel tuning of claim 12 , wherein each television channel of the plurality of television channels in the lookup table is assigned a content identifier that identifies a different transponder that carries the same video and audio content at a same time on another television channel.

15. The system for television channel tuning of claim 14 , wherein the first television channel and the second television channel are in different display formats.

16. The system for television channel tuning of claim 15 , wherein:

the first television channel is a high-definition television channel; and

the second television channel is a standard-definition television channel.

17. The system for television channel tuning of claim 16 , wherein the first television channel is transmitted from a different television satellite than the second television channel.

18. The system for television channel tuning of claim 16 , wherein the first television channel is received from the first transponder of a television satellite and the second television channel is received from the second transponder of the television satellite.

19. A computer program product residing on a non-transitory processor-readable medium for television channel tuning, the computer program product comprising processor-readable instructions configured to cause a processor to:

receive an indication of a first television channel for tuning, wherein the first television channel is associated with a first transponder;

determine the first television channel is not available;

perform a lookup in a locally-stored service information database of the first television channel, wherein:

the locally-stored service information database is periodically updated to indicate matching content on a plurality of television channels;

the locally-stored service information database indicates a satellite and a transponder for the plurality of television channels;

each television channel of the plurality of television channels in the locally-stored service information database is assigned a content identifier that identifies a different transponder that carries the same content at a same time on another television channel; and

the service information database is maintained separate from an electronic programming guide;

determine the content identifier linked with the first television channel;

determine a second television channel linked with the same content identifier as the first television channel wherein

the second television channel is associated with a second transponder; and

tune to the second television channel;

identify a plurality of unavailable television channels due to the plurality of unavailable television channels also being associated with the first transponder; and

outputting, by the receiving equipment, an electronic programming guide that indicates the plurality of unavailable television channels and the first television channel are unavailable.
